第二节(满分25分)
Lying in bed, Nancy kept thinking about this question. She recalled how she’d forced herself to gush about Alice’s favorite pop singer even though she preferred classical music, and how she’d pretended to love spicy noodles just to match Alice’s taste at lunch. Each memory made her chest feel heavier. “If being myself means being lonely, maybe loneliness is better than feeling like a fake,” she whispered. Suddenly, she sat up—she’d rather have no friends than keep hiding who she was. Tomorrow, she decided, she’d stop trying so hard to please.
The next day, Alice commented on a film, but Nancy didn’t nod. “It was so boring—I fell asleep halfway through,” Alice sighed. Normally, Nancy would’ve agreed, but this time she shook her head. “Actually, I loved the ending! It felt so real,” she said, holding her breath. To her surprise, Alice’s eyes lit up. “Really I thought I was the only one who hated the bad reviews. Let’s talk about it at lunch!” Nancy smiled—for the first time, it felt like a real one.

M: There’s also a cafe at the park to satisfy your hunger!

I was driving on a hot morning to Los Angeles in a brand- new car. I stopped to get fuel. I thought any gas would work, and I picked one. A while later, getting closer to Los Angeles, that’s when the car suddenly died.
I called the rental agency. Ten minutes later, a man named Jackson came with a tow truck and moved me off the road. I told him what was wrong. I felt so depressed, and I started to cry. “Don’t worry. Everything will be fine,” he said. “It’s OK to cry. I sometimes cry.” Then we sat in his truck to wait for the agent from the car-rental company. He gave me some suggestions on driving and cars. It seemed as if the rental company had taken advantage of me by giving me a bad car.
When the agent finally came, I was then driven to the rental office. I was mad about getting a car that didn’t work right and complained to the manager. He offered me another car, but I didn’t want to handle more driving and asked a refund of full amount. The manager agreed gently. Then, as we went to get my stuff from the car, I saw something written on the windshield (挡风玻璃): “Diesel Only.” I Googled diesel and learned that gas shouldn’t be put in a diesel car. I thought: Oh, my God! It was my fault. I felt so stupid.
The manager left me at the train station with my suitcase and three bags, where I asked a policeman what train to take to Los Angeles. He said a bus would be quicker, and then he carried my bags to the stop and told the driver to tell me when to get off, which he did.
On the way to the hotel, I felt a whole chain of people helped me, but I was trapped in thinking everyone had bad intentions. It’s natural to be cautious in the complex world, but I guess I needed to be more open to the kindness of strangers, to see the potential for good in every interaction.
24.Why did the car stop working
A.It was an old car. B.It ran out of gas.
C.Due to the hot weather. D.Owing to the wrong fuel.
25.How did Jackson react to the author’s crying
A.He depressed her. B.He cried with her.
C.He comforted her. D.He complained to her.
26.What did the manager finally do after the author’s complaint
A.He gave her money back. B.He offered a second car.
C.He drove her to the hotel. D.He helped carry her bags.
27.What did the author learn from her experience
A.Trust is hard to build once lost. B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C.Men are born kind and trustworthy. D.Caution and openness need balance.
C
How’s this for a coincidence (巧合) Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were born in the same year, on the same day: Feb. 12, 1809. Although people hardly think of them together, yet we want to say that they belong together. It’s not just because they were both great men, and not because they happen to live at the same time. Rather, it’s because the scientist and the politician each started a revolution that changed the world.
They were both revolutionaries in the sense that both men changed the realities when they were born. They seem and sound modern to us, because the world they left behind them is more or less the one we still live in. So, considering the joint greatness of their contributions and the coincidence of their birthdays ---- it is hard to wonder: who was the greatest man It’s an apples and oranges--- or Superman vs. Santa---comparison. But if you limit the question to influence, very quickly the balance tips in Lincoln’s favor.
As great as his book on evolution is, it does no harm to remember that Darwin hurried to publish The Origin of Species because he thought he was about to be scooped (抢先) by his fellow naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. Lincoln, however, is unique. True, his election as the president did cause the recession (衰退) and the war, but that war seems certain to happen---not a question of if but when. Certainly we know what happened after he was murdered: Reconstruction was organized and then abandoned, leaving the issue of racial (种族的) equality unsolved for another century.
Surely we should not deny Darwin’s accomplishment. But their same birthdays gave us a great opportunity to observe these men of their time.
28. Why does the author say Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln belong together
A. They were born on the same day.
B. They lived in the same period of time.
C. They started revolutions changing the world.
D. They were both great men in the history.
29. What does the author mean by “an apples and oranges---- or Superman vs. Santa --comparison”
A. It is hard to tell which one is greater as they are both outstanding.
B. The comparison between Darwin and Lincoln is easy and obvious.
C. It is difficult to compare them as they are as famous as Superman and Santa.
D. There is no point comparing them because they were born on the same day.
30. Lincoln’s contribution to the world can be best described as__________
A. narrow. B. aggressive.
C. independent. D. ground-breaking.
31. What can we learn from the passage
A. Lincoln’s success in election caused reconstruction.
B. Lincoln had tried to solve the racial problem.
C. Darwin was unique compared with Lincoln.
D. Darwin’s theory is similar to Lincoln’s belief.
D
Social media is taking over our lives: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and now, TikTok. These social media platforms have transformed from a way to stay connected to an industry where even kids can make money off their posts. While this may seem like another opportunistic (机会主义) innovation, it’s really full of hidden false realities.
The median income (中位收入) recorded in the United States of America was about $63,000 in 2018. TikTokers can make anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 for a TikTok brand partnership, and TikTokers with over a million followers can make up to $30,000 a month — $360,000 a year. They are making more than the average person trying to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads, simply by posting a 15-second video.
This is mad in more ways than one. Not only is it an overpaid “job”, it promotes undeserved admiration from viewers and a false sense of reality. Many of these famous TikTokers are still teens, and the effects of fame at such an early stage in life might cause issues later in life, such as mental illness. Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 make up 27% of TikTok viewers, who can be easily influenced by what they are watching. They can put a false sense of self-value into who they look up to and what they represent: money, fame, being considered conventionally attractive.
While TikTok has become a great tool for marketing, it’s important to understand how this content affects young viewers. If we’re constantly consuming content that shows us all we need to do to be successful is be conventionally attractive and post a 15-second video featuring a new dance, it will challenge our knowledge of what really makes someone successful and will in turn affect our individual work ethics (伦理). What about the people who miss birthday and family holidays due to their jobs and aren’t getting paid nearly as much as these TikTokers
Richard Colyer, president and creator of Metaphor, Inc, had his own view on this issue. “It sounds great to make money for doing the latest dance moves in a 15-second video, but we should feed the minds of kids and not just their bank accounts. TikTok can be great if used properly. Money alone is not good, technology alone is not good and connectedness can be bad if it’s only online.”
Again, as a fellow consumer of TikTok, I do enjoy the app when I have some time to kill and need a good laugh. I’ m not against someone making a living on entertainment, but what does getting famous of a 15-second video teach young people
32.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A.Social networking.
B.Making money on social media.
C.A job offered by TikTok.
D.Staying connected to the Internet.
33.What do the numbers given in Paragraph 2 show
A.TikTokers are earning money easily.
B.All TikTokers are richer than average people.
C.Most TikTokers can become millionaires overnight.
D.TikTokers earn much more than ordinary workers.
34.Which is the possible influence of TikTok on its young users
A.They tend to live an adult life too soon.
B.They are forced to pay for certain services.
C.They may abandon other social media.
D.They are likely to develop false value.
35.What can we infer from Richard Colyer’s comments
A.TikTok can be a positive influence if teens employ it wisely.
B.Young TikTokers should be banned from making money.
C.It is better to involve education on investment in TikTok videos.
D.Contents of videos need checking before their release online.

You might think college will be a breeze — studying your favorite courses and hanging out with your friends all day. 36 Creating good habits can help you settle in faster and make the most of college life. Here are some habits you might need to work on.
Manage your time. No more sitting in the classroom from dawn till dusk. You’ll have a unique class timetable and more free time. Parents or teachers won’t be around to help plan your schedule. Spend some time figuring out which study routines and schedules work best for you. 37

Colleges offer many excellent student services, including academic tutoring, mental health counseling (咨询), and career advice. These are great free resources that help you both in the short and long term. 39 This will save you a lot of stress.
Be kind to yourself. There may be expectations for you and others to excel in college. If you don’t meet these expectations, you might feel disappointed. 40 You might experience stress during your first semester if your grades are lower than expected. Once you adjust your expectations and improve your skills, you’ll likely feel more comfortable.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
Nancy stepped into the high school hallway with a pounding heart. It was her first week, and she clutched her notebook tightly, scanning the crowd for familiar faces. Back in middle school, she’d learned that smiling widely and agreeing with everyone kept her from being lonely. “I’ll just do what works,” she thought to herself.
At lunch, she spotted a girl with curly hair sitting alone by the window. “Hi! I’m Nancy. Mind if I join you ” she asked, already pulling out a chair. The girl looked up — Alice, according to the name tag on her desk. “Sure,” Alice said, but her tone was flat.
Nancy spent the next two weeks trying to win Alice over. She saved the last chocolate in her lunch box for her, laughed loudly at her jokes even when she didn’t get them, and copied Alice’s notes word for word, hoping to spark conversations. “Your handwriting is so neat!” she’d say. Alice would just nod and turn back to her book.
