A bone age study helps doctors decide the growing speed of a child's bones, which is done by taking an X-ray of the left wrist and hand--a safe and painless course that uses a small number of radiation(放射物).
A child's bones, such as those in the fingers and wrist, include "growing zones" at both ends called growth plates. These plates include special cells that are useful for the bones' growth in length. It's easy to recognize growth plates on an X-ray because they're softer and include less water, which makes them appear darker on an X-ray image(影像) than the rest of the bone.
As children grow, growth plates change in appearance on the X-ray images and become thinner, finally disappearing.Because they look different at a different age, a doctor can decide a bone age based on the appearance of the bones and growth plates. A child's bone age is judged by comparing the appearance of the child’s bones on the X-ray with the standard information.
The bone age study can help judge how fast or slowly a child's bone is growing, which can help doctors find out reasons that put off or increase the speed of growth.
A bone age X-ray doesn't need special preparation. A child will be asked to take off all clothes from the area that will be on X-ray, because they can influence the results of the image.
A child will be asked to enter a special room that will probably include a table and a large X-ray machine, sit on a small seat and put his or her left hand on the table with fingers spread. A protective object will be offered. The child will also be asked to keep unmovable for several seconds while the X-ray is taken, which is important to make sure that X-ray image is clear.
In general, X-rays are very safe. Although radiation does harm to the body, the total number used in a bone age study is small and not considered dangerous.
The bone age study is carried out in order to___________.
A. stop a kid from growing too fast B. make a thinner kid on weight
C. know about a kid’s future appearance D. help deal with a kid’s growth problem
While the X-ray is taken, a kid has to_________.
A. stay silent for a few seconds B. be prepared by emptying the stomach
C. put on all the clothes D. be given something to avoid radiation
What's the main purpose of the passage
A.To give information about the bone age study.
B. To list some reasons for the bone age study.
C. To show the importance of the bone age study.
D. To describe the problems of the bone age study.

It was a cold, rainy afternoon when Emma found the letter. She'd been cleaning out her grandmother's attic, sorting through old boxes filled with photographs, books, and trinkets. The letter was hidden inside a dusty, leather-bound journal, its edges yellowed with age. The handwriting on the envelope was elegant but unfamiliar, and the postmark was from over fifty years ago.
Emma carefully opened the letter, her heart racing with curiosity. The words were written in a flowing script, and as she read, she felt as though she had stepped into another world. The letter was from a man named Thomas, addressed to her grandmother, Clara. It spoke of a love that had been kept secret, a promise that had been broken, and a decision that had changed both of their lives forever.
Thomas wrote about how he had been forced to leave town suddenly, without being able to say goodbye. He explained that he'd wanted to take Clara with him, but conditions had made it impossible. He ended the letter with a plea for forgiveness and a hope that one day they might meet again.
Emma sat in silence, the letter resting in her hands. She had always known her grandmother as a strong, independent woman who was well-known for her articles. But this letter opened a side of Clara that Emma had never imagined. She wondered why her grandmother had kept this letter hidden for so many years and what had happened to Thomas each would wear the scarves as a symbol of their friendship. Kathy had no idea that she was going to America that night and would not be returning.
Kathy kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Kathy was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, “Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see. It is going to bring both of us luck today.”And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.
That afternoon Eliza left the interview, feeling sure that she would get the job. So she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. As she was sitting at her table, she felt someone looking at her. Sitting next to her was an old woman, who could not take her eyes away from her.
“I'm sorry, do I know you " Eliza asked.
“I'm sorry, dear, but you make me think of someone I once knew,”the old woman replied.“My best friend looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like the one you're wearing around your neck.”Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this be Monica, her grandmother's childhood friend
Eliza introduced herself and waited to hear the name of the other woman.
“My name's Monica, dear. I lived in Hungary as a child, but my family had to leave when I was fourteen years old. I've been living here in California ever since.”said the old woman.
Eliza could not believe her ears ...

A new school has opened recently. Its pupils walk into class in a line to start their lessons, turn on their computers and follow their teacher's instructions. For an hour, they are taught how to use the mouse, the keyboard and the computer. Nothing unusual about that, you might think; except that these pupils are toddlers, aged just two or three.
We asked two experts their opinions on the growing phenomenon(现象) of“technology for toddlers": Do you think we should teach computer skills to very young children
Judy Clarke, Director of Technology, York College
At my college, we think that “ ▲ ”. Although the usual age for the national school exams is 16, we put our best pupils forward for exams if we think they are ready. They might be just seven years old. Having had great success with these courses, we began to think about the“Technology for Toddlers”classes. They are aimed at giving pre-school pupils a head start not only in technology skills, but also in writing, reading and communication using the computer. Apart from the actual lessons, we also encourage parents to get the children to practise their new skills at home. Parents say to me all the time, “Sarah can count up to 30 and is ahead of other kids of her age” or “Jack has gained so much confidence from your classes.” Praises like these make it all worthwhile for me. I think it's a crime to hold children back. Most children love computers and they learn quickly. Starting young means they won't have to waste time in their secondary school years catching up on all the computer skills they need.
Alan Jackson, educational psychologist, Cardiff
I've worked as an educational psychologist for many years and I must say that I'm very concerned about this trend that encourages younger and younger children to use computers. The bad influences of looking at a screen for a long time at a young age are clear. The lack of physical exercise, for example, can lead to being overweight and the lack of communication with real people can lead to problems with speech development. These are just two of the problems, but I could go on and on. It is bad enough for older children, but the idea of children as young as two being actively encouraged to go to computer lessons shocks me. I feel sorry for these children who clearly need to be running around and climbing trees with their friends. In my opinion, two parties are to blame: the colleges which run these courses and the parents of these children. They should be ashamed of their inability to think about the short and long-term influences on the children. As far as I can see, the former is just interested in publicity and profit(利益),and the latter purely in satisfying themselves.

Hanfu has been popular in recent years. A growing number of young people in China are starting to wear the traditional Han Chinese clothing. And the trend is not just popular among Chinese people. Some foreigners living in China have also fallen in love with Hanfu. Among them is a young Brazilian man named Rian.
Rian lives in Xi'an. Two years ago, he came to the beautiful city and became an English teacher at a kindergarten. After seeing many people wearing Hanfu in his city, Rian developed a strong interest in it. He soon began making short videos of himself trying on Hanfu.
“I want to share Chinese culture with the world,” the Brazilian said when he was asked why he made those short videos. He hopes to teach people about this beautiful culture in his own way.
“Today I'm dressed in Song style,” said Rian in a short video, after putting on the clothes skillfully. In the video, he also introduced the very fine and beautiful design of the clothes.
But Rian loves the Tang-style Hanfu the most. “My first taste of Hanfu was the Tang style,” said the young man. Although the traditional outfit is difficult to put on, he feels comfortable while wearing it. Every time he puts it on, he feels as if he has traveled back to ancient times.
Hanfu has helped Rian to learn more about China. In the past, the only thing he knew about the country was that it had a long history and a profound culture. But now Hanfu has shown him more details about Chinese culture. Rian plans to stay in Xi'an for at least another five years. He'll continue to make short videos about Hanfu. He is going to post these videos up on Western social media platforms in hopes of teaching more people about the rich culture of China.
