Countries around the world celebrate different festivals every year. This month we are looking at two of those festivals.
Holi Festival, London by Emlyn Richardson This traditional Hindu festival celebrates the beginning of spring. It’s a festival of colour and it’s mainly celebrated in India and Nepal, but is also celebrated in Europe and North America, where a lot of Hindu people live. That includes London, where five percent of the population is Hindu. In India, they celebrate it by throwing coloured powder and splashing water over each other. The streets explode with colour. Runners have powder paint thrown over them as they pass by! Hindus believe that the coloured paint makes everyone look the same, so that people forget their differences. In London, the Colour Run celebrates the festival too. It’s an unforgettable day! You need a ticket to take part. Go online to find out how to get your ticket. You won’t regret it!
The Monkey Buffet by Daw Cunningham Wild monkeys in Thailand (泰国) are so popular that they even have a festival—The Monkey Buffet. The local people believe that monkeys bring good luck. Mike’s father was an architect (建筑师) and his mother was a librarian. When Mike came home from school, there was never anybody at home. He used to get the sandwich his mother always left for him in the kitchen. And then he used to start his homework on the computer. But this week he was working on a project about famous people in technology. He started to daydream!
I might be a programmer when I grow up!
I could make a lot of money!
I’d have my own helicopter to pick me up!
Wouldn’t that be funny
The front door banged. It was Mike’s mother. She asked about his day. “I’ve been finding out about famous people in technology. Mark Zuckerberg was only twelve when he became a computer programmer. I’m twelve! I want to work too!” Mum laughed, “Work hard at school, you might be an architect like your dad one day.” Mike started daydreaming again.
I might be an architect in the future!
I might build flats and be a star in architecture!
Or build strange palaces for Kings!
The front door banged again. It must be his dad back from work. Good!
“Hello” his father said, when Mike ran into the kitchen. “What have you been doing today ” Mike told him about Bill Gates who gets 250 dollars every second, and how he was now one of the most successful people in the world. “I’d like to start working,” he told his father.
“Try dog walking!” his dad suggested. “A lot of people don’t have time to walk their dogs.” His dad was only joking, but Mike started to daydream again.
I might be a dog walker; I may do it after school!
I could do that now!
I might start a company, that’d be so cool!

The Brooklyn Bridge is traveled by thousands of people every day. This amazing sight starts with one man’s idea.
·A plan forms
In 1831 John Roebling suggested a bridge with cables made of steel (钢), connected by two stone towers, to make it stronger than any bridge ever built. Trains and cars could run across the bridge together. Also, above the roads would be a path for people to walk over the bridge slowly on fine days. In 1867, his plan was agreed.
·Building begins
The Bridge began to be built in 1869. It was very dangerous work that caused many deaths, including the first engineer John Roebling. His son Washington took over as head engineer with his wife Emily’s help. When Washington got sick in the 1870s, Emily took charge of the whole project. Fourteen years later, the bridge was finally completed in 1883. It became the world’s longest suspension bridge at that time.
·The bridge opens
The bridge opened with a big celebration on May 24, 1883. Thousands of people came to see it. Emily, who helped build the bridge, was the first to cross it. In just one day, about 250,000 people paid one cent each to walk across. Later, in the 1900s, more people drove cars instead of taking trains. So from 1944 to 1954, workers changed the bridge. They took out the old train tracks (轨道) and made more space for cars. Now the bridge has six lanes (车道) for cars to drive on.
·A historic landmark
The Brooklyn Bridge became a famous historic place in 1964 and again in 1972. In 2021, it got new bike lanes because more people ride bikes now. The bridge is 1,833 meters long and free to cross. Every day, it carries 110,000 cars, 3,000 walkers, and 3,000 cyclists. People love it for its beautiful views in both directions.
8. Which of the pictures most probably show John Roebling’s idea in 1831
A. B. C. D.
9. What does the underlined phrase “took charge of” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Managed. B. Sold. C. Avoided. D. Wrote.
10. What can we know about Brooklyn Bridge according to the text
A. People need to pay to cross it now. B. It has a history of 142 years.
C. Bikes are not allowed to ride on it. D. It has been famous since 1972.

C. A Dream of Brooklyn D. A Wonder of Engineering

The idea behind the expression “you are what you eat” is that you need to eat healthy food to be healthy and that eating unhealthy food will likely result in you not feeling your best. Did you know that your brain (大脑) health is also influenced (影响) by the food you eat
Your brain is like the boss of your body! It controls everything you do, from breathing to thinking. Even though it’s only 2% of your weight, it uses 20% of your energy—that’s like one-fifth of the energy your body needs! Your brain burns most of its energy when brain cells talk to each other. The more difficult the task is, the more energy your brain uses (for example, solving a hard math problem vs watching TV), but the difference is still relatively small.
Your brain runs on food, just like a car runs on gas! Healthy foods with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (like fruits and vegetables) help your brain stay smart and happy. But junk food, especially snacks high in sugar or fat, can slow you down and even make you get angry easily. To keep your brain strong now and in the future, choose healthy foods and eat less unhealthy foods.
“Eat the Rainbow” is another expression that means eating fruits and vegetables of different colors every day. Different colors mean different nutrients that work to improve health. Eating fruits and vegetables in all colors gives you and your brain the most benefits!
What you eat can change how you feel! Foods with lots of chemicals might taste good, but they can make your stomach uncomfortable and even make you feel moody (喜怒无常的). Scientists now know that a healthy stomach helps keep your brain happy too.
Your brain is like your body’s control center—feed it good food like fruits and vegetables to help it stay smart!
12. Which task needs your brain to burn most of its energy
A. Listening to a song. B. Watching a football match.
C. Enjoying a magic show. D. Having a difficult math test.
13. What may happen to your brain when you eat junk food
A. It wastes more brain energy. B. It makes the brain work faster.
C. It helps the brain store memories. D. It slows thinking and changes feelings.
14. Which food group will you choose if you “Eat the Rainbow” according to the text
A. Chocolate and candies. B. Rice and white bread.
C. Fruits and vegetables. D. Fried chicken and hamburgers.
15. What’s the main purpose of the text
A. To show food’s influence on brain health. B. To explain what energy our brain needs.
C. To list advantages of eating healthy food. D. To teach ways of cooking colorful meals.

It’s great that you like your things! Ask yourself whether you really value and use it, or whether you just want to hang on to it. List what you have, from what you love most to least. Maybe you’ll decide which one to let go. To help you decide, try an experiment. ___17___ At the end of the month, you might consider giving away what you didn’t use. You aren’t alone. ___18___ Adults disagree at times, just as kids do. It’s natural to wish you could make your parents stop arguing, but that isn’t your responsibility. They must solve their own disagreements. If you feel unhappy, do activities you enjoy or write or draw to express how you feel. ___19___ You might say, “When I hear you arguing, I feel worried and afraid.” You can also talk things over with a teacher. Lots of kids (and adults!) feel the same way you do. Try to understand the feeling better. You could ask yourself questions, like “When do I feel most afraid Do noises or storms make it worse ” Make a list of what you think can be scary about the dark. Then think about whether you really need to fear those things. Talk with a parent about the things on your list, too, and ways to handle them.
A. Notice what you use over a month’s time. B. I am afraid of the dark, but I’m not sure why. C. Many kids feel unhappy when their parents argue. D. When things are calm, tell your parents how you feel. E. I want to know more about storms but just don’t know how.
Give another piece of advice to Madelyn or Michael. (No more than 15 words.)
