Kristina Smithe was running the California International Marathon in 2019, grabbing cups of
water to drink, when she started to think about how much waste such events produce. On the flight
home, she did the math: 9,000 ninners, 17 aid stations and something like 150,000 cups used once and
thrown away. That sparked her idea for something more environmental—a lightweight cup that could
be used again and again. After working out a design, Kristina ordered her first shipment and tested
them at a race in 2021.
As she was getting her business off the ground, Kristina emailed race directors to ask if their event
used disposable (—次性的)cups. ‘The answer was always yes,” she said. Her response, ‘I f you’re
looking for a sustainable solution, I have one.'5 Now she rents out the cups by the thousand, driving
titiem to events in big bags and leaving bins (箱子 ) with the company logo for collection after use.
Kristina picks up the used cups and washes them in a specialized dishwasher.
“It’s just a solution to a problem that has been around for a long time,” Kristina said. Nevertheless,
one trade-off is that the cup rentals cost race directors more than other options. Disposable cups might
run just a few cents each, while 10.000 reusable cups would rent for about 15 cents each.
Gleeson, of Project Drawdown, sees the reusable cups as just one of many ways that innovators
无锡市2025年秋学期高三期中教学质量调研测试英语试卷答案听力原文2025.11.05
(创新者 ) are looking to cut down on plastic waste. Such solutions often have to be rooted in
convenience and grounded in local applications to get more people to adopt them. Some cities, for
instance, are experimenting with reusable food takeout containers that customers return to nearby drop
off spots later on.
While no one solution can fully tackle the problem, <4The potential is there,5, Gleeson said. Lil think
in general, high adoption of these kinds of solutions is what is able to bring costs down and really
maximize environmental benefits that you could get.11
24. What inspired Kristina to design reusable cups
A. The suggestion from marathon race directors.
B. Her own experience in reducing plastic waste.
C. High price paid by marathon nmners for cups.
D. The huge number of cups wasted in a marathon.
25. What is the main challenge of Kristina's reusable cups
A. High rental cost B. Poor user experience.
C. Unsatisfying quality. D. Complex washing process.
26. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A. Reusable cups are sufficient to reduce plastic waste.
B. Innovators should attach importance to reducing costs.
C. Solutions should fit local use and be convenient for adopters.
D. Cities have made great progress in reducing plastic waste.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing this article
A. To describe the ways of producing reusable cups.
B. To compare the costs of single-use and reusable cups.
C. To criticize race events for causing environmental damage.
D. To report a rental-cup plan for reducing plastic waste in races.

Scientists are advancing forward in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology, and a newly
developed system can translate our thoughts into text or sound.
It’s essentially an inner speech decoder(^码器) , developed by researchers from institutions across
the US. in tests on four volunteers with severe disabilities, the decoder has an accuracy rate of up to 74
percent in translating thoughts into audible (听得见的)speech. The potential here is for a BCI that can
help those with speech disabilities to communicate more effectively than ever before.
Previous BCIs have relied on brain activity that is created when a person ties to speak or write,
even though their bodies cannot carry out the action. This new technology gets a step closer to the
source. 4and faster for people/5 says neuroscientist Benyamin Meschede-Krasa, from Stanford University in the
US.
Machine learning was used to train the BCI to connect brain signals to words as the four
participants thought about them. The researchers found that there was overlap between certain brain
patterns when the volunteers tried to speak and when they only imagined words and phrases. Despite
this, the signals could be distinguished from each other. With some probability calculations thrown in.
the new BCI can recognize up to 125,000 words using only inner speech. t4We found that we could
decode these signals well enough to demonstrate a proof of principle, although still not as well as we
could with attempted speech,” says neuroscientist Frank Willett from Stanford University.
无锡市2025年秋学期高三期中教学质量调研测试英语试卷答案听力原文2025.11.05
There^s still a long way to go there, and the BCI often falls far short of that 74 maximum accuracy
rating. However, by employing more advanced technology, the researchers are confident that the
system can be quickly improved over the next few years, cThis work gives real hope that speech BCIs
can one day restore communication that is as fluent, natural and comfortable as conversational qjeech/’
say Willett.
28. How does the new BCI system differ from previous ones
A. It helps healthy people communicate fluently.
B. It doesn^t require the user to try to speak or write.
C. It uses a more advanced machine learning model.
D. It can identify more words with higher accuracy.
29. What does the underlined word t4overlap , in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Gap. B. Conflict C. Balance. D. Similarity.
30. What is the main problem with the new BCI
C. Accuracy. D. Convenience.
A. A breakthrough in decoding inner speech.
B. The working principle of a new BCI system.
C. Differences between a new BCI and previous ones.
D. Challenges for people with severe speech disabilities.
Under the baking sun, Xu Xiaolong and his colleagues walked through wild grass in the Gobi
Desert, scanning the rocky foothills of Helan Mountain in Yinchuan, Northwest China^ Ningxa Hui
autonomous region, in search of ancient carvings. Upon finding a pattern on a rock, the team
immediately photographed and recorded its location.
44This field survey not only assesses the preservation status of previously discovered rock carvings
but also helps identify and record new ones,M says Xu, 36, who works with the city's Helan Mountain
rock art administration. He explains that the work lays the foundation for subsequent (随后的)
protection efforts.
Stretching 250 kilometers, Helan Mountain is home to more than 20,000 ancient rock carvings
created by early residents with stones or metal tools. Dating back approximately 10,000 to 3,000 years
the carvings describe diverse subjects ranging from natural images like human faces, animals and
handprints, to ancient life scenes like hunting and herding
Launched in 2020, the administration has surveyed over 12 square kilometers in and around the
Helan Mountain rock art ruins park, Among the carvings, one is characterized by two handprints~one
large and the other small, “The handprints likely symbolize *me* and ‘you’, carved into the rock to
reach an agreement,n says Zhang Jianguo, deputy director of the administration. He adds that attaching
a handprint to documents like contracts was a traditional practice in China, and this rock carving
reflects that lasting cultural continuity.
Within the parl^ the deepest carving reaches 1.5 centimeters, a depth that has survived many years
of weathering. Through an experiment, the administration found that even three people carving
throughout an entire day left only unclear marks, indicating that a single work likely took multiple
generations of prehistoric people to complete.
Despite their historic significance, the rock carvings face typical preservation challenges like
无锡市2025年秋学期高三期中教学质量调研测试英语试卷答案听力原文2025.11.05
weathering and rainwater. Throughout the entire conservation journey, concrete efforts including field
surveys., the constnictiorL of flood-prevention dams and protective fencing have been made by workers
from the Helan Mountain rock art administration.
32. Why do the researchers study rock carvings in Helaa Mountain
A. To show prehistoric carving skills.
B. To reveal ancient local life and culture.
C. To help restore a ruined rock art park.
D. To attract tourists to Helan Mountain.
33. What do the two handprints in paragraph 4 probably represent
A. A mark pointing to Helan MountaiiL
B. A record of an ancient hunting activity.
C. A conventional way of signing a contract.
D. A gesture indicating family relationship.
34. What can we learn about the rock carving in paragraph. 5
A. It was a long-tenn project
B. It was created in good weather.
C. It was completed within limited time.
D. It was discovered in an experiment
35. What is a suitable title for the text
A. A race against time to rescue rock carvings.
B. Advanced techniques to protect rock carvings.
C. A living museum of culture in Helan Mountain.
D. A symbolic handprint carving in ancient China.

Recently, a cafe in New York aiming to help those who take on writing as a profession has drawn
public attention. The cafe has some normal features like high-speed Wi-Fi. It also provides unlimited
self-service coffee and tea> Where the cafe really differs is through social pressure and expectations to
help writers focus on their work. The cafe makes money by charging 50 dollars for the first hour and 70
dollars per hour after that.
When customers enter the cafe, they are expected to put down their writing goals on paper along
with the time they will finish. They can also choose to have their progress checked on in various ways.
Choosing mild means the cafe staff will ask about their progress when they leave. Oioosing normal
means the staff will check on them every boui. The strongest option, hard, has a staff member stand
behind the customer as they work.
