The air smells of fresh earth and sweat, filled with the sounds of over 30 children training. “This art dates back to the Qing Dynasty,” Bai Hejiang begins, his voice thick with pride. “My grandfather was a bodyguard and wrestling coach and my father and uncles were all wrestlers. Can you imagine Carrying this legacy for six generations...”
Born into a wrestling family, Bai started practicing basic skills with his family from the age of 4. His excellent wrestling skills later got him into Hebei’s professional wrestling team. After retiring, he returned to his hometown to do business but could never let go of his dream to promote and pass down Chinese-style wrestling. Bai found Baoding, once a birthplace of Chinese wrestling, had no schools teaching its iconic type of wrestling. So Bai decided to open a wrestling school. He transformed his neglected factory into a training gym — a 4,000-square-meter outdoor training ground and a 300-square-meter indoor training facility.
Since the school was established in 2013, it has been providing completely voluntary teaching without charging a penny. “The program accepts students regardless of ethnicity, gender, age or region, and anyone willing to learn can sign up,” Bai says. Eighteen-year-old Guo Yuhang, from a nearby village, has been training for nine years. “Guo was a 70-kilogram couch potato when he started,” Bai chuckles. Today, he has gained a future. Of course, he has already lost weight and become well-built, muscular. According to Guo, he has applied to Shandong Sport University for the Chinese-style wrestling major. “I want to be a physical education teacher in the future and teach Chinese-style wrestling like my master,” Guo says.
Over the past decade, Bai’s school has not only kept Baoding Fast Wrestling alive but also nurtured many young enthusiasts like Guo. From reviving the fading wrestling style to guiding youngsters toward their goals, Bai keeps moving forward, letting every drop of sweat and every shared skill tell the story of how he chases what his heart has long been tied to.
4. What made Bai begin practising wrestling
A. His family’s influence. B. His father’s expectation.
C. His coach’s encouragement. D. His grandfather’s requirement.
5. Which of the following can best describe Bai’s wrestling school
A. Well-equipped and spacious. B. Inclusive and neat.
C. Influential and charitable. D. Professional and selective.
6. What is the most significant change in Guo after nine years’ training
A. He has had a well-defined aim. B. He has become a couch potato.
C. He has become a handsome boy. D. He has developed an interest in learning.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Aiming for a New Career B. Fighting for His Calling
C. Striving for National Glory D. Struggling for His Family

On April 20th, more than 57,000 local citizens and 20 local organizations joined an island-wide protest in the Canary Islands to demand attention to the issue of mass tourism.
The Canary Islands is located in the Atlantic Ocean and off the coast of northwest Africa. Tourism accounts for as much as 35% of the island’s regional GDP, making it the third-most attractive tourist location in Spain.
Normally, tourism is an integral part of many nations’ economies and helps boost economic growth. However, in recent years, the rapid growth of the tourism industry in the Canary Islands has put huge stress on local residents. For a local population of only 2.2 million people, the Canary Islands had a record-breaking 13.9 million tourists in 2023, growing 13% compared to the previous year. Over-tourism has led to many issues. As a result, the people of the Canary Islands have taken to the streets to spread awareness of this pressing concern.
As tourism becomes the region’s main economic model, much of the Canary Islands’ services and buildings have been dedicated to accommodating tourists. This has led to an unexpected growth in the prices of the rental market, raising property costs, taxes, and homelessness rates. The demand from tourists has also increased privatization in the Canary Islands, diminishing available public housing and employee wages. As such, these lower wages cannot cover the basic living expenses for many residents, causing poverty rates. The emphasis on tourism has also led to environmental degradation in the Canary Islands as winters become drier and water resources diminish.
The growing discontent among locals has been building for years. Calls for change have grown louder, with residents voicing their frustration over policies that prioritize tourists over local well-being. With the issues troubling the Canary Islands, more and more local protesters have called attention to several solutions that could resolve the ongoing over-tourism problem.
8. What can we learn about the Canary Islands
A. It is very inviting. B. Its locals like traveling.
C. It is an African country. D. Its economy is highly developed.
9. Why is the rental price higher in the Canary Islands
A. Because the government has increased taxes.
B. Because the local population has grown rapidly.
C. Because most facilities are used to serve tourists.
D. Because the locals make a living by renting out properties.
10. What does the underlined word “diminishing” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Damaging. B. Upgrading. C. Improving. D. Decreasing.
11. What will the author probably talk about next
A. Current policies. B. Existing changes.
C. Proposed solutions. D. Over-tourism problems.
D
Corals are crucial to marine biodiversity and support a quarter of all marine creatures. Humans depend on corals for food and protection from strong waves and storm surges. However, corals are also very fragile: pollution, ocean acidification, and physical destruction by fishing, all pose threats to corals. But global warming is one of the largest challenges they face, causing coral bleaching (珊瑚白化).
A recent study examined the impact of the 2023 heatwave on Caribbean coral and found that most young corals bred (培育) using in-vitro fertilization (IVF) remained healthy. These corals were bred in the lab and then planted in wild reefs, and while 75% of old corals had bleached or paled, 90% of young coral survived.
Usually, coral restoration techniques involve breaking corals into smaller pieces and transplanting them to other areas. While these transplanted corals are clones, IVF corals increase genetic diversity as they produce new baby corals. The different genes might allow corals to adapt by giving natural selection new characteristics to act on. Scientists are not sure of the explanation for the difference in survival rates. However, research suggests that they too will become less tolerant as they age.
Meanwhile, Australian scientists under Annika Lamb at AIMS are breeding more heat-tolerant corals. They mix and match to create different combinations of corals. This process is known as selective breeding. By using selective breeding, Lamb and her team are trying to speed up the process of natural selection to match the pace of changing temperatures.
Once global warming hits the 1.5℃ threshold, corals are not expected to survive. These effects can already be seen with the intervals (间隔) between bleaching periods becoming shorter.
While these two studies give us new hope for corals, they are not the fix-all solution. “These super corals can help corals survive and adapt, they are an intermediate solution. The real fight remains in addressing the root cause: global warming and climate change,” reasons principal researcher Madeleine van Oppen at AIMS.
12. What advantage do IVF corals have over transplanted cloned corals
A. IVF corals develop more rapidly in wild reefs.
B. IVF corals are more resistant to physical destruction.
C. IVF corals will become more tolerant as they get older.
D. IVF corals show greater differences in their genetic makeup.
13. Why do Australian scientists conduct selective breeding on corals
A. To study the natural selection of corals.
B. To combine different kinds of coral species.
C. To shorten the intervals between bleaching periods.
D. To develop corals adapting faster to temperature shifts.
14. What is Madeleine van Oppen’s view on “super corals”
A. They can replace natural corals.
B. They require further improvement.
C. They will put an end to coral bleaching.
D. They fail to resolve the problem thoroughly.
15. What does the text mainly talk about
A. New efforts to save coral reefs. B. A promising future for coral reefs.
C. Scientific ways of breeding corals. D. Major threats facing coral reefs.

How to Help your Brain Form Healthy Habits and Break the Bad Ones
Many people set New Year’s goals, like learning guitar or quitting nail-biting. ___16___ However, such changes are entirely achievable thanks to the brain’s plasticity (可塑性) and consistent practice.
Set your goals wisely. When you set a goal, try to make it motivating. There is solid evidence that people are better at sticking to activities that they want to do than to activities that they have to do. ___17___ Instead, give yourself a mix of goals, including some easy wins, to help boost motivation.
___18___ Attention and focus improve if the goal includes certain details. For example, “I want to clean my room every Saturday.” is much better than “I want to be organized.” This will keep your attention focused on what you’re trying to accomplish.
Choose a helpful environment and provide context clues. To form new habits, repetition and your environment matter. Use visual signals and reminders to start actions. ___19___ Equally important, avoid a conflicting environment like not going to a candy store if your goal is to stop eating candy. These approaches help the brain learn new routines and make choices that match their goals.
Reward yourself. Providing a reward, even if it’s just a small treat, can help things stick. The brain loves these rewards. They signal“do that again.” Receiving feedback is another form of reward and improves performance. Feedback can come from others or yourself and it can be as simple as crossing goals off a to-do list. ___20___
A. Be specific with your goals.
B. Pay attention to the key details.
C. It helps you see you’re doing well.
D. It will help you develop a healthy habit.
E. And these could be notes or daily alarms.
F. Don’t set challenges with a very high failure rate.
G. Forming new habits and breaking old ones can be difficult.

The plane’s wheels touched down in Beijing. I’d come as an exchange student not just to study, but also to really touch a new culture and find out how two different worlds might fit together.
That hope felt closer a week later, when my host school announced “Taste of the Globe” — share a dish from your own country. I instantly thought of shepherd’s pie, a classic British dish. I’d made it with Dad a hundred times, and he’d even let me pack a small jar of his homemade tomato jam — our little family trick to cut through the meat’s richness. “Don’t mess with the recipe (食谱),”he’d joked before I left.
The day before the event, Ms. Li, the instructor, paired each international student with a Chinese partner to help with ingredients or language. A girl stepped over, glass jars clinking softly in her hand. “Hi! I’m Lin,” she said brightly, holding up one of the jars with a smile. “I brought some homemade sauces — they work with all kinds of dishes, just in case someone needs a little extra flavor or a quick fix.” I shook her hand quickly, gesturing to my backpack. “I brought everything I need.”
By the day of “Taste of the Globe” I walked into the kitchen full of confidence. The room was already buzzing — other exchange students were all ready to dive in. I rolled up my sleeves, then grabbed a pot from the shelf, set it on the stove, and turned the flame to medium. With a quick chop, I dropped the onions and carrots into the pan, their scent mixing with the sizzle of ground beef I dumped in next. I checked the oven temperature, adjusted it to 180 degrees, and nodded.
Everything was on track, and the tasting would start soon. I reached into the side pocket for the final touch. My fingers met nothing — so I unzipped it, flipped the bag upside down, and still nothing. The jar was gone. My heart skipped a beat. I realized there was no time to make tomato sauce from the beginning.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

At the thought of ruining the recipe, my heart sank.

【答案】Dear Max,
I hope this email finds you well. I’m writing to share an amazing experience with you. Last week in the music class, our teacher led us to experience traditional Chinese musical instruments.
First, the teacher introduced different instruments like the guzheng and erhu, explaining their unique sounds and histories. Then, we got the chance to play some simple melodies on them. It was quite challenging at first, but gradually I got the hang of it.
I felt really excited during this process. It was a great way to get closer to Chinese culture. I’m eager to learn more about these wonderful instruments.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】 At the thought of ruining the recipe, my heart sank. Just then, Lin came over, concern written all over her face. “What’s wrong ” she asked. I explained about the missing jam, feeling completely hopeless. Lin smiled warmly, “Don't worry. Try my sauce.” I hesitated, thinking it might mess up the traditional taste. But with time running out, I had no choice. I added a spoonful of her sauce. As the dish cooked, a wonderful smell filled the air.
Ms. Li praised the dish for its perfectly mixed taste. “Whose creative idea was it to add this special sauce ” she asked. I looked at Lin, then back at Ms. Li. “It was Lin’s. She saved the day when I thought all was lost.” Lin blushed. Other students gathered around, asking for the recipe. This unexpected cooperation not only made a delicious dish but also bridged our two cultures, making “Taste of the Globe” truly special.
