Parents often think that their kids should be good at studies and do well in sports. That’s usually the case because parents feel that could get their children admission to top colleges. However, Melissa and Mark Wimmer think differently.
Their 14-year-old son, Mike, is a prodigy. He is a member of Mensa, which is the world’s top IQ club. He completed his high school, associate’s and bachelor’s degrees all in three years. That’s not all. He also ran two tech companies, and founded a third one that works towards controlling the population of lionfish, an invasive (入侵的) species.
But the parents are proud that they were able to help Mike with his social skills along with his intellectual skills. Melissa told CNBC that people expected “Young Sheldon” before they met her son. Young Sheldon is a television show about a child talent who is an indoor man and lacks social skills. “But once they talk to Mike, they understand that he’s just a normal 14-year-old that happens to be able to do amazing things,” said Melissa.
Mark and Melissa got to know about their child’s intelligence when he entered preschool. A child psychologist told them that their son would need a different course to support his fast-track development. Many parents aren’t comfortable with putting their children with 18-year-olds, but Mike’s parents saw the value in letting their child go through it. “I wanted him to be social and be able to deal with all the different personalities in the classrooms with older children,” said Melissa.
The parents shared that they were able to do this by letting Mike find his own voice and put it to use. “We let him order food when he’s 3 or 4 from the waiter or waitress and introduce himself to people. Those kinds of things are done to encourage him to engage with everyone else and be more comfortable talking to others outside of our environment,” said Melissa. Thanks to his parents, Mike has learned to get along with young and old alike.

6.How did Mike’s parents get to know about their son’s remarkable talent
A.From school teachers’comments. B.Through their son’s behavior.
C.From a child psychologist’s advice. D.By letting him study with 18-year-olds.
7.What did Mike’s parents do to improve his social skills
A.They let him run two tech companies.
B.They encouraged him to join in some clubs.
C.They taught him some rules about interaction.
D.They placed him in social situations at early ages.

In a new study published in the British Journal of Health Psychology, researchers from the Universities of Bath and Southampton have revealed how just 10 minutes of daily mindfulness (正念) practice can improve wellbeing, ease depression and anxiety and help people to be more motivated to improve their lifestyle — including healthier exercise, eating and sleeping habits.
The research recruited 1,247 adults from 91 countries and utilized a free mobile app called Medito to deliver brief daily mindfulness sessions. Participants were randomly allocated to either a month-long mindfulness routine or a control group that listened to excerpts (节选) from “Alice in Wonderland”. The mindfulness sessions included relaxation exercises, intention-setting, body scans, breath-focused attention and self-reflection. Surveys conducted before and after the 30-day training period revealed substantial improvements in the mindfulness group:
Reduced Depression by 19.2% more than control group;
Improved Wellbeing by 6.9% more;
Decreased Anxiety by 12.6% more;
Attitudes to Health got more positive by 7.1% over control group;
Behavioural Intentions to look after health increased by 6.5% beyond control group.
These benefits were largely maintained after 30 days. In follow-up surveys one month later(Day 61), the mindfulness group showed long-term improvements in their wellbeing, notably a reduction in depression, more positive attitudes and even better sleep.
This research is among the first to link mindfulness practice to broader lifestyle changes, underscoring its potential for promoting healthier living habits like exercising regularly. Masha Remskar, the lead researcher and an expert in behavior change, emphasized that even short daily mindfulness practice can be a powerful tool for mental health improvement. Dr. Max Western from the University of Bath stressed the potential global impact of a light-touch, affordable mindfulness intervention (介入) on healthy lifestyle behaviors, noting its benefits still lasted after the course ended, indicating that it can help build sustainable habits.
The study was supported by the UKRI Economic and Social Research Council and collaborated with the Medito Foundation, a non-profit promoting mindfulness globally through a free app alternative to subscription based services. Medito paved the way for the “30 Day Challenge”, but had no part in data collection, analysis or publication.
8.What can be inferred about daily mindfulness
A.It can cure depression and anxiety. B.It may lead to sustainable benefits.
C.Its benefits are limited to stress reduction. D.It is especially effective for severe depression.
9.What does the underlined word “underscoring” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Highlighting. B.Ignoring. C.Doubting. D.Transforming.
10.What does the Medito Foundation do in the study
A.Fund the research and collect data. B.Analyse the data and release results.
C.Make profits and monitor the process. D.Facilitate the study and spread mindfulness.
11.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.The Medito App: Promoting Mindfulness Practice
B.Brief Daily Mindfulness: Big Benefits for Wellbeing
C.Mindfulness vs. Control Group: A Comparative Study

Who are your best friends on campus Are they the ones you encountered most often in class Are they your fellows in drama club or debate society Something that has to influence whether people become friends is simple physical proximity. And, in fact, the most lasting friendships are developed between people whose paths cross frequently.
A number of studies have demonstrated the effects of proximity on who become friends. One was conducted at MIT in the 1940s. The incoming students were randomly assigned to 17 ten-unit apartment buildings that were isolated from other residential areas, and few of them knew one another beforehand.
The investigators asked each resident to name the three people in the student housing project with whom they socialized most often. The effect of proximity was striking: two-thirds of those listed as friends lived in the same building as the respondent, even though those in the same building represented only 5 percent of the target residents. More striking still was the pattern of friendships within each building. Even though the physical distance between apartments was quite small — 19 feet between the doorways of neighboring apartments and 89 feet between those at the ends of each hallway — 41 percent of those living in neighboring apartments listed each other as friends, compared with only 10 percent of those living at opposite ends of the hallway.
Proximity leads to friendship because it facilitates chance encounters. If so, then pure physical distance should matter less than functional distance — the influence of an architectural layout to encourage or discourage contact between people. The MIT study shows just how important functional distance is. As the following Figure indicates, the stairs are positioned such that upstairs residents will encounter the occupants of apartments at the turn of the stairs much more often than the occupants of the middle apartments. And in fact, the residents of the two stair-end apartment formed twice as many friendships with their upstairs neighbors as those living in the middle apartments.
Figure of the MIT Study
Thus, it’s functional distance more than physical distance that is decisive. Proximity promotes friendship because it brings people together. Actually, in later studies involving more diverse populations, the largest effects of proximity on friendship formation have been found between people of different races, ages, or social classes.
12.What can be concluded from the MIT study
A.Friends play an important role in one’s daily life.
B.Frequency of encounters decides the living distance.
C.People with shared interests are more likely to befriends.
D.The more often two people meet, the closer their relationship is.
13.What method did the MIT researchers employ in their study
A.Case study. B.Recording analysis.
C.In-lab observation. D.Online questionnaire.
14.Which apartment’s residents in the Figure above may make most friends in the building
A.Apartment 1. B.Apartment 2.
C.Apartment 6. D.Apartment 7.
15.Why did researchers carry out later studies
A.Previous study results are contradictory.
B.Previous study methods lack scientific support.
C.The sample in the previous study is not representative.
D.The data in the previous study are not up-to-date enough.

One year ago, when we were in the fifth grade, a new classmate named Jack joined us. He was often late for class and had a strange smell on him, which made the girls not want to be “neighbours” with him, let alone sit next to him. It is said that once, a naughty boy curiously opened his backpack and many crushed soda cans and empty drink bottles that we usually throw into the trash fell out. Therefore, the boys in our class mocked (嘲笑) him as the “trash king”.
Later, during a class meeting, our teacher, Ms. Zhang, told us about his story of using garbage to make inventions. It turns out that Jack is not an ordinary elementary school student, but a “garbage-inspired inventor” who has won the city invention award. According to Ms. Zhang, most of his inventions were picked up from garbage dumps (堆). During that class meeting, Jack showed us his invention of a“domestic wastewater separation system”.
Afterwards, some of us became deeply interested in these small inventions and started to admire Jack’s way of “picking up trash”. We even joined him in picking up trash on weekends and during holidays. From then on, we no longer called him the “trash king“. Instead, we formed a group of five boys and actively searched for usable materials in various garbage dumps around the city. Under Jack’s guidance, we learned that there are many uses for seemingly useless trash. Once, we stayed at school to process the collected materials. Jack mentioned that he was facing a problem with his latest invention—a small cart for buying vegetables that needed to be lightweight. All other materials were solved except for the wheels. How could we find a suitable material for the wheels We racked our brains (绞尽脑汁) and came up with different ideas, such as using soda cans or taking off the wheels from suitcases. However, Jack reminded us that our group should focus on making inventions from waste rather than causing damage to create them. We were all deep in thought.

46.Sample1:
Good morning, everyone!
Today I am very glad to share my ideas of sportsmanship.
Sportsmanship means fairness, respect, and the spirit of never giving up. It teaches us to face failure bravely, respect opponents, and always play by the rules. To cultivate sportsmanship, we should take part in sports activities actively, learn to cooperate with others, and keep a positive attitude whether we win or lose. By doing so, we can become stronger both physically and mentally, and grow into more responsible and confident people.
That’s all. Thank you for listening!
Sample2:
Good morning, everyone!
Today I am very glad to share my ideas of sportsmanship.
Sportsmanship is not just about winning or losing; it’s about respect, teamwork, and perseverance. It teaches us to face challenges with courage and to support our teammates. To cultivate this spirit, we should practice regularly, learn from failures, and always play fair. By doing so, we not only improve our skills but also build strong character.
Let’s embrace sportsmanship and make it a part of our daily lives!
Thank you!
47. When I got home and drank a bottle of water, I suddenly had an idea. What if we could use bottle caps as wheels for Jack’s vegetable cart It seemed like a simple solution, but it could work if we found enough bottle caps. Excited, I shared my idea with the group the next day. Jack’s eyes lit up with enthusiasm as he realized the potential of this suggestion. We immediately set out to collect as many bottle caps as we could find, scouring not only the garbage dumps but also asking friends and family to save them for us.
Jack indeed adopted my suggestion and fixed a row of bottle caps as wheels on his vegetable cart. It was a moment of triumph for all of us, seeing our collective efforts and creativity come to fruition. The cart rolled smoothly, and we celebrated our success with high-fives and laughter. This experience taught us the power of collaboration, innovation, and looking beyond the surface of things. Inspired by Jack’s ingenuity, our group continued to explore ways to repurpose waste, knowing that small actions could lead to big changes in our community and beyond.
