Ⅰ.阅读理解
I was fortunate to spend every summer vacation with my parents when I was a kid. By the time I left home at 18, I’d visited every province in Canada. As I look back on my travelling memories, the one in Labrador stands out most.
It takes a long time to drive to Newfoundland from Ontario, especially when you’ve got six people packed into a minivan(小型货车). When my family and I arrived on the island, it was raining cats and dogs every day. Therefore, we kept driving north, hoping to outrun it. We jumped onto a ferry(渡轮) to Labrador and made our way up the coast of this less-populated region.
I
II
III
The scenery in Labrador is sublime. You can see long white sand beaches along the Atlantic coast that look inviting and enjoy the wonderful views of the endless sea, whose water is extremely cold all year round. While standing at the top of a lighthouse, I recalled my dad saying, “This will be the new Caribbean once global warming hits.”
We soon discovered Battle Harbor, a 19th-century fishing village on a small island in the Labrador Sea. Regarded by generations as the unofficial capital of Labrador, it was once the salt fish capital of the world. When I was there in 2003, it was more like a ghost town, with some broken fish-drying shelves left, reminding me that the fishing trade once dominated(控制) the region. I clearly remember feeling the furthest from anything that I’ve ever felt. Multiple ferry rides and 600 miles separated me from the nearest major city.
I
II
III
Twenty years later, I still vividly remember the breathtaking scenery of Labrador, concern myself with the lighthouse in danger of being taken away by global warming, worry about the future of Battle Harbor and continue playing my part in protecting the less- polluted Labrador. If you’re curious about Labrador as well, I highly recommend a film called The Grand Seduction. It’s a delightful comedy about a small fishing village called Tickle Head that’s struggling to figure out its future.
