The power (电) failed on the night before the science fair. Lucy sat on the cold stairs, staring at her half-finished solar-system model. The nine foam (泡沫) planets were painted, but the tiny bulb that should be the sun would not light. Without electricity, she could not solder (焊接) the loose wires (松散的电线), and tomorrow her project would sit unseen on the back table.
Lucy’s dad was at work and her mom was far away caring for Grandpa. There was no money for a new tool box. She had built everything from old balls, toothpicks, and the last of her birthday paints.
Outside, rain began to tick against the windows like tiny nails (钉子). Lucy sighed (叹气). Suddenly a bright beam (光线) cut through the glass. There stood Alex, her quiet classmate from three doors down. A yellow raincoat covered his head; under his arm was a small tool box.
“Need a hand ” he asked. “I brought my dad’s soldering iron and a power bank.”
Lucy opened the door wide. They worked for an hour, talking about comets (彗星) and basketball and whether Pluto (冥王星) should still count. When the town lights finally returned, the model spun (旋转) gently, lighting their smiling faces.
The next afternoon the judges stopped longest at Lucy’s table. She won second prize: a book on space and a shiny silver sticker. She ran to Alex and pressed the book into his hands.
“We did it,” she said.
Alex shook his head. “You made the planets. I just held the light.”
Lucy smiled. “That’s what friends are for—holding the light when it’s dark.”

Living and dealing with kids can be a difficult job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even more difficult. If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let the other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve munication begins with the concerns(关心)of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and take no notice to anyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing. If you look up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it will say “expressing ideas and feelings or giving people information: a letter or a message”.
To keep a good relationship with your parents, you must keep communication strong. Let them know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, and ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse.
Here is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends.
She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let it munication is the key here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of munication isn’t a one-way matter: it goes both ways.
Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel—listening is the key to communication.
30. What can we learn from the passage ________
A. Writing a letter is the first step of communication.
B. Keeping silent is a good way for you to solve problems.
C. Asking your parents for help is the best way to communicate.
D. Communication helps us build a good relationship with our parents.
31. The underlined words “drift apart” in Paragraph 1 mean ________.
A. are different from others B. get close to each other
C. keep away from others D. become interested in new ideas
32. Paragraph 2 is mainly about ________.
A. how you get along well with your parents
B. when you start to communicate with your parents
C. what good parents should do to deal with problems
D why you should make your parents feel good
33. The writer uses Sophie’s example to show that ________.
A. playing outside late is dangerous
B. communication is the key to problem-solving
C. Sophie should be polite to her parents
D. Sophie’s parents should listen to her explanation
四、阅读短文,回答问题 (第34-36题每小题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
When you think of a creative person you might picture someone painting a picture or writing a poem—but you don’t need to be an artist or poet to be creative. Singing in the shower, inventing a new after-school snack, or even doodling (乱画) in your notebook are all creative acts. And joining in these activities brings many benefits: studies show they can improve your focus, help you relax, and reduce anxiety. What’s more, creativity also has positive effects on your physical health.
For your mood (情绪), creativity is like a magic pill. Painting, drawing, or just looking at art works can lower your cortisol (皮质醇)—the stress hormone (荷尔蒙) that makes you feel anxious. So next time you’re nervous before an exam, try doodling something fun or looking at art online. It will help you calm down.
When it comes to your heart, creativity can be a great helper. It can lower your blood pressure, making it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body. This is especially good for people with heart problems, and even simple creative activities work.
Your brain is another big winner when you get creative. Creativity sharpens your focus and mental flexibility (灵活性), letting you think in different ways and come up with new ideas—useful for tricky math problems or essay brainstorming. It keeps the brain young and stops older adults’ cognitive decline (认知下降).
Last but not least, your nervous system (神经系统) benefits too. Creativity can better its pain-managing ability. If you suffer from chronic (慢性的) pain, studies show that creative activities like writing music or even singing your favorite tunes can help reduce discomfort.
Creativity is for everyone. Try it—you’ll help your body and mind. Give it a try, and you might find a new passion that makes you feel great!
34. What are creative acts

From this experience, I learned that tolerance helps improve relationships. When we understand and forgive each other, we can avoid unnecessary disagreements and become closer friends.
