How Running Changed My Life
Running has truly changed my life, but I never understood running as a form of exercise.
During the first two weeks this year, my grandmother passed away and I started to___1___my job because of office politics. My life felt stuck. So I decided to run. It was my natural___2___. I just wanted to get away. I started running—by the time I came back, I felt tired and energised at the same time. I knew I was on to something.
Once in a while, I would get excited about running. However, I always picked up running for the___3___ reasons. I used running as a reason to buy new fashionable sports clothes. Or I decided to run to lose weight or become healthier. My running never lasted longer than 2–3 weeks. I would lose interest in running. I just didn’t understand it. Why would anyone go through the ___4___ of running Especially when the weather is bad. Who does that I’d rather go to the gym with my friends, talk, and pick up some weights.
But I found that pain is ___5___ the reason I started to run again. When my life was not what I wanted it to be, I was upset. I decided to run when I arrived home one day after work. It was a cold January day, and I only ran for 3 miles in a time that I am too___6___ to mention. But my time is not what’s important—during that run I finally got it.
My stamina(耐力) was nearly the same as my life at the time—it was bad, but I knew it would be better if I___7___running. If I would fight against the wind, rain, cold, and my thoughts of ___8___, I would eventually improve my stamina and be a better runner. My life has improved at the same rate that my running pace and stamina has improved. But running has the most ___9____on my productivity, mood, creativity, and overall livelihood.
Every time life became difficult I would give up. Now, when life is difficult, my response is ___10___—I love the pain and struggle instead of shying away from it. My life is moving forward and I’m doing well in my job again. I owe this to running.
And the best thing about running is that it is easy to start. You just go. You decide when, where, and how fast.

He had to try out many times for making the team. However, he wasn't able to get a chance until his team had a match against the Bears, a team 13 record was perfect. A player on his team was hurt and they would lose the game. Someone suggested giving Paul a shot and the coach agreed. It was 14 (he) time to shine!
B
Miss White 15 (give) a quiz on the weekend homework. Steve hurried through the test and was the first 16 (hand)in his paper. With a look of surprise, Miss White took his paper. Obviously puzzled, she began to look it over. Miss White's face was in total shock! The shy boy in the 17 (seven) grade had just passed his first test.

My dictionary explains"happy" as “lucky" or “fortunate” , yet I think a better explanation of happiness is "the ability to enjoy something". The more we can enjoy what we have, the 18 (happy) we are. It's easy for us not to notice the pleasure we get from loving and being loved, the company of 19 (friend), the freedom to live where we please, even good health. Nowadays, with so many choices and much pressure, we have turned happiness into just one more thing we have. We think we own the right to have it, 20 makes us extremely unhappy.

In 2009 in a small town, Todd Bol came up with an idea to share his mother’s love of reading with others. Bol’s mother had been a teacher who had loved reading. He decided to build a wooden box and fill it with books. Bol placed the box of books on a post in his front yard with a sign that read “Free Books”. Soon his neighbours noticed this tiny model of a “schoolhouse”. They began taking the books and replacing them with books of their own. The tiny library allowed people the opportunity to “check out” books day or night.
Bol’s friends and neighbours wanted little libraries of their own. Bol built several and gave them away. One of his friends, Rick, believed that Bol’s little libraries could benefit more than just local friends and neighbours. With these ideas in mind, Bol and Rick came up with a plan to build over 2,500 Little Free Libraries around the world. They believed that books should be available to all people, no matter where they live or what their background is. To help achieve their goal, Bol and Rick created a website that provides information about the Little Free Libraries and how people can establish little libraries of their own.
Thanks to Bol and Rick, the Little Free Libraries are encouraging people to read more. They didn’t just provide books. They also helped build friendships and a sense of belonging among community members. As more and more people visited Bol’s little library, they began talking with one another. They shared thoughts, ideas, and stories. They got to know one another. Everyone loved the little library. After all, as Bol says, “It’s a magic box with books. People tell us all the time that they’ve met more people in a week than they have in a lifetime.”
Today there are more than 25,000 Little Free Libraries around the world, and they can be found on almost every continent.

You may have seen a talking parrot(鹦鹉) on a TV show, in a movie, or even in someone’s home. The parrot can learn to copy sounds that people make. Parrot are not only animals that can copy the sounds they hear. Dolphins, bats, and some monkeys also copy sounds. Now we can add elephants to this list.
Dr. Poole is a zoologist. She studies the sounds of elephants. While she was in Kenya, she would hear strange noises after sunset made by Mlaika - a 10-year-old female African elephant living near a highway. Dr. Poole says, “I could not tell the difference between Mlaika’s call and the distant truck noise.” She and other scientists studied Mlaika’s sounds. It turned out that Mlaika was copying the sounds of the trucks driving by.
“Mlaika was not the only copycat elephant that copies the sounds they hear,” Dr. Poole says. Calimero is a 23-year-old male African elephant. He spent 18 years with two female Asian elephants. Asian elephants make chirping sounds to talk with one another. African elephants usually do not make chirping sounds. But Calimero now does. He is copying his Asian elephant friends.
A few other mammals, such as bats, dolphins, and humans, have learned to copy sounds around them. Many of them seem to copy the sounds of their friends to create a special connection! Dr. Poole says that elephants, too, need to stay connected with their family and friends. She says,"They make sounds to communicate with each other. When they are separated, they use sounds to keep in contact." Parrots, dolphins, humans, and elephants show that copying sounds is one way that animals and people make new friends and keep old ones.
29.What did Dr. Poole find out about Mlaika
A.She liked living in a zoo. B.She copied truck sounds.
C.She hated strange noises. D.She was separated from her family.
30. Calimero learned to make chirping sounds from________.
A.talking parrots B.research scientists
C.Asian elephants D.trucks on the highway
31.According to the passage, animals copy sounds to__________.
A.make themselves different B.improve their hunting skills
C.give performances in shows D.communicate with each other
D
Have you ever met someone new and felt a little nervous about how they feel about you If you have, you are not the only one. When we meet someone new, we often think we like them more than they like us back. This gap(差异) between how much we like others and think others like us is called a liking gap.
The first study that discovered the liking gap was done with adults. Researchers invited college students to a research laboratory where they chatted with another person they did not know. Afterwards, they were asked separately how much they liked this other person and how much they thought the other person liked them back. Most students said they liked the other person, but thought the other person liked them less. Even more surprising was that the liking gap stuck around even after the people got to know each other.
They also tested groups of children from 4 to 11 years old and found even children experience this liking gap,but it only starts around age 5. At this age, the liking gap is still small. it gets bigger as children get older, probably be cause they start to better understand that what they do influences what others think of them.
Why do we have a liking gap One idea comes from the research on children. At the age of 5,children also start to worry about their reputation (名誉) ,which causes them to think about things like " Do they want to be my friends Do they want to hang out with me " Another idea is that when we are talking to other people, we have to think so much about what we do and say that we forget to pay attention to how others are reacting to us. We are therefore often not sure about how the things we do or say make other people feel.
So, if you sometimes feel that others like you less than you like them back, there is no reason to panic. in fact, the other person likely enjoys hanging out with you just as much as you do, or perhaps even more!
32.What does the underlined phrase “stuck around” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean
A.Closed. B.Appeared. C.Narrowed. D.Existed.
33.When do people start experiencing a liking gap
A.At the age of 4. B.Around the age of 5.
C.From the age of 11. D.After becoming adults.
34.We have a liking gap probably because__________.
A.we are likely to panic. B.we focus on our social skills.
C.we avoid chatting with strangers. D.we take little notice of others' reactions.

Some individuals are born with a gift for public speaking. 35 .Do you want to be a good public speaker Here are some principles you must master.
People want to listen to someone who is interesting, relaxed and comfortable. Too often when you stand up to give a speech, you focus on the "public"at the expense of the “speaking" 36 . Focus on the speaking. Talk directly to your audience, be yourself and make a connection. Even the most successful public speaker will make mistakes. Yet, the only one who cares about any mistake is the one who is speaking. People's attention wanders constantly. In fact most people only absorb about 20 percent of a speaker's message. So, don't stop speaking when you make a mistake unless it's a truly serious one. 37 .
Your goal is not to be a perfect public speaker. 38 . And like everything else in life, that takes practice. Remember, even world champion athletes practice their skills on a consistent basis.
39 . It's rare to hear someone say, "I wish that speaker had spoken longer." On the other hand, you probably can't count the times that you've thought, "I'm glad that talk is over. It seemed to go on forever!" So surprise your audience. Always make your presentation just a bit shorter than anticipated. It's better to leave your listeners wishing for more than shifting restlessly in their seats waiting for your speech finally to end.
A.Do the opposite.
B.You want to be an effective public speaker.
C. You don't need to apologize for a minor slip.
D.When it comes to public speaking, less is usually more.
E.The objective of most speeches is to benefit the audience.
F.Take the fear out of public speaking by focusing on your listeners.
G However, the majority of people are effective speakers because they train to be.

Time:7:00 a.m. Emily Stupi dives into the pool. Cold water hits her, and it's hard to catch her breath. Pulling her arms through the water, Emily begins her first of eight laps. She wants to complete the triathlon(铁人三项).
Emily shakes with cold as she gets out of the pool. Along with three hundred other children and adults, she heads into the one-mile run, followed by a four-and-a-half-mile bike ride.
The triathlon is being held in Glendale, Arizona, and the temperature is freezing on the late October morning. But seeing her father's warm smile makes Emily forget about the cold.
Emily feels lucky to have her father here today. Three years ago, doctors discovered that he had skin cancer. His treatments made him feel tired and sick, but he believed he was going to get better. Emily says, “Courage is something that all people have inside, and they use it to make the world a brave and happy place. My dad showed great courage when he got cancer.
Emily asked a lot of questions about her father's illness. Her mom says, “We had a family discussion and gave her all the facts. We talked about what cancer is and how money is raised for aid(援助)and research.”
Emily made a promise to herself and to her family that she would compete in the triathlon to raise money to help cancer patients. She trained hard for three months, swimming, running and biking several times a week, She then sent out 150 letters asking for donations (捐赠). Her dad matched the money, and Emily gave $7,000 to the American Cancer Society.

Dear Linda,
I'm sorry to hear that you often fall ill recently. I understand how frustrating it must be for you, and I'm writing to suggest you do more physical exercise.
Exercise is extremely beneficial. It can strengthen your immune system, helping you resist diseases. Moreover, it relieves stress and boosts your mood. For exercise, you can try jogging in the park, which is simple and refreshing. Yoga is also a great choice, as it can be done at home and helps improve flexibility.
I truly hope you'll start exercising and regain your health soon. Looking forward to hearing good news from you.
Yours,
Li Hua
