Host: Welcome to our radio show, Li Lin. I know you did volunteer work during this summer holiday. Can you
briefly tell us about it?
Li Lin: Sure. I volunteered at a local nursing home. I started after the final exams and I enjoyed it.
Host: What did you do there?
Li Lin: I helped the elderly with daily activities like walking, talking, or playing games. Sometimes, I read or
just chatted with them.

Language points
tell意为“告诉；命令；吩咐”，常用短语有：
tell sb about... 告诉某人关于······的情况
tell sb sth＝tell sth to sb 告诉某人某事
tell sb (not) to do sth 叮嘱某人(不要)做某事

2. I helped the elderly with daily activities like walking, talking, or playing games. 我帮助老年人进行日常活动,比如散步、聊天或玩游戏。
（1）daily可作形容词，意为“日常的；每日的”，仅用于名词前作定语，相当于 everyday。

（2）play可作动词，意为“玩；踢(球)；演奏；同······比赛”。play 后接表示乐器的名词时，乐器名词前通常加定冠词 the；play 后接表示球类或棋牌类的名词时，球类、棋牌类名词前不加冠词。

3.make one’s day 让……开心（教材P92）
观察· I gave Mom a bouquet of flowers, and she smiled so happily that it made my day. 我送给妈妈一束花，她笑得合不拢嘴，这让我很高兴。
· That surprise party really made my day wonderful.
那个惊喜派对真的让我的一天变得非常开心。
make one’s day 意为“让……开心”，表示某个具体的事件或行为使某人的一天变得特别愉快。其中one’s要用形容词性物主代词或名词的所有格形式。
可与形容词搭配使用增强表达效果。
4. Sometimes it was hard to communicate with some of the elderly people because of their health problems. 有时由于一些老年人的健康问题，与他们交流会很困难。
communicate是动词，意为“交流；沟通”，其名词形式为 communication，意为“交流；沟通；通信”。
常用短语：
communicate with sb. 与某人交流/沟通
be in communication with sb. 与某人保持联系

5. The workers there taught me how to best support them. 那里的工作人员教会了我如何最好地支持他们。
（1）support既可作动词，又可作名词，意为“支持”。support sb in (doing) sth 表示“在(做)某事上支持某人”。

（2）how to best support them是“疑问词+不定式”结构作宾语。
