Whenever it comes to holidays, my mother makes fun of my sister and me about how we “make out like robbers (强盗)”. She is pointing to the fact that we are half Jewish and half Indian, so we receive gifts on both the festivals of lights, Hanukkah and Diwali. Though my mother makes jokes about us, I do not mind getting two sets of gifts!
Hanukkah is celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish month, which is usually sometime in December. On Hanukkah, like most Jewish families, we light some candles and say a prayer (祈祷) each night. We also say a special prayer on the first night. After that, it is a tradition for my sister and me to do “hot and cold” for our hidden Hanukkah gifts. When we walk towards the gift, our parents say “hot” and when we walk farther away, they say “cold”. We each receive one present every night of Hanukkah. Another part I like about this holiday is seeing family members who we do not see often. My aunt usually stays for a few days, and we sometimes visit other relatives.
Diwali is celebrated on the 13th day of the dark fortnight of the month of Ashwin (October/ November). To celebrate Diwali, my family does prayers, in honour of the goddess Lakshmi. Since she is the goddess of wealth and prosperity (繁荣), the prayers include washing silver coins in milk and water. In India, people decorate their houses with lamps, similar to the way you might light up your house for Christmas. My family just place a few candles outside. We also set off firecrackers, which is my favorite part. We often do this activity with friends to add to the excitement.
Both holidays have different histories and stories. We celebrate them in different ways, yet they both have the same meaning. They both translate into Festival of Lights, and they both mean family and presents for me!
4.Why does the author receive gifts on both Hanukkah and Diwali
A.She lives in a wealthy family.
B.She lives in two different countries.
C.Her parents like celebrating their different cultures.
D.Her parents like spending money buying gifts for her.
5.What does the underlined part “hot and cold” in paragraph 2 refer to (指代)
A.A kind of Hanukkah game. B.A secret written on lights.
C.A sort of Hanukkah gift. D.A kind of festival drink.
6.What do Hanukkah and Diwali have in common
A.They share the same history.
B.They are both celebrated in December.
C.They get the families to do their prayers.
D.They are both connected to the birth of lights.
7.What is the author’s attitude towards Hanukkah and Diwali
A.Unclear. B.Positive. C.Worried. D.Disappointed.

It would be nice if eating a particular food could magically protect you against all the boring illnesses. It’s not that simple, of course. Hand washing remains your best defense against picking up illnesses, and sleep is a strong defense too. But what you eat does play an important part. Though it isn’t because of just one or two foods, what you eat in your daily diet have an effect on how weak or strong your immunity(免疫力)is.
We’d better eat fruits and vegetables every day. They contain key vitamins needed in the immune system. For example, Vitamin C and Ain foods help immune system work well to keep us healthy. Remember that eating the actual fruit or veggie is better than eating single-vitamin supplements(补品).
Getting too little protein(蛋白质) can weaken your immune system. Protein-rich foods supply the amino acids(氨基酸)you need to build important proteins in the body. Animal foods like beef and pork also contain zinc(锌), which your body uses to make t-cells.
Fermented foods are foods that are naturally protected by bacteria(细菌), and they’re good for the micro biome(微生物).That’s the name for the bacteria that live in your stomach, where a lot of cells in immunity actually live. Fermented foods like yogurt help beneficial bacteria develop fast in the stomach, leaving less room for harmful bacteria.
8.What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us
A.Hand washing is necessary. B.Illnesses make people bored.
C.Immunity has much to do with your diet. D.More sleep does good to health.
9.Why does the writer suggest we eat fruits and vegetables every day
A.They are rich in vitamins we need.
B.Vitamin A is helpful for immunity.
C.Fruits supply our body with Vitamin C only.
D.Eating single-vitamin foods does little good.
10.What can we infer from paragraph 3
A.Amino acids can help to make t-cells.
B.Healthy body needs plenty of protein.
C.The immune system can be hurt easily.
D.We should eat animal foods as many as possible.
11.What is the main idea of the text
A.Different foods have different uses.
B.Fruits and vegetables keep us healthy.
C.Many illnesses do harm to the immunity.
D.Proper daily diet protects our immune system.

It’s cold and dark outside, and your bed is so warm and comfortable. Going for a run seems like such a bad idea. But before you hide your running shoes, it might be worth giving that crazy idea a go.
According to The Huffington Post, an outdoor run in winter, as opposed to one on a treadmill (跑步机), burns more calories because the body is working hard to regulate (调节) its core temperature. Furthermore, research shows that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures—and quicker runs burn more calories. Similarly, cold weather also makes the heart work harder to distribute blood through the body, making that vital muscle even stronger.
Outdoor exercise also turns up your energy and rids you of the stress and depression that build up every day. The heat and humidity in the summer can drag you down and tire you faster, but cold weather is refreshing. It adjusts you to your surroundings, making you feel alive.
Of course, the threat of smog in some built-up areas is a further hurdle to winter exercise. Heart attacks, stroke, lung cancer and asthma are all dangers of running in smog. The combination of air pollution and exercise increases the potential problems. If you do choose to run outside on smoggy days, take a path in a park or residential area to avoid car exhaust (尾气), and go early in the morning, before rush hour. But staying inside on smoggy days and waiting for the next clear day to run is best.
12.How does cold weather benefit runners, compared with warm weather
A.They can run more slowly.
B.They can take in more calories.
C.Their hearts can function harder.
D.Their body temperature can get lower.
13.How does summer affect runners
A.It builds up their energy quickly. B.It makes runners tired easily.
C.It lessens runners’ stress. D.It causes heart attack.
14.What are the runners supposed to do on smoggy days
A.Stop driving cars. B.Do more exercise.
C.Avoid outdoor exercise. D.Run late in the morning.
15.What can be the best title of the text
A.Refresh with a Winter Run B.Take Outdoor Exercise in Summer
C.Go to Run in a Park D.Follow the Tips to Reduce Stress

I faced a tight budget when I was nine. On November Ist, I used up most of the money I saved. With a small amount of pocket money left before Christmas I didn’t have enough to buy presents for the family.
I was seriously considering going to my dad and asking for an advance on the next year’s pocket money, so I could at least buy gifts for my family members. But then, one evening, I was sitting in my room reading advertisements in the back of a magazine. Several greeting-card companies were telling us how people could make money by selling their cards and stationery (文具). Normally, I would have passed right over the ads, but this time my situation was so difficult that I felt I had nothing to lose.
The ad that attracted me most was one by a well-known greeting-card company in my nation, whose products were of high quality. With my parents’ help, I contacted the company, although they preferred adults or older kids to advertise their products. After my sincere request, they agreed to give me, a nine-year-old boy, a chance.
My sales materials arrived within the week. I had expected something small and neat, but the package looked like a dinosaur’s shoebox it was close to three feet long and nearly a foot wide, full of stuff. There was a thick binder (活页夹) containing a complete selection of the cards and some writing paper, which I would be selling for around $3 per box.
Although my parents supported my try to make money by myself, they had little confidence in my success; after all, instead of an outgoing kid, I was somewhat shy. However, I was determined to have a try to challenge myself.

You have told me that you are very nervous about the coming speech contest and I will try to make some suggestions which I hope can help you. In my opinion, you should get well prepared before the speech contest by practicing before a mirror.

When you are giving the speech, remember to keep smile and even if you forget your words, don't be panic and just continue your speech, because no one will notice it.Wish you success in the speech.

47. Wasting no time, I set off and knocked on doors in my neighborhood. Gathering my courage, I introduced myself as the young representative of the well-known greeting-card company. The initial responses were mixed — some were hesitant, while others were fascinated by the idea of a child engaged in such a venture. As I showcased the high-quality cards and shared the story behind each design, the doubt began to fade away, replaced by genuine interest. Surprisingly, my shy character transformed into enthusiasm, and I found myself engaging in conversations that extended beyond the purpose of sales.
Eventually, I earned over $20, a large sum of money for a 9-year-old kid in 1954. The community’s response exceeded my expectations, and the support I received went beyond mere financial transactions. Neighbors were not just buying cards; they were encouraging a young entrepreneur. This unexpected journey into sales not only alleviated my financial concerns for Christmas but also instilled a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence. It broadened my horizons and laid the foundation for a newfound belief in the possibilities that determination and courage could unfold, regardless of age.
