I’ve never been an athlete. Aside from being great at all academic performance at school, my main
goal was to 1 PE at all costs. In my twenties, I went for an occasional yoga or Zumba class, but
that was really the summary of all my athletic accomplishments.
That was until the end of 2016, when I was unexpectedly 2 . The chances of getting a new
job soon were not in my favor and 3 thoughts of not being good enough started to kick in. I was
feeling quite depressed but pushed myself to go and cheer for the TCS NYC Marathon runners as the
course was going through our neighborhood.
However, while being there, I got great 4 from all the runners, smiling, clapping and
high-fiving constantly. Not a runner myself, I thought maybe I could give running a shot, just to try, to
use my neglected (忽略) gym membership and see where it 5 me. And so I tried. I went to my
local gym the next morning and got on a treadmill. I was out of breath by minute five, but I slowed down,
walked for a bit and then restarted. I came back the next day, hoping to 6 a few minutes longer.
By the end of two weeks, I could run for 30 minutes, which was a huge success.
While I saw my body starting to look more toned, I also noticed my negative thoughts didn’t occur
that 7 . And it sparked a thought — what if I could set a running goal and sign up for my
first-ever race I did and races sort of became a new hobby.
In the meantime, I was able to 8 a few freelance (自由职业者的) projects. They offered
me a good income, and, most importantly, the time to work out for the big race. Also, when I was going
for interviews, I started to feel very confident in my abilities, experience and skills.
I got my full-time job offer at my dream company just a couple of weeks before the half-marathon.
Although I got an injury from over-training right before the race, I still went for it and still finished
within my 9 time.
I still have a long running journey ahead of me — I’d love to work on my speed, my technique
and I dream of running a marathon outside of the US. Running gives me 10 that I can do
anything I set my mind to.

Walking around the world may seem impossible, but that didn’t stop Angela Maxwell from putting
one foot in front of the other. In 2020, Maxwell, then in her early 30s, began her walk around the world
alone. After six-and-a-half years and over 32, 000 kilometers, Maxwell’s walk ended where it began.
Before she left on her journey, Maxwell found inspiration from women explorers of the past. “I read
their books in hopes of finding encouragement-and I did—by learning about their challenges and
struggles as well as their triumphs (胜利 ). Each woman’s story was quite different and it gave me the
confidence to give my walk a try,” Maxwell said.
After selling all of her belongings, Maxwell left her hometown of Bend, Oregon with 50 kilograms
of camping gear (装备), dehydrated (脱水的) food, a water filter and clothing for all four seasons.
Maxwell’s worldwide walk wasn’t easy. She suffered from sunburn and heatstroke (中暑 ) in the
Australian desert and dengue fever (登革热) in Vietnam. She heard gunshots while camping in Turkey
and was attacked in her tent in Mongolia. Still, she continued to walk. She learned beekeeping in the
Republic of Georgia and camel-handling on the historical Silk Road in Mongolia. She helped a farmer
renovate (翻新 ) his house in Sardinia and handed out food to homeless people in Italy. She gathered
countless stories that she’d go on to speak about at schools, universities and conferences.
When the reporter asked her what kind of person it takes to walk around the world, Maxwell said,
“It’s probably a combination of ambition, a little stubbornness and a pinch of passion—not for hiking as
a sport, but for self-discovery and adventure.”
“I didn’t start walking because I was fearless—but rather because I was terrified. I was more afraid
of not following my heart than I was of losing everything I owned and loved.”
Throughout her journey, Maxwell raised about $30,000 for non-governmental organizations, such as
Her Future Coalition and World Pulse that focus on supporting girls and young women.
“Walking has taught me that everything and everyone has a story to share, we just have to be willing
to listen,” she said.
24.What do we learn about Maxwell’s journey
A.She stopped her journey halfway.
B.She made full preparations before her journey.
C.She went on a journey with other women explorers.
D.She got a lot of help from strangers during the journey.
25.Which of the following words can best describe Maxwell
A.Strong-willed and brave. B.Enthusiastic and careful.
C.Modest and hardworking. D.Talented and thoughtful.
26.What can we learn from the passage
A.Giving brings you benefits. B.It’s never too old to learn.
C.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. D.Difficult life experiences may result in success.

People do not always expect us to succeed. In light of this, what happens when we think that
others expect us to fail
In one study, researchers carried out an experiment with 330 online workers, asking them to do a
computer task that involved clicking on rapidly moving targets. They were told that someone was
observing their performance. After they completed a 15-second practice, they received one of three
messages — stating underdog expectations, high expectations, or neutral expectations — from the
observer; unknown to them, the expectations were randomly (随机地) given to them. Participants then
performed the task, which required both effort and focus to do effectively. Researchers found that those
who experienced underdog expectations performed better than those who received high or neutral
expectations.
To find out why underdog expectations lead people to perform better, researchers ran another
experiment with 156 business students, having them complete a negotiations simulation (模拟谈判 ).
Before they started negotiating, they were told that experts made predictions on their possibility of
negotiating effectively. Once again, researchers randomly gave them either underdog, high, or neutral
expectations. After the negotiation, the students were asked questions about their desire to prove others
wrong, their self-confidence, and their assertiveness (魄力).
Like with earlier studies, those who experienced underdog expectations performed the best. In
addition, instead of having greater self-confidence or being more assertive, the desire to prove others
wrong was what helped researchers understand why those experiencing underdog expectations
performed better.
Of course, underdog expectations do not always translate to success. There are many more
examples of people failing to overcome the low expectations others set for them. So, when does being an
underdog lead to success rather than failure
Researchers reran the computer task of clicking on a target, but this time was a bit different: before
participants received randomly given underdog, high, or neutral expectations, they were also randomly
given information about the observer’s credibility (可信 度 ). Specifically, participants in the high
credibility condition read that the observer was a high performer in the same task and had an excellent
record of predicting others’ performance. In the low credibility condition, participants read that the
observer was a poor performer and was often incorrect about others’ performance.
Researchers found that underdog expectations from both less and more credible observers
motivated (激励) participants to aim to prove others wrong. But this motivation only translated to better
performance in the face of less credible observers, while it failed when it came from more credible
observers. It appears that trying to prove highly credible people wrong may have developed a sense of
anxiety, which undermined later performance. Quite the opposite, people experiencing underdog
expectations from less credible observers were able to use the desire to prove others wrong and perform
successfully.
Do these results mean leaders should set low expectations for their team to try to improve
performance Of course not. But they do suggest that more people can achieve success when they think
others view them as underdogs.

Culture shock is the feeling of uncertainty, confusion, or anxiety that people may get when they
live in or visit another country that differs from their own. 31 It can undoubtedly affect
people’s lives. The following are some ways to deal with culture shock.
Have a good understanding of culture and culture shock. There are many factors that make up
a culture, including shared beliefs, traditions and morals. 32 It’s because they are
surrounded by people with the same beliefs and values, and cultural differences are only clear when you
meet someone else’s culture.
Keep a journal (日记) of your thoughts. 33 And you are feeling a bit overwhelmed
(不知所措的) by the culture there. Rather than giving in to your anxiety, write it out. Write down how
you felt at the moment and what troubled you or made you happy that day. You can also put something
down if you’re missing anyone from your hometown. 34 Don’t allow yourself to become
a recluse (隐居者 ) during this experience. You can share your feelings and experiences with your
relatives and friends. If you are studying abroad and have other classmates who have similar feelings,
connect with them as well as with those who are adjusting a bit more easily.
Do some things you usually like. Don’t allow the culture shock to occupy your mind. And try to
do something interesting to replace a range of negative emotions, including anxiety, sadness, anger,
homesickness, and sometimes even depression. 35 Or practice your hobbies like reading and
dancing.

There is a drive within all of us to create and express ourselves through art. This drive comes from a
need to achieve a balance within ourselves. Art refers to the theory and physical expression of creativity
found in human societies and cultures. Its major fields include literary arts, performing arts (e. g. theater
and dance) and visual arts (e. g. drawing, painting, photography, film and sculpture).
Art is essential to our culture because it provides us with a deeper understanding of emotions.
Through art, we learn to feel joy in times of happiness and we see pain and despair in times of suffering.
Creating art allows us to slow down and experience a full range of our emotions, while viewing others’
art can release the emotions within us and allow us to explore our feelings. This can help us heal and
grow and succeed both personally and professionally.
Art encourages critical thinking and promotes communication. Throughout the entire process of
creating and appreciating art, we need to make decisions. We use logic and reasoning to find meaning in
what we see or create. Art is a medium to share thoughts, ideas and visions that may not be expressed in
other ways. Through art, we gain a better understanding of past and present cultures. Yet more
importantly, there are no language barriers in art and therefore it is universal.
Art also enhances our lives. The process of experiencing art engages both the body and the mind
and provides us with time to reflect. That’s why art is a necessity, not a luxury. It can make a community
more beautiful and a workplace more interesting. Our homes reflect our personalities through the art we
choose to display. Art can inspire us, make us happy and even motivate us.
We need to express ourselves through art. When we take a closer look at our world and begin to see
the art and creativity in it, it can soothe, enrich or encourage ourselves. Art is beautiful, and beauty is an
aesthetic quality.
36.What drives people to create and express themselves through art
37.What can we get by viewing others’ art
38.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Art helps people gain a better understanding of past and present cultures, and the language barriers
make it difficult for people to appreciate art.
39.What is your favourite art form And why (In about 40 words)
