Shortly before the Spring Festival in 2025, residents of Zhaoquan Village in Shuangkou Town, Beichen District, Tianjin, received daily necessities such as rice, flour, and cooking oil. These supplies were a result of the village’s collective economic growth over the past year, and behind this progress was the dedicated work of the village Party branch, led by 30-year-old Secretary Zhao Rui.
After graduating from Tianjin Medical University in 2017, Zhao returned to her hometown in Shuangkou Town and joined a group of young leaders driving rural revitalization (振兴) in the area. “I grew up in the countryside; this land is my root. I want to help it move toward a brighter future,” Zhao said. In 2021, her outstanding abilities earned her the positions of Party Secretary and Director of the Zhaoquan Village Committee. Today, the village Party branch has nine members, four of whom are under 30. This young team has brought fresh and innovative ideas to promote the village’s prosperity.
In May 2024, with support from the district government, Zhao and her colleagues launched video accounts on popular social media platforms like Douyin and Kuaishou, aiming to explore new ways to increase income and advance the village’s development. One of her video series, titled “100 Simple Acts for the Villagers,” showed her efforts to address the community’s daily needs— including providing free haircuts, giving disease prevention lectures, and teaching elderly villagers to use smartphones. Many young villagers have moved to cities for work, leaving mostly seniors behind, but now these elders can make video calls to their families.
These videos not only enriched villagers’ lives but also put Zhaoquan Village on the map, attracting investment. For example, a forest farm was built where families can enjoy outdoor activities, boosting the village’s income and creating jobs. In September last year, Zhao made videos documenting grape cultivation and highlighting the fruit’s sweet-sour taste, helping sell about 35,000 kg of grapes for local farmers. Zhao has also extended her efforts to neighbouring areas. In June, she also helped a nearby family sell unsold apricots via videos when the family’s mother was bedridden. Additionally, Zhao’s team has tried livestream e-commerce to support the village. “I’m just an ordinary person from a farming family. Though my influence is limited, I want to use my efforts to bring real benefits to my hometown,” Zhao said.
4. What is the main function of the first paragraph in the whole passage
A. To introduce Tianjin’s rural revitalization background.
B. To list daily necessities received by Zhaoquan villagers.
C. To show Zhao Rui’s work results and arouse interest in her story.

A. It was the first social media project Zhao started with her young team.
B. It was launched in 2021 right after Zhao took office as Party Secretary.
C. It included activities related to both daily life support and basic health guidance.
D. It was created to help elderly villagers contact their urban family members.
6. What can be inferred about Zhao Rui’s video efforts
A. They made Zhaoquan a famous tourist spot.
B. They helped nearby areas besides Zhaoquan.
C. They created more long-term jobs than short-term support.
D. They made livestream e-commerce the village’s main income.
7. Which best describes Zhao Rui’s character
A. Practical but hesitant. B. Kind and hardworking.

Approximately a decade ago, a colleague, Geoffrey, and I coincidentally scheduled morning appointments with our respective dentists. When he energetically ran into my office around lunchtime, he revealed and flashed his pearly white teeth and a bright smile, announcing: his dentist produced a 3D-printed false tooth instantly on the spot in the clinic.
That experience signaled to me that the true potential of this technology lay in producing designed components for individual human bodies. And not being the type to spend thousands of dollars on a large device without apparent practical and household utility, I dismissed 3D printing from my thoughts. However, that changed until Jill Patton, a senior editor, started raising the subject repeatedly, who pointed out the fascinating 3D printing research underway at Stanford. And her persistence fueled my interest and encouraged me to explore further.
There are some articles that lend themselves to storytelling — for instance, Profiles like our feature on an art historian or our article on cultural critic, and some reflective essays, such as the reflection on brotherhood or on the drive down Memory Lane also fit the category, while other topics are more challenging to shape into engaging stories. Initially, 3D printing sounded like just another technical subject. Yet, under the guidance of Jill and senior writer Sam Scott, it evolved into a compelling narrative story. Yet through broad and in-depth conversation, Jill and Sam came to focus on four promising applications: microneedles that deliver vaccines or collect extract testing sample fluid for lab tests through the skin, miniature robots that concentrate blood clots (凝块,凝结) for safer removal, structures that aid the reconstruction of severe and complex bone breaks, and an extremely challenging task to 3D print a functional human heart within an hour, before the tissue starts to worsen.
Once our story took shape, the next challenge was how to present and convey it effectively. Illustrating this story is a creative process, which began with dynamic discussions involving the creative director Erin Sonnenschein, the art director Giorgia Virgili, Jill, Sam, and me. Creative director Erin was fascinated by the one-hour heart printing concept, art director Giorgia drew inspiration from the Tin Woodman (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz《绿野仙踪》, by L. Frank Baum), and freelance illustrator Nathan Smith brought the cover to life and added whimsical (奇思妙想的) elements. My personal favorite is a sign “Currently printing: horse jaw,” while Jill appreciated the Tin Woodman perusing essential oils (精油).
All these developments make that early 3D-printed crown seem almost elementary by comparison.
8. What made the author aware of the potential of 3D printing in medical applications
A. A colleague’s experience with a 3D-printed tooth.
B. Research conducted at Stanford University.
C. Articles written by cultural critics.
D. The popularity of 3D printing in schools.
9. Why did the author initially lose interest in 3D printing
A. It was only used for making plastic objects in schools.
B. It seemed too expensive and impractical for personal use.
C. He thought it was merely a tool for storytelling.
D. He was discouraged by his colleague’s negative opinion.
10. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a promising medical application of 3D printing in the text
A. Delivering vaccines through microneedles.
B. Printing a functional heart within an hour.
C. Creating artificial bones for complex fractures.
D. Producing custom-made dental structures quickly.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The History of 3D Printing: From Toys to Medicine.
B. Printing a Smile: How a Tooth Changed Dental Care.
C. The Evolution of 3D Printing: From a Printed Tooth to Medical Miracles.
D. Stanford’s Role in Advancing 3D Printing Technology.

Maria Branyas Morera, the world’s oldest person, passing away at 117 last year, has become a subject of profound scientific interest and may hold clues to longevity in her genes. Before her death, she permitted doctors to gather samples of her blood and other bodily substances to shed light on her biology and long life. A team led by Dr. Manel Esteller at the University of Barcelona analyzed these to understand the biology supporting her longevity, saying “We anticipate to learn from her particular case to benefit others”.
Esteller’s team compared Branyas’ genetic profile with that of other women from the region. The findings published in the journal Cell Reports Medicine on September 24 suggest her extended lifespan stemmed from a combination of genetic advantages and modifiable lifestyle elements. Branyas maintained habits associated with health: avoiding smoking and alcohol, engaging in regular physical activity, and fostering an active social life. Genetically, she possessed gene variants linked with longevity, which contribute to protecting against heart disease and diabetes. And all certainly guaranteed that her cells appeared younger than her biological age.
Her inner microbiome (微生物菌群) also resembled that of a younger person, the study found. High levels of Bifidobacterium (双歧杆菌), beneficial bacteria possibly boosted by her daily consumption of three servings of yogurt, likely guarded her against inflammation. “The findings show that a dietary intervention can be associated not only with disease prevention, but also with prolonged life,” Esteller explains. Still, eating three yogurts a day will not necessarily make for a long life. Other researchers caution that the results of a study of one person can’t be extended to entire populations. To prove Branyas’ long life, the researchers would have had to show that other members of her family also had long lives.
Mary Armanios, an oncologist and geneticist, is also skeptical, reported the New York Times. “The genetics of longevity are extremely confusing,” she says. It’s hard to predict how long someone will live — when researchers compared the genes of centenarians with those of younger people. She also points out that other factors, like socioeconomic status, can affect how long someone lives, even if they have a good genetic profile. “I do think there are obviously bad genetics that limit life span,” she adds. “But I am not sure good genetics are sufficient to overcome socioeconomic limitations.”
Esteller, for his part, hopes to use the information gathered from the study to develop medications that can help older people stay healthy. “We can develop drugs to reproduce the effects of good genes,” he explains to the Guardian. “Maria’s parents gave her very good genes, but we cannot choose our parents.”
12. What can be inferred from Dr. Esteller’s study of Maria Branyas Morera
A. Her lifestyle alone was the main reason for her long life.
B. Genetics and daily habits both played roles in her longevity.
C. She avoided diseases solely because of her social activities.
D. Her case can be directly applied to enhance everyone’s lifespan.
13. What is the primary caution raised by other researchers regarding the study’s findings
A. Yogurt consumption may cause obesity if overeaten.
B. Branyas’ family members declined to participate in the investigation.
C. The conclusions can not be necessarily applicable to the broader population.
D. Dietary interventions are superior to medical treatments.
14. Why does Mary Armanios express skepticism about the study’s result
A. She believes genetics are the only factor in determining lifespan.
B. She thinks good genes can easily overcome social and economic disadvantages.
C. She argues that longevity studies should ignore younger people entirely.
D. She suggests that factors like socioeconomic status also affect how long people live.
15. What is Dr. Esteller’s attitude towards the potential of his research findings
A. He is dominantly skeptical about any practical applications.
B. He holds a curative optimism, aiming to translate findings into treatments.
C. He believes the findings merely confirm the irrelevance of lifestyle.
D. He is primarily concerned with addressing socioeconomic limitations.

Senior year’s final week came, and Emma had long anticipated the school’s annual Rocky Mountains hiking trip. The range’s majestic peaks, lush forests, and crystal-clear streams fascinated her. As a keen hiker who explored local trails every weekend, she dreamed of winning the “Best Explorer” award — given to the student who found the most unique natural spot— and was determined to stand out with an extraordinary discovery.
Three days into the trip, while exploring a secluded trail that was barely marked on the map, Emma ventured off the beaten path. She pushed through dense underbrush and climbed over moss-covered rocks, her curiosity leading her deeper into the wilderness. Eventually, she found a mysterious old journal buried under a pile of decaying leaves. Dusting it off, she saw the cover was worn, but the name “Clara” was still visible. As she flipped through the pages, she learned that Clara had visited the area fifty years ago. Clara’s entries were full of vivid descriptions of the mountains, and most excitingly, she wrote about a “hidden waterfall of rainbow mist” that appeared when the sun hit the spray just right. No one had been able to find it since Clara’s time, and Emma’s heart raced with excitement — this could be her chance to win the award
But on the fourth day, a sudden storm struck. Dark clouds gathered, heavy rain turned trails to mud, and a flash flood separated Emma from the group. Her calls were drowned by wind and rain, and her phone died, leaving her on an unfamiliar path, fearful yet determined. The only guide was the slightly damp journal. She pulled it out and reread, “To find the rainbow waterfall, follow the path where the three pines stand as one’.” With no other options, Emma set off, hoping Clara’s words would lead her to the waterfall and safety.

C. Ambitious yet dependent. D. Innovative and devoted.

【答案】例文
Paragraph 1
Emma struggled to stay calm as she tried to decipher Clara’s clue. She wandered through the dense forest, her boots sinking into the muddy ground. Hours passed, and the rain showed no sign of stopping. Just as she was about to lose hope, she spotted three pine trees growing so closely together that their trunks intertwined — “three pines stand as one”! Following the path beyond them, she heard the faint sound of rushing water. Pushing through the foliage, she gasped: a stunning waterfall cascaded down a cliff, and the mist refracted the sunlight into a brilliant rainbow. She had found it! But remembering her predicament, she took a quick photo and started back, determined to reunite with her group.
Paragraph 2
When Emma finally made her way back to the campsite, the group was overjoyed to see her safe. She didn’t mention the award but instead shared the story of Clara’s journal and the rainbow waterfall. The next day, with the storm passed, the group hiked to the waterfall together. Everyone was amazed by its beauty. At the award ceremony that night, the teacher announced the winner. To Emma’s surprise, it was her! But she politely declined, saying, “The real award is sharing this wonder with all of you, just like Clara wanted her discovery to be shared.” The teacher smiled and said, “Then we’ll create a new award — ‘The Spirit of Exploration and Sharing’—and it belongs to you.” Emma felt a warmth in her heart, knowing that some discoveries are meant to be cherished together.
