Our ship sailed on the sea into the Earth’s night. Here, there was no visible light from the Sun or the Earth Engines. But as we looked up, we children saw the starry sky for the first time in our lives. How breathtakingly beautiful it was!
Ms Xing put an arm around us while pointing at the sky with her other hand. “Look, children! That is Proxima Centauri (比邻星), our new home!” With these words, tears ran slowly down her face. Before long, we were all in tears—even the captain and crew. We all looked in the direction that Ms Xing was pointing. There was only one point of light among the twinkling stars that shined constantly: Proxima Centauri—the only source of hope and comfort for a hundred future generations. “Whatever risks we might take, we will finally make it there!” said the captain, in an assured voice.
On our way back from the sea, we saw the first sign that Earth had begun its journey. In the night sky, a huge comet had appeared. It was the Moon, abandoned by humankind. Lunar Engines had been installed to the Moon to force it out of its orbit so that a disastrous crash could be avoided as the Earth sped up and moved away. As it progressed, the gravitational tide of the Moon caused the ocean to swell, creating gigantic waves. We quickly got off the ship to our destination in the Southern Hemisphere. The next few days were the countdown to our departure.
Finally came the big day! As Earth Engines was set at a full power, we got immediately blinded by the bright light from it. This acceleration created massive tsunamis hundreds of meters high that crashed onto the coasts of every continent. Burning hot hurricanes roared through the boiling waves, screaming with wild fury and pulling up almost every tree on Earth.
Our Earth, with its blue tail cutting through the darkness of space, had set out on its long journey, and with it went all of humankind.

6.Which of the following words can best describe the journey

The chaos of travel through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) calms down when you walk into the Orchestrina. At the start of a 1,000-foot-long hallway connecting Tom Bradley International Terminal’s (航站楼) Great Hall to its west gates, the light softens to blue. What amazes passengers is the gentle waves of music that greet them as they are carried through the terminal by the moving sidewalk. Along the way, the music shifts between 30 compositions from well-known artists.
The Orchestrina, a piece of public art equipment from L.A.radio and Dublab, is part of a new three-year contract for the station to program live music and sound art at LAX. It’s an introduction to L.A.’s experimental music and art scenes. As passengers are on edge over the many things going wrong in the skies these days, the Orchestria offers an experience of tasteful, mental peace.
“That’s absolutely the intention, to offer, like, a break from the fast-paced urban schedule,” said Cohen, executive director of Dublab, “There’s a really interesting effect when you enter the hallway, coming down this long set of stairs and entering this blue light that completely surrounds you with music and field recordings where you can hear birds and wind passing through grass.” There are many events planned for the three years to come, as Dublab tries to make one of the most awful locations in the county somewhere you might intend staying longer and listening.
“We desire to reflect our city, and I think we’ve got to bake the arts programming in as part of that. At the end of the day, we’re all just human beings using these public spaces.” explained Sarah Cifarelli, LAX Art Program Director. “That’s part of the point, though — to show off the city for anyone looking closely and make it gentler for anyone passing through. These are the things that you kind of live for, you work for, being part of the heartbeat of the city,” Cohen said, “It’s another step towards being integrated into the city whether intentionally or not.”
8.What impresses the passengers when they walk into the Orchestrina
A.The long hallway. B.The blue light.
C.The moving sidewalk. D.The relaxing music.
9.What will Dublab’s three-year project bring according to Cohen
A.A refreshing interaction with nature. B.A momentary escape from busy routine.
C.The increase in LAX’s commercial value. D.The promotion of local artists and their music.
10.What is the arts programming aimed at
A.Making full use of public spaces. B.Prioritizing showing off the city.
C.Being mixed into the city’s identity. D.Speeding up the city’s development.
11.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.Dublab’s Music: a Relief from Stress B.Exploring LAX: Finding Peace in Light
C.LAX’s New Art Program: Peace in Chaos D.Orchestrina: a High-tech Design in the City
D
We’ve all experienced that moment when a word feels just out of reach, as if it’s “on the tip of the tongue.” This frustrating phenomenon, called the tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) state, was traditionally thought to occur when our brains partially remember an answer. However, new studies challenge this idea, suggesting the TOT feeling might be more of a false mental impression than true memory recall. Simply believing you know something doesn’t guarantee you actually do.
To explore this, researchers asked college students to answer 80 general-knowledge questions, each requiring a single-word response. If they couldn’t answer correctly, they were asked whether they felt the answer was on the tip of their tongue. They then guessed details like the word’s first letter, number of syllables, or sound. The results showed participants in TOT states were far more likely to offer partial information — five times more frequently in one experiment.
However, the partial information was mostly inaccurate. For example, guesses about sounds or syllables were no more correct during TOT states than at other times. First-letter guesses matched the answer only slightly more often (about 11% vs. 8% in non-TOT states). Surprisingly, participants trusted their guesses 58% of the time during TOT states, compared to just 7% otherwise. This suggests the TOT feeling creates false confidence in partial information.
Earlier research revealed the TOT feeling isn’t entirely false impression — participants score better on general-knowledge tests following such state (55% vs. 42%), but recent findings caution against complete trust in this. The study suggests this mental state may not result from partial information, but rather the opposite mechanism: The feeling itself could trigger (触发) memory-searching efforts. Anne Cleary, the study’s lead psychologist, explains, “People might sense familiarity with the question itself. This feeling acts like a signal, telling the brain to dig deeper into stored knowledge.”
The new findings on the TOT phenomenon have sparked extensive academic discussion, with scholars emphasizing their profound implications. These insights challenge existing memory models and urge a reevaluation of assessment methods in education and clinical settings, potentially reshaping future research directions.
12.What does the new studies reveal about the TOT feeling
A.It results from partial memory. B.It guarantees accurate answers.
C.It might be a misleading impression. D.It reflects complete memory process.
13.What did students do in the experiments
A.Guessing answers based on syllables.
B.Describing words’ meanings in detail.
C.Answering 80 multiple-choice questions.
D.Providing one-word answers to questions.
14.What can be learned from the recent findings
A.Recall success triggers TOT, causing confusion.
B.TOT follows memory failure, creating frustration.
C.Familiarity triggers memory search, leading to TOT.
D.Partial memories activate TOT, bringing familiarity.
15.Which of the following best describe the impact of the new findings
A.Far-reaching. B.Predictable.
C.Narrow-focused. D.Unidentifiable.

One evening in 2021, Li Ruoxi, 22, was scrolling through short videos to seek inspiration for her art designs. Suddenly, a song in an unfamiliar language played through her headphones. Eric, my husband, and I are enthusiastic hikers. We are attracted by the challenge and beauty of mountain trails (小路), especially those that lead to sites of historical and cultural significance. Our love for hiking began shortly after we were married, and it has been a passion of ours for many years.
Last month, we visited a national park with the intention of hiking to a location known for its stone text. After many difficulties, we found only one site within the park was open to visitors. To enjoy the stone text in the mountains, we needed to finish a 2.5-mile path, which started from the museum of the park. 2.5 miles didn’t sound like a very long hike. We were both just in our seventies but fairly fit, and we thought we could easily do 2.5 miles. However, the worker in the museum warned us that the first mile of the path was steep (陡峭的) and rocky and that it could be very challenging. But we ignored her warning and made up our minds to go.
“2.5 miles is not a big deal. Surely, we could do it if we wear proper boots and start early tomorrow morning,” I whispered to my husband lightheartedly.
The next morning, my husband and I got up early. Before starting our hike, we first reached a place that served breakfast. There, we found a family of three, a young man named Walter, his wife and sister. They would also take the path to watch the stone text. They were warm and friendly and we chatted happily for a while. Before they set off, Walter said that he would see us at the stairs, and we thought no more about it. Twenty minutes later, we also started hiking.
The trail started well and it was pretty much downhill all the way. Then it became more and more challenging. The path became extremely steep and was blocked here and there by huge slippery (湿滑的) rocks, which made each step forward an adventure.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As we pushed on, the hike became even tougher.

46.Dear Jim,
It’s great to hear from you. I feel proud knowing your interest in Chinese history.
As for my favorite figure in Chinese history, it must be Wei Yuan, a great thinker in the late Qing Dynasty. He, in his book, Haiguo Tuzhi (Maps and Records of the World), introduced modern technologies and ideas to China, which opened our eyes to the world. So he and his works are still worthy of being respected by us now. In fact, he inspires me to major in English in college, to be a bridge between China and the world.
Interested in knowing more I can find you some books! Just let me know.
Yours,
Li Hua

As we pushed on, the hike became even tougher. The steep portions seemed endless, and each step required every ounce of our strength and concentration. Sweat trickled down our faces, and our legs felt like jelly. We paused frequently to catch our breath and steady ourselves on the uneven ground. In front of us, the jagged rocks and steep inclines tested our limits. Determined to reach the stone text, Eric and I encouraged each other, inching forward slowly but surely.
When Walter saw us, he rushed to help us. Seeing our struggle, he offered his hand to Eric and supported him over a particularly tricky section. “Take it slow, we’ve got this,” Walter smiled reassuringly. With his assistance, we navigated the final stretch of the challenging path. Finally, we stood before the magnificent stone text, filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. The view was breathtaking, and the hike, though arduous, was undoubtedly worth every step.
