On his tenth birthday, on February 6, 2023, Lzmir Kassam woke to the news of the powerful earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Living in Calgary but named after Turkey’s third-largest city, Lzmir felt a deep connection to the sorrow. Driven by a wish to help, he saw an opportunity to make a difference through his love of running. Two years earlier, Lzmir had run his first half-marathon, collecting money for Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan.
This time he set a new goal: to run ten kilometers ten times, each run marking a year of his life, and to use this challenge to collect money for the people in the earthquake-hit area. Over the course of four months, from last February to June, he ran a total of 62 miles (100 kilometers)-more than two marathons. For his final run, on June 10, the Canadian Turkish Cultural and Islamic Centre helped organise a celebratory event, and Lzmir was joined by his father, his teacher, his classmates and members of the Calgary Turkish community.
In the end, Lzmir’s movement collected more than 10,500 for the people in the earthquake-hit area. “Sometimes I’d feel tired,” Lzmir told CBC Kids News after the last run. “But then I’d think of all these people that I’m helping and I’d keep pushing on.”

5. What encouraged Lzmir Kassam to go on when he felt tired

D The thought of the people he was helping.
6. Which two words can describe Lzmir Kassam best
A. Honest and positive B. Kind and determined
C. Polite and responsible D. Popular and confident
7. What lesson can be learned from Lzmir’s story

B. It is hard for a person to succeed without the help of others
C. It’s easy to raise a large amount of money through running.
D Using one’s strong points is a powerful way to help others

Exercise doesn’t just help you lose fat. It could also promote healthier fat, according to a new study. “Living a physically active lifestyle makes our fat tissue (组织) a more accommodating place for extra energy under conditions when we do gain weight,” said senior study author Dr. Jeffrey Horowitz, professor of movement studies at the University of Michigan.
To see how exercise impacts fat tissue, researchers compared fat tissue just under the skin from two groups of 16 people with obesity: those who reported exercising at least four times a week for at least 2 years, and those who did not exercise regularly. Those who had a history of regular exercise had fat cells which showed characteristics that increase how much fat they can store. It is important that the fat tissue under the skin has a greater capacity (容量) so that if a person does gain weight, the increasing fat can go there instead of more dangerous places, such as the heart or liver, Dr. Jeffrey added. “Unfortunately, most of us, even regular exercisers, gain weight as we get older. If we have a greater capacity to store that in our fat tissue, less of it will go to our liver, our heart, or other places that in excess (过量) can be really problematic.”
This study shows that researchers need to learn more about fat tissue and how it is connected to health and lifestyle changes, said Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver. “Just being overweight may not be the whole story,” he said. “The tissue used to be understood as only functioning to store energy, but researchers are just starting to learn it has many functions,” Freeman said. “It makes sense to have some degree of fat so you have some reserve, but not to the point that the typical American has,” he added
The key finding of the study is that healthier fat storage is just another good reason to live a physically active life. If you want to start, Freeman suggests trying out exercise first thing in the morning.
8. Why did the researchers conduct the study according to the passage
A. To observe how fat issue impacts physical health.
B. To examine the influence of exercise on fat tissue.
C. To understand whether exercise can help us lose weight.
D. To analyse the relationship between fat issue and exercise.
9. What can we learn about the study
A. Regular exercise can help people store less fat and become fit.
B Regular exercisers are more likely to gain weight as they get old.
C. Regular exercise causes increasing fat to go to places like heart or liver.
D. Regular exercisers have a greater capacity to store fat in their fat issues.
10. What may Dr. Andrew Freeman agree with according to the passage
A. A certain amount of fat is harmful to health.
B. Further study is needed on the role of fat tissue.
C. Weight control is the key to living a healthy lifestyle.
D. Fat tissue has long been believed to perform more functions.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. Weight loss: promote a healthy life. B. Fat tissue: consume extra energy.
C. Exercise: help you store fat better. D. Health risks: lead to overweight
D
Little kids are much more likely to remember a thing that is unimaginable to them, a team reports in the journal PNAS.
Feigenson, an expert at Johns Hopkins University and Aimee Stahl of The College of New Jersey did an experiment that included 335 2-and 3-year-olds. “We wanted to know how little kids think about possibilities,” Feigenson says.
Their first challenge was getting the attention of kids that young, so the scientists designed a special machine filled with toys. It turns out that the chance to put a little coin in a machine and get a prize is a drive to kids. When the little kids got a toy from the machine, the scientists told them it had a made-up name: Blick. Later, they were asked to point to the Blick among many toys. When the little kids knew the transparent (透明的) machine held Blicks, they were unsurprised by their prize and usually forgot its name. This was true even when the machine had only one or two Blicks among lots of other toys.
But the little kids behaved very differently when they got a Blick from a machine that appeared to have none, a seemingly impossible thing. “Often, “kids’ eyes get wide, and their mouths open, and they look at their mom in surprise that this has happened,” Feigenson says. Moreover, when little kids met this completely unexpected result, they usually remembered the Blick’s name. They are really driven to learn.
The results further prove that even very young children learn better when they meet the unexpected, says Andrew Shtulman, an expert at Occidental College. “It causes a level of surprise that leads to more attention, better understanding of the things, and better continuous attention of those things later on,” he adds, “If you want children to learn something deeply and for a long time, you go against their expectations before introducing that information.”
12. What does the experiment focus on
A. Little kids’ imagination. B. Little kids’ rememberance.
C. Little kids’ curiosity about learning. D. Little kids’ behaviour to possibilities.
13. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in paragraph 3
A. They had no interest in the result. B. They had no confidence in winning.
C. They had difficulty in concentrating. D. They did well in telling the difference.
14. How did little kids find the machine without Blicks
A. They were amazed. B. They were annoyed.
C. They were satisfied. D. They were frightened.
15. What is Andrew Shtulman’s suggestion on children’s learning
A. Offer information directly. B. Teach them as they expect.
C. Provide more teaching methods. D. Surprise the kids to learn better.
