Jenny, Danny, and Brian are on a beach vacation with their families. They’re excited to go for a swim in the ocean.
Jenny: Ouch! I stepped on something and it hurts!
Danny: Is it a shark
Jenny: You’re kidding me. It’s just some plastic. Look, it’s a plastic bottle.
Danny: Plastic It should be in the bin, not in the sea.
Brian: I’ll go throw this bottle in the recycling bin.
Danny: Look! That man over there is leaving his garbage on the beach. Such behaviour is harmful to the ocean and its creatures.
Jenny: Exactly! Last week, I read that a whale died with more than 20 plastic bags, a toy gun, and other rubbish, 10 kilos in all, in its stomach.
Danny: That’s such a terrible story. If we do nothing, the situation will get worse.
Brian: How about cleaning up the beach
Danny: Sounds good. But it would take too long. There are only three of us!
Jenny: We can ask our family members to help.
Brian: Good idea!
They explain the plan to their family members, and everyone agrees to help. They spend the rest of the afternoon picking up bottles, plastic bags, and all kinds of garbage on the beach. Before leaving, they take a final swim. They feel proud that they made a difference at the beach.

3. Such behaviour is harmful to the ocean and its creatures.
这种行为对海洋和海洋生物有害。
(1) ①behaviour n. 行为;举止
good/bad behaviour 好的/ 不好的行为
e.g. The children always behave themselves at home.
孩子们在家一向很守规矩。
②behave v. 表现;有礼貌
behave oneself 举止有礼貌,表现得体。
e.g. She is pleased with her child's good behaviour.
她对孩子的良好行为感到欣慰。
(2) harmful adj. 有害的
harmless adj无害的
be harmful to = do harm to = be bad for,意为“对……有害处”。
e.g. Using too many plastic bags is harmful to the environment.
使用太多塑料袋对环境有害。
4. If we do nothing, the situation will get worse.
如果我们什么都不做,情况会变得更糟。
(1)结构分析:这是一个主从复合句。主句是the situation will get worse,其中the situation 作主语;will get 作谓语;worse 作表语。从句是由If 引导的条件状语从句,we 作主语;do 作谓语;nothing 作宾语。
e.g. If you study hard, you will get good grades.
如果你努力学习,你就会取得好成绩。
If it rains, we will stay at home.
如果下雨,我们就会待在家里。
“If + 从句,+ 主句.”表示“如果……,……就会……”。注意:在if 引导的条件状语从句中,从句用一般现在时,主句用一般将来时,即遵循“主将从现”原则。
(2)worse adj. 更糟的;更坏的
get worse 变糟糕
worse and worse 越来越坏;每况愈下
What’s worse 更糟糕的
e.g. If you never try, your life is only going to get worse.
如果你从不尝试,你的生活只会变得更糟。
5. They explain the plan to their family members, and everyone agrees to help. 他们向家人解释了计划,大家都同意帮忙。
agree to do… 同意做某事
agree to … 赞同;赞成
agree on… 对……达成一致
agree with sb 同意某人(的观点或意见)
e.g. Is he going to agree to our suggestion
他会同意我们的建议吗
They couldn't agree on where to go for dinner.
他们无法就晚餐地点达成一致。
6. They spend the rest of the afternoon picking up bottles, plastic bags, and all kinds of garbage on the beach. 下午剩下的时间,他们在海滩上捡瓶子、塑料袋和各种垃圾。
(1)the rest of 表示“剩余的”。当 “the rest of +名词、代词” 作主语时,谓语动词的单复数取决于of后边名词或代词的数。
e.g. The rest of the eggs have gone bad already.
其余的鸡蛋已经变坏了。
The rest of the bread has been eaten up.
剩余的面包已经被吃光了。
(2)all kinds of 表示“各种各样的”。后接不可数名词或可数名词复数,kinds 前还可用 many、different、these 等词修饰以表达不同的含义。
e.g. There are different kinds of animals in the zoo.
在动物园里有不同种类的动物。
We saw many kinds of birds in the forest.
我们在森林里看见许多种类的鸟。
