Re: Do you have any history book recommendations by LinguaSpark May 4th,2025,5:25 pm Hi, Cayitam! I’d recommend Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari. It’s a fascinating introduction to human history, telling the story of humans from ancient days to today’s modern world. The book talks about big turning points in human history. Harari also asks interesting questions, such as whether things like money or nations are just “stories” we all believe in together. It’s an easy-to-read book that makes you think differently about history. Happy reading! LinguaSpark Posts: 2 Joined: May 4th, 2025,5:25 pm

“The Five-Starred Red Flag flies high…” Whenever we hear the song, we will sing along. The song is called Ode to the Motherland (《歌唱祖国》). It was written by Wang Xin.
On October 1, 1949, Wang Xin attended the Founding Ceremony (开国大典) of the People’s Republic of China. He was deeply moved and decided to write a song at once for New China with his love and pride. He had many ideas but none was good enough to him.
One day in September 1950, on the way to Beijing Railway Station, Wang Xin walked past Tian’anmen Square. The moment he saw the Five-Starred Red Flag flying in the wind, a few words for the song came into his mind. On the train back to Tianjin, when he saw the fields and mountains outside the window, the main part of the song began to take shape, “Over the mountains, across the plains (平原)…”
When Wang Xin arrived home, he said with excitement, “I made it! I made it!” He completed the whole song right away. The next morning, he went to a local newspaper, hoping to get the song published. But it wasn’t accepted.
However, Wang Xin didn’t give up. He led a music group to perform the song in different places. The song really brought people power, pride and more love for the country.
In September 1951, Ode to the Motherland was finally published in the People’s Daily and got popular across the country. From then on, it was sung during many important national events.
Wang Xin once said, “I’ve written many works in my life, but I believe I’ve only written ‘two songs’. One is Ode to the Motherland, a song written with musical notes (音符), and the other is a song written for the motherland with all my heart.”
24. Why does the writer begin the text with part of a song
A. To answer a question. B. To catch readers’ interest.
C. To start a conversation. D. To introduce the writer’s plan.
25. When did Wang Xin decide to write a song for New China
A. In October 1949. B. In September 1950.
C. In October 1950. D. In September 1951.
26. What spirit can we learn from Wang Xin
A. Never giving up. B. Never showing off.
C. Keeping on learning. D. Helping those in need.
27. What can we infer (推断) from Wang Xin’s words in the last paragraph
A. He sang two songs in his life. B. He put his heart into his own life.
C. He wrote a song in two cities. D. He had deep love for the motherland.

①Do you sometimes feel too afraid to try new things If you want to grow and get better you need to take risks and challenge yourself. But your brain often tells you to stay safe. It might say, “Don’t bother trying something new.” Even when these thoughts aren’t reasonable, our anxiety (担心) can still win. Instead of thinking about the good things that could happen, we worry more about “What if something goes wrong ”
②Avoiding all risks might seem smart, but it can make you feel unhappy. The problem is that we often make decisions based on feelings, not facts. We think, “The more scared I feel, the riskier it is.” But feelings aren’t always reasonable. If we knew how to think about risks clearly, we’d know which risks are worth taking. For example, trying a new hobby like painting might feel scary at first, but it could bring you joy and new skills.
③Whether you’re afraid to change your job or too nervous to ask a friend for coffee, learning to take “good risks” can improve your life. Here are good ways to help.
④Balance feelings with facts. Many times, we think fear means something risky. But that’s not true. For example, driving a car feels safe because we do it every day, but giving a speech in public might make your heart beat fast. Yet the fact shows that car accidents are much more common than getting hurt while speaking! So before you avoid doing something scary, take three deep breaths and ask yourself, “What’s the real risk here ”
⑤Take steps to succeed. You can do many small things to lower risks. If you’re nervous about a test, make a study plan and review each day—this helps you feel more prepared. It’s okay to feel butterflies in your stomach when you try something new. Facing fear helps build your mental muscle, just like exercising builds physical muscle. So, taking smart risks helps you become mentally stronger. Each time you try something scary, you will learn to deal with uncertainty and anxiety. You’ll also get new skills and grow from mistakes. If you try out for a dance team and don’t make it, you can ask for the reason and then practise more. With practice, you’ll get better at facing risks, and your chances of success will rise.
28. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first two paragraphs
A. Avoiding risks is a smart way to stay happy.
B Taking risks requires us to trust our feelings.
C. Our brain often tells us to face challenges bravely.
D. Our feelings often influence us to make decisions.
29. What does the underlined phrase “build your mental muscle” mean in the last paragraph
A. Develop strength in your mind. B. Exercise your body to stay healthy.
C. Think mainly about cheerful things. D. Avoid situations that make you afraid.
30. What is the structure of this passage (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2...)
A. B. C. D.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Taking smart risks can push us forward.
B. Trying many small things can reduce risks.
C. Learning clearly about real risks can help a lot.
D. Practising more can help deal with risks better.

Have you ever wondered what else you can do on the train besides sleeping or scrolling through your phone Actually, in China, trains have turned into centres which bring together the public and the nation’s intangible cultural Heritage (ICH,非物质文化遗产).
Trains go across China and they are becoming ideal places for introducing local traditional culture. A good example is the K7041 train from Harbin to Mohe in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province. On the ICH train, Gulayier, dressed in traditional clothes, sang Oroqen folk songs and his partner played the Oroqen jaw harp, a musical instrument. Tourists on the train, especially those from southern China, sang and danced excitedly with the two performers (表演者) together. Gulayier said the train made it easier to hold tourists’ attention to his shows. He thought the train was a good platform for promoting (促进) ICH.
Traditional heritage comes to life on trains. More ICH such as Qinhuai lanterns from Nanjing, Yulin puppet shows, and tea-picking operas in Guangxi has also made appearances on high-speed trains across China. It offers passengers a close-up way to experience traditional culture.
Professor Xiao Fang from Beijing Normal University shares Gulayier’s opinion on the new use of ICH trains. He has pointed out another advantage of this. Beyond cultural promotion, it offers help for tourism. When passengers enjoy local traditions on board, they often develop a deeper interest in exploring the places they pass through.
However, the ICH train journeys still have challenges, including the narrow space on trains and passengers getting on and off at each station. Therefore, some solutions are coming up cultural corners show traditional arts, and QR codes connect to more digital information. These help passengers to explore ICH at their own pace and continue learning after their journey ends.
The success of ICH trains offers valuable lessons for cultural protection worldwide, proving that innovation (革新) and tradition can work together to keep cultural heritage alive for future generations.
32. What is the fresh experience for passengers on the K7041 train
A. Travelling farther north. B. Joining in live shows.
C. Wearing traditional clothes. D. Having fun on the phone.
33. What do Gulayier and Professor Xiao both agree
A. ICH encourages more local visits.
B. Trains help make ICH more popular.
C. ICH improves the Chinese train journeys.
D. Passengers welcome performers on ICH trains.
34. What does paragraph 5 mention about the ICH train journeys
A. Their features and influence. B. Their reasons and results.
C. Their problems and methods. D. Their future and improvement.
35. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Trains push China’s cultural heritage further.
B. China puts arms around local artists on ICH trains.
C. More ICH trains begin running on railways in China.
D. Train passengers share different local cultures of China.
Ⅲ. Complete the Passage(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
“What do you think I should do ” asks your friend, as she sits beside you, waiting for your advice. This is no easy situation. Say something your friend disagrees with or something helpless, and you might feel you’ve disappointed her.
It’s human nature to want to offer solutions when someone comes to you with a problem. It’s also easy to fall into the trap of simply saying that “Everything will be OK”. ____36____ But we often say that because we believe we need to say something. This is because we’re glad that our friend has come to us for help, even if we don’t really think we’re able to give it. ____37____ The answer is yes... if it’s done in the right way.
In fact, friends often really only want someone to listen to them. It’s important to try to work out whether they’re actually asking for advice, or simply wanting to talk over whatever is going round in their head. ____38____ There’s no harm in asking whether they’d like you to give suggestions.
It’s also important to be honest. If you’re unable to think of a way to solve your friends’ problem, just say so. Your friends won’t feel upset, and you can still listen carefully and try to put yourself in their shoes. ____39____ You can ask yourself “What would I do if I were to experience the same thing ” Later you can go back to your friends with a few helpful suggestions.
____40____ It can be hard to listen to your friends going over and over the same thing without being able to help them. They will certainly be thankful if you just allow them to “talk it out”, though. Maybe they’re building up courage to take action, and need to convince (说服) themselves they’re doing the right thing. Just being there for them may be all you have to do to make things better.
A. Friendship is the most important to us.
B. This is not actually useful for your friend.
C. So is it a good idea to try to give advice at all
D. You can find someone else to ask for their ideas.
E. Sometimes a problem doesn’t go away overnight.
F. Talking may make people feel better all by themselves.
G. Then you can go away and try to think of something helpful.

With the development of science and technology, we have learned a lot about animals. Emperor penguins can grow up to 1.2 meters tall, and they are the ____51____ (large) of all the penguin kinds. In 2022, they were listed as endangered animals because the Antarctic sea ice that they live ____52____ is becoming smaller and smaller. Now scientists are using high technology ____53____ (follow) them and learn more about how to protect them.
One of the ____54____ (way) researchers are able to do this is by looking at pictures taken by satellites above the Earth. When scientists first started looking at the penguins by satellites, there were only 28 groups. So far, scientists ____55____ (discover) 66 groups.
Even using satellites, it is so difficult to count how many penguins live in different groups. Scientists can improve population estimates (估计) by watching the area’s weather ____56____ (careful). Measuring the wind speed and temperature can help predict if the penguins gather closely together ____57____ spread apart across the ice. If scientists know what the weather was like when the pictures were taken, they can estimate how many penguins are pictured.
Scientists can also watch penguins’ movements by giving ____58____ (they) special trackers (追踪器). A scanner (扫描仪) ____59____ (carry) by a robot, and it can read information on the tags. AI also helps the robot recognize the penguins. It moves very slowly so that it doesn’t make the birds stressed.

VI. Reading Expression(每空一词,共5小题,每题2分,共10分)
Lots of kids like to play computer and mobile games these days. Is this good or bad for us How do we deal with this problem
In my opinion, playing games can really help us relax. As the old saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” For example, when I finish five days of studying, I feel tired, that’s why I like to play a game called King of Glory with my classmates. We all have lots of fun playing and talking about it. When we win, we feel happy. And when we lose, we still want to play more. I think that’s why so many students in our school like to play the game. It can not only help us relax, but also strengthen our friendship.
In addition, playing games can exercise our brains and help us think more quickly. When we start to play a new game, we’re not very good at it. But we can get better through practice. This process exercises our brains and makes them more active. However, you should make sure that you have finished all of your homework before you play games.
Still, some students seem like they are addicted (上瘾的) to games. They can’t control their eyes, and they can’t control their health either. They will feel tired in class the next day, which will affect their studies. That’s not very responsible.
Therefore, I can only say that we should try to be self-disciplined (自律的) and responsible when working out how much time we should spend playing video games.
61. There are some ________ of playing computer games, such as helping us ________; exercising our brains.
62. We may feel tired ________ five days’ hard work at school. We can have a great time ________ games.
63. We can practice more when starting to play a new game which we aren’t good at. This process can make our brains ________ ________.
64. Some students, who seem to be crazy ________ games, can’t control both their eyes ________ their health.
65. What will happen in class the next day if a student is addicted to games
