二、阅读理解
Many underwater tunnels have been built around the world, serving as essential connections in regional transport networks. Let’s uncover the top 4 longest underwater tunnels in the world.
Seikan Tunnel
Seikan Tunnel is one of the longest underwater tunnel in the world, in terms of overall length, 33.46 miles.
Connecting Japan’s Honshu and Hokkaido islands, the Seikan Tunnel was finished in 1988, reaching depths of 790 feet beneath sea level. Having two stations is an achievement. They are important emergency exits if there is a disaster.
Channel Tunnel
The Channel Tunnel covers a distance of 31.35 miles linking Folkestone, in England to Coquelles, in France beneath the English Channel at the Dover Strait.
Construction started on both ends of the Dover Strait in 1987 — pleted in 1991, it officially opened on May 6, 1994. Presently it serves more than 10 million passengers over 1.6 million trucks through its rail shuttle service.
Ryfast Tunnel
Located in Rogaland County, Norway, the Ryfast Tunnel System comprises two tunnels stretching a total of 8.9 miles beneath the sea.
Ryfast Tunnel holds the record as the world’s deepest subsea road tunnel, reaching a maximum depth of 958 feet below sea level. Opened in 2020, the tunnel system serves as a replacement for the H gsfjorden ferry(渡船)crossing.
Eysturoyartunnilin tunnel
Established in the year 2020, the Eysturoyartunnilin stretches a distance of 6.9 miles beneath the North Atlantic Ocean linking the two islands, in the Faroe archipelago, Streymoy, and Eysturoy.
Reaching a depth of 613.5 feet below the seabed at its deepest point, this underwater passage comprises a layout of three tunnels; however, its standout feature is undoubtedly the lively centre intersection (十字路口) — the world’s first and only subsea roundabout affectionately known as the “jellyfish (水母) roundabout”.
21.When was the Channel Tunnel officially opened
A.In 1988. B.In 1991. C.In 1994. D.In 2020.

Failure is a big part of everyone’s life. The problem many of us face, however, is that we automatically equate experiencing failure with being a failure. We view it as something to be ashamed of, or embarrassed about, something to be avoided or hidden.
In fact, failure gives us an opportunity to learn, adapt and grow. It should be expected on the way to achieving life goals and used as a feedback mechanism to get it right next time, or the time after.
I recently saw a woman who had to give up studying for her university degree. She had bipolar disorder and was unable to cope with the pressure of studying. She was studying to be a teacher and had hoped to find a teaching job. However, she failed her exams and job interviews, and overall felt like she was failing to achieve anything.
One of the things she enjoyed doing was singing in a band. So in order to earn a bit of money, she began giving singing lessons to children in her community. Fast forward 18 months and she now has her own growing business of teaching singing full-time. She hasn’t achieved this goal in the way she imagined, and she wouldn’t have embarked on this path without the setbacks she encountered.
What was it about this woman that made her succeed Yes, failure had a big part to play, but the ability to bounce back and be flexible was an important factor.
An important part of developing flexibility is having a supportive network. Having relationships with people who can support us helps us go through tough times.
Our attitudes toward ourselves are also crucially important — including a sense that we are in control of our actions, have confidence in what we do, realize our strengths and set ourselves achievable and realistic goals. The secret to flexibility lies in accepting that there are things in life we cannot change. Rather than thinking of ourselves as victims, we need to realize we have the ability to change the way we think and behave. Ultimately, we will realize life may throw manure at us, but we can grow roses with it.
24.What do people usually think of failure
A.Shameful. B.Unavoidable. C.Changeable. D.Rewarding.
25.Why did the woman give up studying for her university degree
A.She had no interest in studying in university.
B.She failed all her exams without exception.
C.She was eager to start a singing business to make money.
D.She suffered from some disturbance and couldn’t handle study pressure.
26.What can be inferred about the woman’s success
A.It had nothing to do with failure.
B.She succeeded easily without any difficulties.
C.Failure and the ability to recover and be flexible both mattered.
D.Only the ability to bounce back and be flexible led to her success.
27.What is the main idea of the text
A.Failure should be avoided at all costs in tough conditions.
B.Singing is a better career than teaching in the case of the woman.
C.Flexibility and accepting unchangeable things are key to dealing with failure.
D.People with bipolar disorder can’t achieve success whatever their efforts are.
Most people hate mosquitoes-but scientists are about to build a “mosquito factory” to release modified mosquitoes.
The modified mosquitoes carry a bacterium called Wolbachia pipientis which can be naturally found in most insect species. However, it’s rarely discovered in mosquitoes. “We actually grow these mosquitoes that contain the bacterium,” Scott O’Neil. An Australian scientist who is involved in the project, told CBC News. When the modified mosquitoes are released, they slowly spread the bacterium to the population.
Several studies have demonstrated the insects’ success. For example, a controlled experiment in Indonesia showed that the modified insect helped reduce the cases of the disease dengue by 77 percent, according to a study paper published in 2021.
The World Mosquito Program has announced that it will release modified mosquitoes in many of Brazil’s urban areas over the next 10 years. The aim is to protect up to 70 million people from diseases such as dengue, a disease mainly spread by mosquitoes. Dengue patients may have mild symptoms like fever, but severe cases can lead to death.
Brazil has one of the highest rates of dengue infection in the world, according to the Nature website. “More than 1,000 people died of dengue in 2022 because of the spread of mosquitoes. It’s going everywhere,” Luciano Moreira, a scientist at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, told CBC News.
Another way to prevent mosquitoes from spreading diseases is by producing genetically modified (GM 转基因的) mosquitoes. In 2022, the US Environmental Protection Agency cleared the release of 2.4 billion GM mosquitoes in California and Florida.
According to the agency, GM mosquitoes carry two types of genes: a self-limiting gene that prevents female offspring from surviving to adulthood, and a marker gene that allows researchers to identify GM ones in the wild. After being released, GM mosquitoes lay eggs, so the genes are passed on to offspring. In this way, the number of female mosquitoes is reduced, therefore reducing the chance of spreading disease.
28.Why are the modified mosquitoes grown according to Scott O’Nei
A.To spread one of bacteria. B.To make money for the scientists involved.
C.To reduce the number of insects in the world. D.To prevent mosquitoes from biting people.
29.What can we infer from the experiment in Indonesia mentioned in the text
A.Dengue is not a serious disease in Indonesia.
B.Modified mosquitoes have no effect on dengue.
C.Mosquitoes in Indonesia are not carriers of dengue.
D.Modified mosquitoes can significantly decrease dengue cases.
30.What does the underlined word “cleared” in paragraph 6 mean
A.Removed B.Approved C.Cleaned D.Blocked
31.What might be the best title for the text
A.The Benefits of GM Mosquitoes B.Modified Mosquitoes to Fight Diseases
C.Genetic Engineering in Medical Research D.The World GM Mosquito Program’s Success
This week, Google researchers published a paper describing results from an AI tool built to create music. The tool, called MusicLM, is not the first AI music tool to be launched. But the examples Google provided demonstrate musical creative ability based on a limited set of descriptive words.
Several different music examples produced by MusicLM were published online. Some of the generated music came from just one-or-two-word descriptions, such as “jazz”, “rock” or “techno”. The tool also created other examples from more detailed descriptions containing whole sentences.
In one example, Google researchers included these instructions to MusicLM, “It is a soundtrack of a game. It is fast-paced and upbeat, with a catchy electric guitar riff (反复乐节). The music is repetitive and easy to remember, but with unexpected sounds.” In the resulting recording, the music seemed to keep very close to the description. The team said the more detailed the description was, the better the system could attempt to produce it. The MusicLM model operates similarly to the machine-learning systems used by ChatGPT. ChatGPT and MusicLM both require powerful computers to operate complex machine-learning models. The San Francisco-based company OpenAI launched ChatGPT late last year. ChatGPT has recently received a lot of attention because of its ability to generate complex writings and other content from just a simple description in natural languages. Such tools can produce human-like results because they are trained on huge amounts of data. Many different materials are fed into the systems to permit them to learn complex skills to create realistic works.
However, the MusicLM researchers said there were some risks linked to the new tool. One of the biggest issues the researchers identified was biases present in the training data. A bias might be including too much of one side and not enough of the other. The researchers said this raised a question about appropriateness for music generation for cultures underrepresented in the training data.
32.What can we learn about MusicLM
A.It is the first AI music tool to be launched.
B.It requires detailed descriptions of full sentences.
C.It generates complex writings from a simple description.
D.It creates music based on simple descriptive words.
33.What can be inferred from the passage about AI tools like MusicLM and ChatGPT
A.They will soon replace human creators. B.They need a large amount of data for training.
C.They have no limitations in their applications. D.They are only useful in the field of music.
34.Which of the following is an issue of the MusicLM model
A.Being difficult for some people to use. B.Requiring too much training data.
C.Creating music with strong preference. D.Producing music works with no creativity.
35.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The development of AI tools. B.The popularity of ChatGPT.
C.The features and problems of MusicLM. D.The difference between MusicLM and ChatGPT.
In today’s rapidly evolving world, the importance of critical thinking can’t be overstated. Critical thinking is the ability to analyze, evaluate, and reason about information in a logical and objective manner. 36 That is to say, it not only helps students analyze information and solve problems but also prepares them for the complexities of the future workplace. This essay will discuss the necessity of critical thinking in modern education and its various benefits.
Critical thinking fosters intellectual curiosity and a love for learning. When students are encouraged to question and analyze, they develop a deeper understanding of the subjects they study. 37 This encourages them to explore new ideas and concepts, expanding their knowledge base. This leads to a more engaged and motivated learning experience.
Critical thinking skills are essential for making informed decisions. In an age where information is readily available but often unreliable, the ability to evaluate sources and discern (辨别) facts from fiction is crucial. Students must learn to evaluate information critically and make informed decisions based on that evaluation. 38
39 Critical thinking promotes creativity and innovation. When students are not afraid to challenge conventional wisdom and think outside the box, they come up with novel solutions to complex problems. This ability to think critically and independently is what sets humans apart from other animals and machines. 40 This fosters an environment of creativity and innovation, which is vital for progress and development in any field.
In conclusion, the inclusion of critical thinking in modern education is not just a nice addition but a necessity. Therefore, integrating critical thinking into educational curricula is extremely important. It prepares students for the challenges of the future and equips them with the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly complex world.
A.It allows them to connect different pieces of knowledge and see the bigger picture.
B.Critical thinking also enhances students’ ability to communicate effectively.
C.Without these skills, students may fall prey to misinformation and make poor choices.
D.It plays a pivotal role in shaping students into well-rounded individuals.
E.This deeper understanding, in turn, sparks their curiosity to delve further into the material.
F.Beyond academic and decision-making benefits, critical thinking has another key advantage.
G.Moreover, it helps them develop a sense of skepticism, which is important in today’s society.

When I was a kid, my parents and I lived near the forest. They often told me that our family was a team that needed to work together for the household to function smoothly. There was always an abundance of work to do — cooking, cleaning, and walking dogs. I volunteered to walk our dog, Max, who had been adopted one month before. I never dared let this giant dog off the lead (牵狗绳), just in case he took off.
One morning, we were walking along in the forest when Max started pulling on the lead. At first, I was able to hold on despite the wet ground from a recent shower. But the more I tried to stop him pulling, the more it turned into a tug of war. And thanks to the slippery ground, I lost.
Pulling his lead, Max shot off like a bullet, leaving me screaming behind. I chased him but lost my footing and fell face-first into some mud. I stumbled (踉跄) to my feet, but looking ahead, I found him running back towards me. I thought he was going to stop and give me his “Sorry” look. But instead, the dog shot past me and returned after a while.
As soon as we got home, my mother immediately attended to Max with a warm towel and a doggy treat. I thought seeing me stumbling and covered in mud, I would also get a warm cup of tea and a motherly kiss. Instead, I got a very loud lecture about letting the dog loose in the forest.
I felt frustrated. It wasn’t fair that she didn’t understand how difficult it was to control Max. I fought back, “Stop lecturing me! Why is everything my fault ” With these words, I stormed into my bedroom and slammed the door shut.
In the evening, I heard my mother call Max and take him out. It wasn’t long before I heard my mother screaming and the door opening again.

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

The following week, Mr. Perkins bought a new, bright yellow Beta 400s. He was satisfied with it, and drove to work in it the very next day. He was even more satisfied with his new car when he saw all the other Beta 400s in front, behind, and on both sides of him. Mr. Perkins parked his car in a big parking lot near his office, and worked the rest of the day. But when he came back at five o’clock, there were so many bright yellow Beta 400s in the parking lot that he did not know which was his car. He tried his key in some of the cars, but people passing by gave him a look he didn’t like. So he stopped. Poor Mr. Perkins had to wait nearly two hours until his car was the only one left in the parking lot.

I walked out of my room. Not surprisingly, they were both covered in mud. It was evident that Max had led my mother on another wild chase through the forest.
