The rise of new social media platforms often leads to worries that their content might increase the risk of eating disorders. But these concerns predate by far the arrival of TikTok or Instagram. The New York Times ran an article in 1985 entitled “Anorexia: It’s Not a New Disease”. It quoted one scholar who reminded readers that thinness was fashionable in the 19th century, when it was thought that “If you looked too robust, you looked like a working woman.”
To be sure, the vast scope of social media has changed the way young people organize their social life, influencing them in ways unforeseen 50 or 100 years ago. Today adolescents use it to connect with people like themselves who might be harder to find in the physical world, especially if they are marginalized in other ways. Many adolescents view aspects of their social media experiences as positive, but the platforms may pose risks for a vulnerable subset. The advice for mitigating harm related to an issue such as an eating disorder has stayed the same for decades: approach media consumption with a critical eye and a healthy dose of literacy about the content you are interacting with.
“Unlike television or print, social media relies on algorithms that constantly monitor and engage you,” says Komal Bhatia, a global health and nutrition researcher at the Institute for Global Health at University College London(UCL), who co-authored a recent review on public health aspects of disordered eating and social media exposure. She and her UCL colleague Alexandra Dane concluded that social media is a “plausible risk factor” in developing eating disorders, even outside Western cultures, and that its use should be viewed as a global public health issue.
“With the power to push out far more images than traditional media, social media, in that essence, is different because site runners are only too happy for us to put our pictures of ourselves out there,” Bhatia says. Users must get into the habit of considering the reality of images purporting to represent a “normal”, “average” or “desirable” body. “What many users see on social media represents a modified reality to some degree,” she says.
“Guiding young people to develop critical skills makes it possible for them to be proactive and is preferable to just telling them they can’t use these platforms,” Harrison says. A draconian approach does little to equip them with the skills they need, and they can still get the negative messages some other way. “But if they look for content that makes them feel good and connects them with actual community for people who are like- minded and want to find a better way of being in the world,” she says, “they can take measures to coax that content into their algorithm.”

A high-protein diet may promote deeper sleep, according to a study that found mice and flies that eat more protein are less likely to wake up from movement-related disturbances. “When you go to sleep, you stop consciously perceiving the world, including things that may disrupt sleep,” says Dragana Rogulja at Harvard University. “We wanted to understand how it is that you can suppress sensory arousal.”
She and her colleagues assessed how 3,400 genes influence sleep in fruit flies. Working with groups of eight flies, they silenced each of these genes in isolation, for a total of 27,200 gene-edited flies. The researchers monitored the flies as they slept on platforms atop loudspeakers, which intermittently produced vibrations.

Low-frequency vibrations woke up about 85 per cent of the flies that had one of two genes silenced: the first governs the production of a chemical messenger known as CCHal, which regulates circadian behaviour, and the other governs the receptor for CCHal. Both genes are expressed in the nervous system and the gut. Removing these genes from the gut alone was enough to make the insects more likely to wake up during vibrations. Further analysis found that certain cells in the gut produce CCHal when exposed to proteins. CCHal then travels from the gut to the brain where it suppresses arousal during sleep.

Taken together, these findings suggest that protein plays a role in preventing arousal during sleep. To confirm this, the team fed flies either a high-protein diet or a regular diet for one day. Half as many flies on the high-protein diet woke up in response to vibrations as flies on a regular diet. A similar experiment in mice produced comparable results.
The findings also only apply to mechanical stimuli like shaking. The genetic alterations didn’t change how easily animals awoke to other disturbances like heat or sound, meaning many other pathways control arousal during sleep as well, says Rogulja.

Starting at university or college can be a big challenge, especially if you’re living away from home for the first time. You’re faced with big questions such as, “Who’s going to do my washing?” “Who’s going to tidy my room?” And, most importantly, “How am I going to eat?” Yes, living on your own means you have to cook for yourself, and when you’re living a student lifestyle, this could be a recipe for disaster.

Students, in the UK at least, often rely on staples such as baked beans or cheese on toast. And for the more adventurous, there’s “spag bol”—spaghetti bolognaise—a budget-friendly bowl of minced beef cooked in a tomato sauce, served on a bed of spaghetti. If you make a huge pan of it, you can probably make it last a whole week! Other low-cost options include jar sauces and oven pizzas.
Recently, a British supermarket suggested that rose harissa paste, organic cider vinegar and Swiss bouillon powder were the essential ingredients needed for the “student store cupboard”. But are these items considered essential and affordable for someone on a budget?

Catrin Stewart, 20, is in her final year at the University of Manchester and is currently food editor of the student paper. She told BBC News that “I’m in a unique position... I’m in a house of eight people and six are vegan. We have to be quite inventive with our food. We have lots of Asian influences, lots of experimenting.” Another student, Eleanor, is vegetarian and finds this meat-free food “easier and less expensive”.
Living on a limited budget is certainly one obstacle to eating a well-balanced diet— some young people also have limited culinary expertise and besides, there are more fun things to go and do than stay at home and cook, that’s why many students survive on takeaways and microwave meals.

But what should a health-conscious student really have in his or her food cupboard? Jack Monroe, a food writer and campaigner, has some advice: baked beans, stuffing, lemon juice, tinned tomatoes and tomato ketchup, described as “salt, sugar, vinegar and tomato all in one handy squeezy bottle”. And if that doesn’t appeal, you can always wait until you visit mum and dad for a slap-up meal!
