Like many people over the past few years, I have found myself turning to audiobooks (有声读物) as the main way of reading. I find it far more comfortable to “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting. But a recent study makes me wonder if this will come at the price of my ability to understand.
The study comes from Boaz Keysar and Janet Geipel. It is based on the “dual (双重的) process model”, which means we have two ways of processing information. ★ It is quick, but easier to make mistakes. The second one has something to do with the use of logical reasoning (逻辑推理). When it is used, we think through the material step by step. Experts have designed different tests to decide which of these two ways a person is using. As one example, consider the following question: How many suns did Yu Gong shoot down If you answered nine, perhaps you were only noticing some words of the question, which is the first way of thinking. To get to the right answer: zero, you need to think more carefully about the words of the question. They would allow you to remember it was Hou Yi who shot down the suns, not Yu Gong. That is the kind of logical reasoning process.
Keysar and Geipel’s study was to find out whether seeing or hearing the information would make things different. The result was: When answering these kinds of simple questions, it was more possible for people to make mistakes when the sentences were spoken out loud, rather than written.
It could be a problem if we depend more on our feelings when we are getting information that needs logical reasoning. For this reason, I will return to reading serious books with my eyes rather than my ears. But I won’t stop listening to novels. I am quite happy that my mind can take a break then.
18.What does the writer think of listening to audiobooks
A.It is cheap. B.It is tiring. C.It is relaxing.
19.Which of the following can be put in ★
A.First, you should read the information carefully.
B.The first one depends on natural ability and feeling.
C.They are the key to successful understanding.
20.Processing information by using logical reasoning allows people to ________.
A.think about the information carefully
B.get the information without thinking
C.remember the information at once
21.What does the writer want to tell us
A.Listening to books may prevent your understanding.
B.Reading serious books is good for you.
