Paragraph 1:
The morning sun was shining when the doctor came in. "Good news," the doctor announced, "It's a slight bony growth. A minor surgery will resolve it completely." A wave of relief washed over me. George squeezed my hand, his eyes glistening with tears. At that moment, the sun seemed to dance across the pale blue walls, chasing away the worries. Remembering my nighttime resolve, I inquired about the girl next door. Upon learning she was a student facing surgery alone and terrified, I asked George to bring my favorite book of poems from home—the same collection I often turned to in my classroom to offer comfort and perspective.
Paragraph 2:
Three months after my successful surgery, I stood in my classroom, sharing my experience with curious students. " I told them what had happened to me and described how I had visited the girl next door after my surgery, reading poems to her as she recovered. We became friends, supporting each other through recovery. "Life will have its slippery paths," I said, looking at their bright faces, "but what defines us isn't the fall - it's how we choose to get up, and whether we extend a hand to others along the way." Outside, snow-covered branches glistened in the sunlight, reminding us that even in the coldest seasons, there's warmth to be found in connection.

Text 1
W: No sandwiches today, Tony That makes a change. (1)
M: It was my sister’s birthday yesterday, so there’s lots of cake that needs to be eaten.
W: I’m having homemade soup for my lunch today. You can try it if you like.
Text 2
M: I read that China’s population is aging rapidly. What do you think that means for the country
W: It could have a big impact on the economy and healthcare. With fewer young people supporting the elderly, the government must make changes to ensure they’re taken care of. (2)
Text 3
M: I thought it was just a mosquito(蚊子) bite, but I became worried when my arm started to hurt.
W: You did the right thing by making an appointment to see me. I can give you some cream that will help to relieve the discomfort. (3)
Text 4
W: Joe, I’m so sorry I forgot your birthday. I don’t know why. I usually remember it every year.
M: Never mind, Sarah. I know you have a lot to think about. (4)
W: I hate missing important dates. I hope you can forgive me.
Text 5
M: How much did your dress cost
W: I bought it in Wal-Mart. It was expensive — it cost 200 yuan. I found the same item in a Chinese store for 20% less. (5)

M: Did you listen to the radio news this morning (6)
W: No, I get my news from the Internet these days. Why do you ask
M: Because the radio announced that Tom Clarke is going to play a concert in our city next month. (6)
W: Really Oh, we have to go to that.
M: I knew you’d say that.
W: Of course. His concerts are fantastic. Did you see him on TV last week
M: Yes, he was great.
W: Those tickets are going to sell out quickly. You need to get some for us. (7)
M: I will. (7) In fact, I’m on my way to the ticket office right now. (7)
Text 7
W: Hello, could you tell me where I can find the ice cream, please (8) (9)
M: You’re the third person to ask me that today.
W: Must be because of the hot weather.
M: Yes, but also because the fridge where it’s kept is hard to find. It’s in the small room at the back of the store. (9)
W: Ah, I see. (9) I didn’t know about that.
M: It’s all right. People often don’t notice it. Anyway, we have a good selection of ice cream.
W: I hope you have chocolate. That’s my favorite.
M: Yes, we do. There’s also a banana flavor. But my favorite is the strawberry. It’s fantastic. You should really try it.
W: I will just do that. Anyway, thank you for your help.
M: My pleasure.
Text 8
W: So, what is today all about (10)
M: The festival is basically a celebration of Chinese dance, in all its different forms. (10)
W: It sounds really cool. Of course, I’ve seen lion and dragon dances, but I don’t know much more than that.
M: You know, my friend and I wanted to be lion dancers.
W: Wow! Really
M: Yeah! Now I’m probably a bit too old to achieve that dream, though. I wouldn’t have the energy!
W: Yeah, I bet you have to be quite strong to carry those heavy costumes, too.
M: Definitely!
W: Is there anything you’re really excited to see today
M: I’m really looking forward to seeing the performance of traditional Dai dances. The Dai are a Chinese minority ethnic(民族的) group whose dances are traditionally based on the movements of different creatures like birds, fish, and insects — it’s so imaginative! (11)
W: Wow, really
M: Yeah. They’re most famous for their “peacock dance”.
W: What’s that like
M: Really impressive. Of course, peacocks are naturally elegant and move smoothly, so the dancers have to be really flexible. (12) It’s truly amazing to watch.
Text 9 (第13题为总结题)
W: Hi there.
M: Hi. Are you the kid who’s just moved in next door
W: Yes, I’m your new neighbor.
M: I saw the trucks last week bringing all your stuff.
W: All the boxes are taken into the house now. It will take forever to sort them out.
M: I remember it was like that when we moved here. It was awful at the start.
W: How long have you lived here
M: About five years. We moved here from Scotland. I liked living in Scotland, but I like it here in England as well. Where did you move from (14)
W: North Wales — just over the border. (14) I’m Cathy, (14) (15) by the way.
M: I’m Stewart. (15) (16) I’ve seen your parents walking around but I haven’t spoken to them yet. (15)
W: They’re planning to come to your house this afternoon to introduce themselves. (15)
M: Oh, I’ll look forward to that. (15)
W: What do you do around here Are there any good places to go
M: It depends on what you like.
W: I like to keep fit.
M: Well, there’s a gym not too far away. I often take exercise there. There’s also a sports hall, where you can swim and play sports. I also go running in the park — it’s beautiful and it doesn’t cost anything. You should definitely try that. You can see me there every morning. (16)
Text 10
Many people know about Pompeii. It was a Roman city which was buried almost 2000 years ago when a volcano erupted. It was later rediscovered and is now one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions. But many people don’t realize that another nearby town was also buried by the volcano — and what has been discovered there is just as interesting. Herculaneum was badly damaged when the volcano erupted in 79 AD. (17) (19) (20) It was covered by mud during the eruption, which quickly hardened into something like rock. Unlike Pompeii, Herculaneum was deeply preserved by the mud. However, experts still recovered some objects such as beds, doors, and food. And in the 1980s, the remains of more than 120 people were discovered along the seashore. It was thought they were trying to escape. Herculaneum was a wealthier town than Pompeii. (18) It had many fine houses with beautiful decorations and wall paintings. The art treasures found at Herculaneum — statues and paintings, are far more various than those from Pompeii. Because Herculaneum was buried deeply, ancient people were unable to dig up the treasures. The most remarkable discovery is 1800 rolls of material covered in writing. (19) They were badly burned but hundreds have been translated. It is estimated that no more than 40 percent of the ancient town has been uncovered so far. (20)

4 Major Travel Trends Set to Define 2025
The travel landscape is constantly evolving. According to a new survey, 2025 will be dominated by travelers chasing unique and novel experiences, with four key trends taking center stage.
Noctourism
Noctourism, the practice of traveling to fully experience the night, is on the rise. This trend will see travelers seeking designated dark-sky zones to admire the solar system through activities like stargazing and tracking constellations. For 60% of respondents, the motivation is to witness the wonders of a clear, light-pollution-free sky. Others see it as a healthier alternative, aiming to reduce their exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays while on holiday.
Longevity Retreats
The classic wellness holiday is getting a modern upgrade with "longevity retreats," which focus on the pursuit of a longer, healthier life. With 60% of travelers interested, these trips incorporate cutting-edge health experiences like red light therapy, cryotherapy, and stem cell treatments. The goal shifts from momentary relaxation to achieving lasting health benefits that extend well beyond the vacation itself.
AI-Led Holidays
While some enjoy the planning stage, many find it overwhelming. The solution for 2025 is turning to Artificial Intelligence. A significant number of travelers are keen to use AI tools to discover less crowded spots or hidden gems, with a growing interest in fully AI-curated itineraries to ensure a perfect, stress-free getaway.
Multigenerational Trips
The trend of "Spending Kids’ Inheritance (遗产)" (SKI) is continuing strongly. Nearly half of all travelers, particularly from older generations, prefer to spend their money on a trip of a lifetime rather than leaving it as an inheritance. This is good news for younger family members, as multi-generational travel will rise in 2025, with 80% of the elderly happy to fund holidays that prioritize shared experiences over material wealth.
21. Why do 60% of respondents choose noctourism according to the passage
A. To enjoy a clear sky without light pollution.
B. To discover less crowded spots or hidden gems.
C. To gain some knowledge about the solar system.
D. To reduce exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays.
22. Which trip highlights lasting positive impact on health
A. Noctourism. B. AI-Led Holidays.
C. Longevity Retreats. D. Multigenerational Trips
23. What can be inferred about multigenerational trips from the text
A. Younger family members usually cover the travel costs.
B. The "Spending Kids’ Inheritance" trend results in their development.
C. Older travelers prefer material wealthy over shared travel experiences.
D. Older travelers fund the trips at the cost of their children’s inheritance.
B
He left no diaries or memoirs. His most substantial contemporary biography, no more than a few paragraphs in all, reveals little beyond the human capacity for understatement. “It was clear that he would one day become an exceptional painter,” the text reads. In the records of art history, there are those figures whose stories remain shadowed by the passage of time. And then there is Rembrandt van Rijn.
Born in 1606 as the Dutch Golden Age dawned, Rembrandt apprenticed under several renowned painters in his youth. His exceptional talent soon earned praise from Constantijn Huygens, private secretary to Prince Frederick Henry, who declared the young artist capable of creating masterpieces equal to ancient wonders.
More and more requests for paintings flooded in, followed by strategic self-branding. By the 1630s, Rembrandt signed works with only his first name, placing himself alongside masters like Leonardo and Raphael. He also took the liberty of adding in a “d” transforming himself from “Rembrant” to “Rembrandt” in an attempt to make his name a play on the Dutch words for “obstruct”(rem) and “light"(brandt) to further underline his signature chiaroscuro (明暗对比) style.
However, his life transformed after his wife's death in 1642. Whether from grief or other pressures, his productivity declined dramatically. By 1655, he faced near financial ruin, with his possessions sold off publicly at very low prices. Though he continued painting, he never fully recovered financially.
Yet this period revealed Rembrandt's profound determination and visceral(出自内心的) approach to art. He took pride in bringing to light the very real sides to human life often sheltered from public view. His unrestricted depictions of marginalized (边缘化的) people, like the homeless—particularly remarkable given contemporary social prejudices—demonstrated his commitment to capturing life's authentic energy.
This distinctive mindset is at the heart of Rembrandt's most long-lasting works, especially his self-portraits. Throughout his career, he created dozens of self-portraits, leaving behind art history's most comprehensive visual autobiography. Viewing these works today offers a unique experience—connecting us not only with the artist, his family and patrons, but ultimately, with ourselves.
24.What can we learn from the first paragraph
A. Rembrandt is no longer a household name today.
B. Rembrandt’s life story is little known to the public.
C. Rembrandt’s works became popular after his death.
D. Rembrandt’s talent was underestimated by most people.
25.What did Rembrandt do for self-branding by the 1630s
A. He linked himself to the greatest artists of the time.
B. He played tricks on his name by adding or deleting letters.
C. He created a totally new name when signing his paintings.
D. He created new Dutch words to describe his painting style.
26.What do the last two paragraphs mainly talked about
A. The economic value of Rembrandt’s self-portraits.
B. Rembrandt’s dedication to exposing life's raw realities.
C. Rembrandt’s contribution to self-portrait painting skills.
D. The real side of Rembrandt’s life that unknown to others.
27.Which of the following words can best describe Rembrandt
A. Cautious and strategic. B. Truthful and determined.
C. Ambitious and inspiring. D. Generous and courageous.
C
Today, the widespread use of English in science, technology, business, diplomacy, and entertainment has motivated millions to learn the language—and these learners are also shaping its development.
Speakers of global English varieties adapt vocabulary to better express their identities, cultures, and daily realities. In the Philippines, many homes have a "dirt kitchen"—not a dirty space, but an outdoor area for most cooking, essential in tropical climates to avoid trapping heat and smells indoors. In Nigeria, a mama put is a street food stall. The term comes from the way its customers usually order food. They say “Mama, put ..” to the woman running the stall (货摊) and point to the dish they want.
Oxford University Press’s Gift of Words campaign asked people who speak more than one language to “gift’ a word from their first to their second language (or vice versa) when no direct English equivalent existed.
Calling these borrowed words as "gifts" is a key shift in perspective. While some prioritize linguistic purity over diversity, seeing external influences as threats to a language’s integrity, this contradicts how language works. Borrowing is part of the natural evolution of all living languages, and English is especially skilled at absorbing elements from others—historically drawing numerous terms from languages like Old Norse, Norman French, Latin, and Ancient Greek.
Contrary to popular belief, multilingualism (not monolingualism) is the norm, with 60%-75% of the global population estimated to speak multiple languages. In this multilingual, digitally connected world, word exchange between languages and cultures has sped up.
Changing attitudes toward multilingualism and linguistic (语言的) variation is crucial to fighting prejudice that discriminates against "wrong" words or accents. Only when we share ownership of English and embrace its diversity can it truly be a gift for all.
28. Why does the author cite "dirt kitchen" and "mama put" in Paragraph 2
A. To explain functions of outdoor kitchens and street food stalls.
B. To provide a clear explanation of how these words come about.
C. To prove English lacks most daily equivalents in non-English countries.
D. To show global English speakers adjust vocabulary for culture and daily life.
29. What can we learn from paragraph 4
A. Borrowing words poses a threat to English.
B. Linguistic purity is less important than diversity.
C. All living languages are influenced by each other.
D. English rarely borrows words from other languages.
30. What is key to reducing linguistic prejudice and discrimination
A. Embracing English in its all diversity.

Past research has shown the negative effects of excessive sugar intake on health, which has informed recommendations to limit consumption of "free" or added sugar to less than 10% of a person's daily caloric intake.
Still, researchers in China and the United States felt that before developing detailed policies for sugar restriction, the "quality of existing evidence needs to be comprehensively evaluated," according to a study published in the journal The BMJ.
In a large review of 73 meta-analyses – which included 8,601 studies – high consumption of added sugar was associated with significantly higher risks of 45 negative health outcomes, including diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, cancer, tooth decay, depression and early death.
Free sugars are those added during the processing of foods, packaged as table sugar, and naturally occurring in honey, fruit juice, vegetable juice and similar products in which the cellular structure of the food has been broken down, according to the FDA. This category does not include sugars naturally occurring in dairy or structurally whole fruits and vegetables.
"Whole food carbohydrates take longer to break down into simple sugars, and a part of them – the fiber – can't be broken down at all," said Dr. Maya Adam, a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine, who wasn't involved in the study. "This means that whole, unprocessed grains don't cause the same spikes in blood sugar that we experience when we eat simple sugars. Blood sugar spikes are the underlying cause of health problems in the long run."
The findings suggest people should limit free sugar intake to less than 25 grams per day.
There are some changes you can make. Be aware of what you're putting in your body by reading nutrition labels when shopping – even the ones on foods you might not think of as sweet, such as bread, breakfast cereals and yogurts. These foods usually have lots of added sugar, Adam said. Cooking and baking at home more often is one of the best ways to reduce sugar intake, said Brooke Aggarwal, an assistant professor of medical sciences at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Getting enough good-quality sleep on a regular basis would also help "as we tend to choose foods higher in sugar when we're tired," she added.
32. Why did a comprehensive review of existing evidence need to be conducted
A. To study sugar and a few diseases. B. To prove existing sugar policies work.
C. To guide future sugar-limiting policies. D. To develop new types of low-sugar foods.
33. According to the FDA, which of the following is considered a free sugar
A. Sugar in fresh apples. B. Sugar in uncut carrots.
C. Sugar added to biscuits. D. Sugar found in plain milk.
34. What does the underlined word "spikes" in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Sharp increases. B. Steady changes.
C. Continuous drops. D. Gradual balances.
35. Which of the following is suggested by Dr. Maya Adam to reduce sugar intake
A. Preparing meals and desserts at home more often.
B. Getting enough good-quality sleep on a regular basis.
C. Limiting free sugar intake to less than 25 grams daily.
D. Checking nutrition labels carefully when buying food.

It is normal for everyone to worry from time to time. However, for some individuals, this worry can grow into a dominant force, stealing their peace and consuming valuable time. 36
Psychologists have developed several theories to explain chronic worrying. One well-known explanation is the "avoidance model." This theory suggests that chronic worriers replace thoughts of clear problem outcomes with a general sense of negativity, which is harder to address. Furthermore, they often hold a superstitious (迷信的) belief that overthinking a threat can magically prevent it from happening.
37 A more effective approach, based on scientific understanding, involves breaking down the worry process.
First, write your worry down. Anxiety, of which worry is a component, is essentially just unfocused fear. When your fear has no clear target, it feels like a confusing, hard-to-handle fantasy. 38 You can do this by making a list: When you are worried about a bunch of things, take a sheet of paper and write down the top five worries in your life. This clarifies and limits your sources of discomfort, making worries emotionally easier to manage.
Second, shift from problems to outcomes. Remember that worry generally focuses on problems but avoids actual outcomes. If you could voice that fear, you would give yourself a chance to plan what to do. So, on your worry list, write down the best, the worst, and the most likely outcomes for each problem. 39 This makes worries specific and gives you a plan—letting you mentally set the problem aside and feel less anxious.
Third, fight your superstitious (迷信的) belief. Give up the magical thinking that if you torture yourself enough about some uncertainty, you will somehow improve the situation. 40 Tell yourself “My worrying won't change the course of events,” Use the science-backed steps here to strengthen this rational thought and break free from useless overthinking.
Simply trying to stop worrying rarely works.
Then add what you would do in each instance.
Chronic worriers often struggle with uncertainty.
The power of your thoughts will not alter the universe.
It's much better to focus on the fear by putting it into words.
This kind of negativity makes it hard for them to take practical steps.
If you are a chronic worrier, you are likely familiar with this struggle.

It was our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. To celebrate, my husband George and I took a short trip to the nearby mountains. We loved the peace of nature, and the autumn colors—golden leaves, crisp air, and quiet trails—made the journey special. Packing a small picnic, we set off along a forest path covered with fallen leaves, laughing as we remembered our early years together.
Halfway up, I slipped on a wet, mossy rock. I cried out, and George quickly caught me before I fell hard. “Are you okay ” he asked, holding me tightly. I tried to stand, but a sharp pain shot through my left ankle. “Just a twist,” I said, not wanting to ruin our day. “I can manage.” But by morning, the pain had worsened. Even with help, I could barely walk. We decided to return home early.
At the hospital, the doctor examined my ankle and ordered an X-ray. While waiting, the silence felt heavy. I thought of my mother’s long illness—how a small issue had led to months of worry. George sat beside me, quietly holding my hand. His calm presence steadied me, though I saw concern in his eyes.
Later, the doctor returned with a serious look. “The X-ray shows something unusual near the joint. We need more tests to understand it fully.” My heart sank. That night, I was admitted for observation. Lying in the pale blue hospital bed, I stared at the ceiling, fear creeping in with the darkness.
Then, through the thin wall, I heard a soft voice from the next room—broken with pain and fear. “I just want to get better…” It was a young woman, barely whispering. In that moment, my own worries quieted. I remembered what I always told my students: We can’t control what happens, but we can choose how we respond. Taking a deep breath, I made a quiet promise: no matter the result, I would face it with courage, not fear. A sense of calm slowly replaced the anxiety. I realized that strength isn’t the absence of fear, but the choice to move forward. Lying in the bed, I heard every tick of the clock echo my thoughts about the upcoming results.
