Tech businessman Jared Isaacman, who made a fortune in tech and fighter jets, bought an entire flight and took three “everyday” people with him to space. He aimed to use the private trip to raise $200 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, half coming from his own pocket.
His crew included a St. Jude worker with direct ties to the activity, representing the activity’s pillar (核心) of Hope, a professor, and another person, representing the pillar of Generosity, chosen as part of a $200 million St. Jude fundraising program. All were invited to join in donating to reach the ambitious overall campaign goal in support of St. Jude’s current multi-billion dollar expansion to speed up research advances and save more children worldwide. Anyone donating to St. Jude would be entered into a random drawing for the “Generosity” seat.
Isaacman has been “really interested in space” since he was in kindergarten. He dropped out of high school when he was 16, got a GED certificate and started a business in his parents’ basement that became the beginning of Shift4 Payments, a credit card processing company. He set a speed record flying around the world in 2009 while raising money for the Make-A-Wish program, and later established Draken International, the world’s largest private fleet (舰队) of fighter jets.
Now he has realized his childhood dream-boarding a spaceship, launched in Florida and orbiting the Earth for three days in the history-making event. He called it an “epic (史诗般的) adventure”. “I truly want us to live in a world 50 or 100 years from now where people are jumping their rockets,” Isaacman said. “And if we’re going to live in that world, we’d better deal with childhood cancer successfully along the way.”
4. Why did Isaacman raise funds for St. Jude
A. To expand a fundraising programme. B. To perform an act of great generosity.
C. To make his childhood dream come true. D. To encourage St. Jude’s life-saving work.
5. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 3
A. The commercial skills of Isaacman. B. The growth experience of Isaacman.
C. The reason for Isaacman’s good deeds. D. The beginning of Isaacman’s business.
6. What can be learned about the “epic adventure”
A. It was a multi-day journey. B. It will be common in the future.
C. It involved three civilians in total. D. It is a symbol of hope for a better life.
7. What message is conveyed in Isaacman’s story
A. No sweet without sweat. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. D. A penny saved is a penny earned.
C
We may not always notice that we frequently imitate each other in conversation, using similar gestures, accents, and facial expressions. We also often reuse the words of the people we speak with.
Over time, this form of engagement, known as resonance (共鸣), has increased mostly among people in higher social grades, including people in leading managerial positions in the corporate world, doctors, university lecturers and politicians, according to a study led by Dr Vittorio Tantucci, a Senior Lecturer in Linguistics at Lancaster University.
It showed that over a 20-year period people from these sectors changed their behaviour — resonating with one another significantly more than they used to and moving towards a more engaging style. We talk like others to be more inclusive and resonate with them.
This might, suggest the researchers, be due to the dramatic change in corporate communication and higher education in the 2000s, involving an institutional turn towards corporate social responsibility (CSR), and ideologies (意识形态) such as Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).
“This affected not only the system of values of those communities but also their interactional behaviour, now increasingly moving towards open acknowledgement of other people’ s talk,” said Dr Tantucci. “This increase is not found in workplaces where these ideologies are not routinely encouraged.”
“When words and expressions are creatively reused in conversation, speakers are more engaged with each other’s speech, showing a more inclusive attitude towards what has just been said by the other party,” explains Dr Tantucci. “They make the other person’s speech sound more important.”
This phenomenon — resonance — has become more obvious across higher social grades of British Society than in lower ones. This shows a significant change in how British people interact with one another and how this is reflected in different social classes.
8. What does the term “resonance” refer to in the text
A. The physical act of sound.
B. The psychological phenomenon of sympathy.
C. The corporate strategy of adapting to market trends.
D. The behavioral pattern of imitating others in conversation.
9. Which group has shown the most significant increase in resonance
A. High school students. B. Amateur athletes.
C. Leaders of companies. D. Shopping assistants.
10. What might be the reason behind the increase in resonance
A. The rise of social media. B. The influence of popular culture.
C. Advances in communication technology. D. The shift towards CSR and ideologies like EDI.
11 How does a communicator feel in a resonant conversation
A. Respected. B. Offended. C. Nervous. D. Uncomfortable.
D
People may typically think of memory as the recollection of the past. Memory enables people to learn from past experiences and apply that knowledge in present circumstances. It is a vital part of our identity. So is culture, the way of life specific to a group of people.
Cultural memory is the constructed understanding of the past that is passed from one generation to the next through text, oral traditions, monuments and other symbols. Cultural memory is often amassed in objects, such as museums or historical monuments. To understand culture, humans access a mass of cultural symbols, such as books. Artifacts (历史文物) of the past provide insights into where we came from. Libraries and the Internet keep a seemingly boundless amount of data on what it means to be part of a culture. Cultural memory is the longest-lasting form of memory.
Like all forms of memory, cultural memory has important functions. For example, it makes the experiences a nation owns clear. It provides us with an understanding of the past and the values of the group to which we belong. Besides, it creates a form of shared identity and a means for communicating this identity to new members. The most powerful forms of cultural memory may involve memories of past disastrous experiences undergone (经历) by groups of victims. For example, in Russia, their role in World War II— in which tens of millions of Russians were killed — is still an important part of modern Russian identity. Because all groups have cultural memory, it can bring about a spirit of resistance or survival among threatened groups.
The main function of cultural memory is not to recall the past, whether it is good or bad. Rather, it is to use knowledge of past experiences to avoid making the same mistakes again and again. Aleida Assmann, a professor who has worked on memory theory since the 1960s, calls this “remembering forward”. Cultural memory enables people to adapt to their culture; it enables cultures to adapt to new circumstances by keeping traces (痕迹) of what worked in the past.
12. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. Reporting a discovery of cultural memory.
B. Leading to the concept of cultural memory.
C. Introducing the importance of memory in identity.
D. Making a connection between memory and culture.
13. Which can replace the underlined word “amassed” in paragraph 2
A. Stored. B. Overlooked. C. Evaluated. D. Created.
14. Russia is mentioned in paragraph 3 to indicate ______.
A. the features of cultural memory
B. the formation of cultural memory
C. the role of big events in Russian identity
D. the impact of cultural memory on identity
15. What is cultural memory mainly expected to do
A. Pass previous wisdom down.
B. Keep traces of history.
C. Get people to know about the past.
D. Remind people of their identity.

Two years ago, homeless Minnie was adopted by a single rich woman. Life did get a bit easier ever since she was taken in by her foster mom, but the little girl was still not happy. How she wished she could have a father!
One morning in class, Minnie’s teacher, Mr Thompson, made a surprising announcement, making Minnie frown (皱眉) again.
“Kids, tomorrow is Father’s Day! And at school, we’re all celebrating it by having breakfast with Dads! All of you get to bring your dads or anyone you look up to as your dad to school tomorrow. We’ll all sit in one circle, share funny stories, and have breakfast together.”
“What a terrible idea!” Minnie muttered (咕哝) under her breath.
For the rest of the day, most kids were talking up their fathers: businessmen, policemen, engineers, and even an actor. Everybody had somebody who was a father figure, except for Minnie.
After school, Mr Thompson spotted the sad little girl sitting alone by the school gate.
“Are you all right, Minnie ” Mr Thompson asked. Suddenly, the child hugged his legs and cried. Minnie told her trouble to her teacher and Mr Thompson comforted her.
After getting home that evening, Mr Thompson couldn’t shake off the sadness he had seen on Minnie’s face. Suddenly, he had an idea. He opened his laptop, and as the keys on the keyboard clattered, Mr Thompson began to smile.
He was putting out a post on social media, sharing Minnie’s story and asking for a dad to volunteer for Minnie and show up to school the next day as her father figure. Thirty minutes later, his phone buzzed.
And it buzzed again and again. By the time the teacher checked his phone, he was shocked to see the number flashing across the screen.
“50 volunteers Am I reading this right ” Mr Thompson gasped. He put on his glasses and read through all the responses on his post. He was so surprised. These 50 volunteers all wanted to come and help Minnie.

13. Which can replace the underlined word “amassed” in paragraph 2
A. Stored. B. Overlooked. C. Evaluated. D. Created.
14. Russia is mentioned in paragraph 3 to indicate ______.

C. the role of big events in Russian identity
D. the impact of cultural memory on identity
15. What is cultural memory mainly expected to do

【答案】参考范文:
The next day, Minnie went to school sadly, not knowing the surprise was waiting for her. She walked along the hallways with her eyes glued to the floor, failing to notice the line of adult men outside her class door. Mr Thompson said her name last after the other kids had introduced their dads to the class. Just as Minnie was about to say that she had no one, Mr Thompson held her shoulders and said, “Minnie, I know you wanted to bring a father figure, and you thought there wasn’t one. You are right about that, my dear. There isn’t one father figure who has shown up for you; there are 50!”
Minnie was confused at first, but when she saw those “dads”, she was obviously happy. “You’ve really come for me ” she clapped in excitement. “Certainly, Minnie! Mr Thompson told us all about you, and we wouldn’t miss it for the world!” one of the men said gently. The volunteers joined the other dads and kids for the day, taking part in every game. They had a happy and memorable day. After a thoroughly entertaining day, Minnie was thankful to those kind “dads” and they all promised that they would come to meet Minnie whenever she needed them.
