Theme parks and amusement parks will be standing tall this season, not just in the sense of proudly displaying their shiny, brand spanking new rides. The most expected ride of 2024, however, will take you for a face-to-face encounter with thrilling adventure.
Banshee at Kings Island, Mason, Ohio. Inverted (倒置的) feature trains that hang suspended from the track above and leave passengers’ legs hanging. Goliath at Six Flags Great America, Gurnee, Illinois. The creative company that is building this new coaster has an impressive track record of delivering incredibly smooth and satisfying thrill machines. Mark Twain is one of the most celebrated authors in all of American literature. Mark Twain was widely respected during his lifetime for his sharp satire(讽刺), characteristic humor, and much-loved characters.
Twain’s literary journey began with his first successful story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County (1865), a masterpiece of humor. It was not long after the publication of this story that Twain traveled to Hawaii, then known as the Sandwich Islands, to work as a reporter. His work mainly consisted of writing travel letters which were very well-received by readers. The letters focused on humor as well as the Sandwich Islands and the success of these letters became the basis for his frequent lectures. During the 1860s, lectures were a popular form of entertainment, much like going to the cinema today. Twain’s lectures offered humorous accounts of his trips to places like the Sandwich Islands, Paris, Egypt, and other various locations. These lectures, beyond providing him with additional money to support future travels, also brought more attention to his written works.
In 1873, Twain's first novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today was published. It was written with his friend and neighbor Charles. While the use of humor and satire was praised in the novel, it was not considered successful due to its lack of cohesion(凝聚力)since it was written separately by the two writers. One reviewer compared it to a poorly mixed salad dressing.
Twain’s next attempt at a novel was much more successful. Published in 1876, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of the most successful works of children’s literature in history. Praised for its humor and description of life in Missouri along the Mississippi River, the novel is still in print today and has been adapted into television shows, films, stage plays, and even video games.
24.Which work marked the beginning of Twain’s writing career
A.The Million Pound Bank Note. B.The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
C.The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today. D.The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.
25.What was one of the key topics in Twain’s travel letters during the 1860s
A.Popular lectures. B.Historical accounts.
C.The Sandwich Islands. D.The Mississippi River.
26.What can be learned from paragraph 3 about Twain’s first novel
A.It was co-written. B.It was successful.
C.It was for children. D.It was adapted into games.
27.What is a shared element in Twain’s works mentioned in this text
A.War. B.Humor. C.Love. D.Money.

In Kenya’s countryside, many women had to struggle with dried-up streams, food shortages, and long journeys to collect firewood for fuel and fencing — problems mainly caused by deforestation (森林砍伐). To solve these issues, Professor Wangari Maathai started the Green Belt Movement (GBM) in 1977 to encourage women to work together to plant trees, which would help hold soil, store rainwater, and provide food and firewood. By doing so, they could also earn small payments for their work.
The movement started with just seven trees planted on World Environment Day in 1977. Yet within months, it grew into a national effort with thousands of trees planted in rows to form “green belts”. As the trees took root, Professor Maathai saw something deeper. The women’s struggles went beyond drought to their lack of voice in community decisions. In response, the Green Belt Movement launched the Community Empowerment (赋权) and Education conferences to teach people how to stand up for their rights while protecting the land, empowering women to lead and challenge the traditional roles.
Looking back, the journey has by no means been easy. Time and again, the group stood against powerful interests — from stopping a 60-story building in Nairobi’s Uhuru Park (1989) to saving Karura Forest from privatization (1999). These victories came at great risk. Professor Maathai and members always faced violent attacks and even death threats during protests. Yet, GBM never stopped. To date, hundreds of thousands of women have become involved, and over 5,000 tree farms have been established. More than 51 million trees have been planted — on farms, in schools and churches, along rivers, and throughout the nation, contributing significantly to environmental protection and sustainable development.
In 2004, Professor Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions to sustainable development, democracy (民主) and peace. Today, the work of Professor Maathai and the Green Belt Movement continues to stand as living proof that small actions make big changes.
28.Why did Professor Maathai originally start the Green Belt Movement
A.To ensure food safety. B.To create job opportunities.
C.To unite women for land rights. D.To help women overcome environmental hardships.
29.What did Professor Maathai realize after the movement started
A. Lack of community fund. B. Women’s absence from community decisions.
C. Strong disagreements from powerful interests. D. Difficulty in growing trees in drought-hit areas.
30.Which of the following best describes the Green Belt Movement
A.Tough but successful. B.Traditional but significant.
C.Unrecognized but sustainable. D.Limited but well-known.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Trees for a Greener World B.Green Roots to Empowerment
C.Facing Preservation Challenges D.Empowering Women through Leadership

A wheeled robot rolls across the floor. A soft-bodied robotic star bends its five legs, moving awkwardly. Powered by conventional electricity, these simple robotic creations would be ordinary, but what sets these two robots apart is that they are controlled by a living organism: a king oyster mushroom.
By growing the mushroom’s mycelium (菌丝体) into the robot’s hardware, a team led by Cornell University researchers has engineered two types of robots that sense and respond to the environment by using electrical signals made by the fungus (真菌) and its sensitivity to light. The robots are the latest accomplishment of scientists in a field known as biohybrid (生物混合的) robotics which seek to combine biological, living materials such as plant and animal cells or insects with synthetic components to make partly living and partly engineered robots. Biohybrid robots have yet to go beyond the lab, but researchers hope one day they may explore oceans or search for survivors after an earthguake.
“Biohybridization is an attempt to find components in the biological world that we can use, understand, and control to help our artificial systems work better,” said Robert Shepherd, a professor at Cornell University who leads the Organic Robotics Lab.
Fungi can be cultivated in large quantities and thrive in many different environments. Fungi may have advantages over other biohybrid approaches in terms of the conditions required to keep them alive. This could make them an excellent candidate for biohybrid robots for applications in agriculture and marine exploration. The lab has produced more than 30 sensing and computing devices using live fungi.
However, some experts show their concerns that if biohybrid robots become more complex and are applied in the ocean or other ecosystems, it could disturb the habitats, challenging the traditional distinction between life and machine. Currently, this research hasn’t raised ethical questions, but if it continues to develop, it’s vital to consider the consequences of releasing them in the open.
32. What can we learn about biohybrid robots from the first two paragraphs
A. They are controlled by human cells.
B. They are applied to rescue operations.
C. They may be sensitive to electrical signals.
D. They may have many practical applications.
33.Why are fungi used for biohybrid robots
A. They are in large numbers. B. They respond to the environment quickly.
C. They are readily available. D. They can survive in different environments.
34. What is the potential problem with biohybrid robots
A. Damaging ecosystems. B. Confusing humans with machines.
C. Losing control. D. Replacing humans on certain jobs.
35. What is the purpose of the text
A. To warn about the risks of biohybrid robots.
B. To present the concept of biohybrid robots.
C. To introduce the new development of robots.
D. To question the benefits of engineered robots

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French bread and chicken porridge(粥).
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The twins went downstairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Tom broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Amy found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Tom turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Tom started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Amy threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Tom noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid(盖子) starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Amy was scared. Thankfully, Tom stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Amy told Tom to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Tom’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Amy made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

One possible version:
Recently, we have had a heated discussion on whether humans should explore the deep sea. Different students have different opinions on this matter, which are as follows.
Some students hold the view that humans should explore the deep sea. First, They think the ocean has rich resources, like energy and minerals, which may solve resource shortages potentially. Besides, it can helps us understand climate change better. However, other students disagree. They worry exploration might pollute the ocean and harm marine life. In addition, deep sea exlporation demands financial investment, and the economic benefits may not be guaranteed.
In my opinion, we should explore the deap ocean but in a responsible way. We need to protect it while making good use of its treasures.

W: Good morning, folks. I’m Connie Johnson here with this week’s weather report. Today, we’re going to see blue skies and a high of 90 degrees. Don’t forget your sunscreen! It’s only 9:00 in the morning, and the temperature has already risen to 85 degrees. Looking at the week ahead, it’s clear that we’ve officially entered summer. Tuesday through Friday, we’ll see temperatures in the 80s and 90s. We’ll get a bit of a break this weekend, when temperatures drop to the mid-70s. This week and possibly part of next week, there will be periods of high winds, especially in the south. Please watch out for wildfires, and if you see any smoke, be sure to call emergency services right away. We don’t want another fire like the one we had in Middleton County last year. When temperatures are this hot, it’s important to drink a lot of water, and to stay out of the sun. It’s especially important to watch young children and older people for signs of overheating and loss of water. Well, that’s it, folks. Stay cool out there!
