At M. E. School in Tucson, Arizona, raising fish at school was one small answer to a big problem: many people in the neighborhood didn't have cnough food. The students could eat breakfast and lunch at school, but their families didn't always have enough money for dinner. Buying fresh foods, such as vegetables and meat, was difficult. The teachers had an idea: could the students raise food at school for the neigbborhood
It wouldn't be easy. There isn't enough water in Tucson because it is in a desert. Soil doesn't always have the nutrients (营养) that plants need to grow, so the students would need natural helpers.
To solve the problem, the school set up a system in which fish po op makes plants grow better and the plants’ roots clean the water in the fish tank. Students do research on the fish. “I did a task in the project on how much tilapia eat.” says Emmanuel. “We wanted to see if they preferred to eat in warm or cold water. They liked warm water better.”
Fish aren't the only animals that help students feed their neighbors. Chickens lay eggs. Bees also come to help turn flowers into vegetables.
When the students have raised enough food, it's time for Market Day. Vegetables are given to people in the neighborhood for free. Students sell eggs and tilapia to raise money for seeds, fish food and chicken food.
“People don't have a lot of money, so it's a nice dream we have to give them food. It's also a chance to be healthy and eat better.” says Emmanuel. “We can plant good food and have fun while we' re doing something important,” says Blanks. “I'm so happy to be at this school.”
( ) 48. Why did the teachers at M. E. School decide to raise food for the neighborhood
① The families in the neighborhood were poor.
② People there wanted a market for fresh foods.
③ Students wanted to learn how to grow vegetables.
④ The natural condition isn't proper for growing plants.

Chief of police, Otchumyelov, and one of his officers, Yeldyrin, are walking in the village square when they hear a man crying out that he has been bitten. A moment later, they hear a dog crying in fear.
A dog is shouting and jumping, followed by Hryukin, the local goldsmith. Hryukin catches the dog to stop it from running away. The dog is terrified, and Hryukin is angry about his bleeding finger. Soon,a crowd of villagers gathers around Hryukin and the dog. Hryukin tells Otchumyelov that he was minding his own business when, for no reason, the dog bit him. Hryukin shows his finger and is worried that he won't be able to work because of his injury. “The dog’ s owner should pay me!” Hryukin says.
Otchumyelov agrees and adds that the dog must be put down as well. “Who owns this dog ” he asks the crowd, eager to find the culprit (罪犯). When someone answers that the owner is the powerful General Zhigalov, Otchumyelov becomes nervous and suddenly suggests a different possibility: This dog may actually be innocent (无罪的).
“How could this tiny dog reach your finger if you were minding your own business ” Otchumyelov asks Hryukin. Someone in the crowd answers that he saw Hryukin anger the dog by sticking a cigarette in its face. Hryukin starts to negate this, but he's interrupted by Yeldyrin.
Yeldyrin says that the dog isn't General Zhigalov's. Very quickly, Otchumyelov agrees. He points out that the general would never bother with a dog like this one. But just as Otchumyelov decides they must kill the dog, Yeldyrin remembers seeing a similar dog on the general's property.
Depending on who he believes to be the dog's owner, Otchumyelov has a different answer for whether the dog should live or die. Finally, the general's cook arrives on the scene with the truth. The cook says that this dog isn't General Zhigalov's but instead belongs to the general's brother, another powerful man. After hearing this, Otchumyelov quickly compliments the dog and laughs about the whole incident. As the cook leaves to return the dog to its owner, Otchumyelov threatens to hurt Hryukin for making a scene. The crowd laughs at the goldsmith and his injured finger.

Humans are getting away from the nature gradually because of the developing technology. But now Digital Technology is offering us an opportunity to listen to the sounds in the nature in powerful ways, making us get closer to the worlds of animals and plants.
All around the nature, there are sounds that we struggle to pick up and understand. Elephants, for example, communicate with each other using infrasound, a sound far below our human hearing range. Coral in the ocean also communicates with each other through sound waves, with one purpose of attracting baby coral to areas where it can successfully grow. This is a shocking fact as coral doesn't have any ears!
To pick up sounds humans are normally unable to hear, scientists have placed listening devices in these environments. Researchers have attached(连接) tiny microphones to honeybees and turtles, and stuck listening posts that can receive different sound waves from coral reefs and trees. These devices are controlled by computers and networked with digital sensors and satellites. When interconnected, these digital devices work like a hearing aid: enabling humans to observe and record nature's sounds beyond the limits of our own listening ability. After the sounds are recorded, AI is then able to determine their meanings.
With this technology, humans can not only understand the animals, but also communicate back to them. For example,a team of researchers in Germany decoded the honeybees’ behavior with AI. Then they taught tiny robots how to do the honeybee dance. Using these dancing machines, the scientists were able to order the honeybees to stop moving, and to communicate where to fly to collect a specific nectar. In addition to the possibility of speaking with animals, the research could also be used to create a form of healing for animals and plants. That's to say, in the near future, scientists might be able to get coral to grow in certain areas by playing“healthy reef” sounds, which could help some of the damage we have caused to become healthy again.
Now, Digital Technology provides a new way for humans to listen to the lively sounds all around us. The dream of allowing humans to communicate with different animals and plants throughout the nature is being on its way.

Dopamine Dressing
Have you seen “dopamine (多巴胺) dressing” on your social media It's one of the most popular fashion trends for 2023.
First created by US fashion psychologist Dawnn Karen in her book Dress Your Best Life in 2020, dopamine dressing-to put it simply - is dressing for joy. Through brightness and purity of colors, the dressing is aimed to create joyful emotions for people.
Science showed long ago that different colors can affect people. They could make us feel warmer or cooler and also affect our feelings. For example, bright colors can make people feel lively. Colors like black, white and grey may bring a sense of sadness instead.
Learning how colors work, fashion brands have also used colors in different ways. For example, Versace, an Italian brand, added the idea of dopamine dressing to their clothes in 2021 It said:“This can spread fun and positive energy to the world through fashion”. In the last few years, the pandemic has put everything into question. “Usually, we’ re dressing for external factors - the weather, other people and special events. During the pandemic, there was a change. Since no one was around to tell you what to wear, you let yourself find styles that make yourself happy,” Karen told TODAY.
Now, many people take this style to fight back bad feelings and show themselves. “I’ ve seen people who are very shy put on colorful clothes and become... free,” Karen said. “Their whole mood changes when they wear clothes that show who they really are.”
