When I heard college staff were required for a learning exchange trip to Orestad Gymnasium in Copenhagen,I was quick to sign up.I'd heard great things about this innovative school and wanted to see it for myself.Upon arrival,after the students had been paired up with their exchange partners,I was introduced to Anna,the Spanish teacher who would be hosting me.She gave me a tour and I soon understood what makes the school so different. Firstly,there are no classrooms.Instead,the huge open space is divided up into four large "study zones",each on a separate level and connected by stairs.Each study zone is separated by bookshelves to create smaller“group areas”. The few more traditional classrooms,mainly science labs,have glass walls to maintain the open feel.The idea is to create a sense of togetherness and develop the students'independent learning abilities.Learning here is entirely digital,and learning materials can be acquired online at any time.Study schedules are flexible,and teachers act mostly as coaches,leaving students responsible for their own learning.With 110016-to-19-year-olds “running wild”,I expected school days to be noisy.Instead,I was extremely amazed to discover a quiet,focused atmosphere. Giving students adult responsibility seems to help them learn good habits and prepare them for the real world.
