Born on July 1st, 1948, in the small Italian city of Palmi, Roberto Crea was a genius kid. He moved to the Netherlands and majored in Biological Chemistry. It was this university that directed his interest in the synthesis(合成) of nucleotides, the basic units that are required to build DNA. At that time, not many researchers studied the combination of genes, but Roberto’s strong chemistry background made a historical invention possible.
In 1977, he joined the Genentech, Inc. and the gene synthesis team at City of Hope Medical School. The company funded Dr Crea’s ongoing research on gene synthesis. After working day and night, the brilliant individual finally invented a new procedure that improved the chemical synthesis of genes. Thanks to his rich knowledge and the joint efforts of the excellent Genentech team, he made use of this discovery to produce the human insulin(胰岛素) genes, A and B. It was his invention that allowed Genentech to be labeled as the first producer of human protein. This benefited hundreds of millions of people suffering from diabetes(糖尿病) all over the world.
Today Roberto is known as the father of synthetic insulin. He almost won the Nobel Prize. His efforts did not stop after discovering the synthetic insulin; in fact, he was more than driven and tried to make more contributions to the field of biotechnology. His team of experts discovered Ziconotide under his teaching and guidance. According to leading scientists and researchers, this drug is more powerful and effective than morphine (吗啡), and the best part of this is that it has zero side-effects.
Dr Roberto Crea has a long list of creditable discoveries and researches that he has achieved in 65 years of his life. He is an inspiration for many individuals who aim to add value to humanity with the help of science.

People who routinely eat a lot of red meat may be increasing their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, according to a new study. Processed red meats, like bacon and hot dogs, are linked to an even higher risk.
Researchers tracked the eating habits of more than 200,000 people engaged in long- term health studies for up to 36 years and found that those who regularly consumed a lot of red meat—more than a serving per day—had a significantly higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
“When we looked at the women and men who consumed the most red meat compared to the least, we found about a 50% increase in risk,” says study author Dr Walter Willett of the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. The results were published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
It turned out that the participants in the study who consumed high amounts of red meat also had higher body weight. They consumed more calories(热量) and were less physically active compared with those who consumed the least red meat.
Given that, in the US, only about 4% of people are identified as vegetarians and only 1%vegans, it’s not realistic to think that people will give up red meat altogether. So how much red meat is OK to consume? US dietary guidelines don’t clearly state an amount, but a recent review of observational studies suggests it’s reasonable to limit daily consumption of unprocessed red meat to 50 to 100ms to prevent high blood pressure and heart diseases. Willett’s recommendation goes even further. “A limit of one serving per week of red meat would be reasonable for people wishing to improve health and well- being.” Willett says.
Given the large body of evidence that links too much red meat consumption to increased risks of heart disease and cancer, Christopher Gardner, a food scientist at Stanford University, points out that recommendations to limit the consumption of red meat, particularly processed red meat, have been made by many national and global health organizations.

Smart and highly sensitive(灵敏的), a new soft sensor developed by UBC (University of British Columbia) and Honda researchers opens the door to a wide range of applications in robotics and prosthetics(假肢).
When applied to the surface of prosthetic or robotic arms, the sensor skin provides touch sensitivity and flexibility, making it possible for difficult tasks to be completed by machines, such as picking up a piece of soft fruit. The sensor is also soft to the touch, like human skin, which helps make human interactions safer and more lifelike.
“Our sensor uses weak electric fields to sense objects, even at a distance, much as touchscreens do. But unlike touchscreens, this sensor is soft and can detect (检测) forces into and along its surface,” explained Dr John Madden, senior study author and a professor of electrical and computer engineering who leads the Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory at UBC.
The UBC team developed the technology in cooperation with Frontier Robotics, Honda’s research institute. Honda has been innovating in humanoid robotics since the 1980s, and developed the well-known ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) robot. It has also developed devices to assist walking and the emerging Honda Avatar Robot.
“Dr Madden’s lab has significant expertise in flexible sensors and we’re happy to cooperate with this team in developing touch sensors that can be applied to robots.” said Mr Ishizaki Ryusuke, one of the study’s lead authors and chief engineer at Frontier Robotics.
Dr Madden said, “Human skin has a hundred times more sensing points on a fingertip than our technology does, making it easier to light a match or sew. As sensors continue to develop to be more skin-like, and can also detect temperature and even damage, there is a need for robots to be smarter about which sensors to pay attention to and how to respond. Developments in sensors and artificial intelligence will need to go hand in hand.”

Understand your pet’s body language
A. Pets’ health depends on your daily care.
B. You can do this back at your cat to show your love, too.
C. The context is important in telling which emotion it might be.
D. Birds can be quite expressive through their eyes, feathers, and voices.
E. When dogs feel stressed out or threatened, their eyes will look larger than normal.
F. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together.
G. If you’re unsure of your pet’s body language, consider reading some articles for your specific animal.
Body language is different depending on what sort of animal you have chosen as your pet. 16 Understanding your pet’s body language will help you to be a better communicator, as you can even copy some of its movements, expressions and sounds to send your message in a way it understands.
17 If your dog isn’t looking directly at you, but is looking out of the corners of its eyes so that you see a lot of the whites of the eyes, it might be about to have an aggressive outburst. If your dog is feeling stressed or aggressive, its wide eyes will be accompanied by a rigid(绷紧的) body.
If your cat looks at you and blinks at you slowly, it’s likely communicating affection. 18 For cats, closing one’s eyes in the presence of another is a way to show trust. If your cat feels threatened, its tail will likely be upright; its back will likely be arched, too.
19 If your bird’s pupils(瞳孔) enlarge and shrink rapidly, this can be a sign that it’s excited or greatly interested, or scared or angry. 20 Birds will shake their feathers while cleaning themselves; if their feathers remain shaking, however, this could mean they’re unwell, in which case, take them to an animal doctor for a checkup.

Is Helicopter Parenting Necessary?
We’ve all heard the dangers of helicopter parenting. Remaining too 21 in a kid’s life, especially throughout college, can lead to depression, lack of self-reliance and feelings of entitlement.
Superficially, this wisdom is sound. But some academics and educators now say they see signs of a troubling backlash(反冲). The concern: warnings that moms and dads should 22 “the over parenting trap”—are discouraging parents from getting involved at all.
Yes, parents can be intrusive. 23 , there are increasing examples of parents refusing to step up when students genuinely need their family. One mom kept 24 about her son’s signs of depression until right before he failed a semester. She did not want to “helicopter in.”
That means colleges, which have spent the past decade learning to 25 parents who get too involved, now have a different 26 . But the solution to both is the same: devising ways to channel moms and dads into the right kind of 27 role.
Much of this began because schools were forced to cope with a generation of students 28 with their parents like never before, thanks to smartphones. And with 29 in education soaring, university leaders have started to view parents as investment partners. Most of them have paid for this education for their children or gone into debt for this education. And in some sense, they’re entitled to know and be assured that colleges are 30 their children’s welfare.
Crucially, parent-outreach programs have also served as buffers(缓冲), 31 . students—or worse, their professors—the discomfort of the nagging. At the University of Maryland, for example, the parent office has handled 32 for weekly academic- progress reports, which do not exist in higher education. Parents just want to know they have a place to go where someone will listen to their concerns.
But now, with some moms and dads cautious of even contacting the school in the first place, those same programs are being used to encourage a more balanced approach, often via blogs, email and Facebook. Parents are now advised to be a guide, while acknowledging that the 33 owns the journey. That means asking questions, listening to answers, being patient and trusting kids to resolve their own problems. But if issues 34 , or if a student is in serious mental or physical danger, it also means hopping in the chopper, at least for a little while. “When you think about it, helicopters are useful tools,” says Chelsea Petree, who is launching a parent-outreach program. “They can see things we on the 35 can’t see and get to emergencies quicker than we can. They can swoop in when needed. The key is that they go back up.”

Take Exams Honestly
Dear fellow students,
Nowadays many students care too much about high grades, resulting in growing inappropriate behaviors in exams. As far as I am concerned, taking exams with integrity is necessary. I advocate that we students should take exams honestly.
Honesty is considered as one of important Chinese traditional virtues. As a student, we should avoid cheating in every exam, because cheating doesn’t help us test our actual level of learning. In other words, the process of learning is more meaningful than getting a seemingly perfect but unreal result.
All in all, it is high time that we should value honesty.
第二节(满分25分)
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完 整的短文。
The whole city was quiet when my van (面包车) pulled up to a cafe. It was 8:00 a.m. and the businesses wouldn’t be open for another three hours. When the students studying film production jumped out of the van and began unloading a ton of equipment, I sat in the driver’s seat reading.
I learned a long time ago that I was just the driver and was not wanted or needed on the set. These kids used to need advice and help. Now, as older teens, they were making their own decisions and helping each other. Anything else that I might be able to tell them was not required and unwelcome. Sometimes, that made me feel a bit sad.
Emptied of its movie-related contents, the van now became the place to leave personal items. My job, as the driver, was to stay within calling distance with the keys so that if anything was needed I could open the van.
Knowing that I could find a corner somewhere and finish reading the book, I got out of the van and looked for a place to sit down. It was early, but the California sun was already beating down, and I didn’t want to sit in the heat. Against a wall, in the shade, just twenty or so paces away. I saw a beautifully carved park bench. I noticed that a man was sitting on one end, but there was plenty of room for at least two more people. Walking over, I set my drink on the ground near the leg of the bench and sat on the other end.
The man looked at me oddly but remained seated. I quickly discovered that he’d probably spent the night on the bench. His clothes were dirty and his hair was messy. I soon smelled the unpleasant smell of sweat on his body. I looked at him and smiled, and he smiled back with a mouth of blacked-out teeth.
We both sat there for over an hour. I was reading. He was intently watching the filming. He then stood and walked in front of me. In a slightly shaky but clear voice, he said, “Thank you.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Hearing his words, I raised my head surprisingly.
After several seconds, I realized my actions had truly meant something to this man.
【参考范文】
Hearing his words, I raised my head surprisingly. “For what?” I questioned. He looked at the ground as he whispered, “Usually people won’t even look at me, let alone sit by me. Thank you for treating me like a human being.” I honestly didn’t know what to say as he turned, picked up a small, dirty backpack and walked quickly around the corner. I was shocked. I hadn’t done anything spectacular; I just shared a bench.
After several seconds, I realized my actions had truly meant something to this man. To me, I just wanted a place to sit out of the sun. We were no different, no matter who we were, what we did in our lives or where we laid our heads at night. Both of us just wanted to be treated like a human being. Thinking of the man’s sincere expression, I felt a wave of warmth through me.
