It's amazing to see Kongming lanterns rise into the night sky, like stars in the dark. These lanterns are also known as sky lanterns.
The story of sky lanterns began in ancient China, nearly 2,000 years ago during the Eastern Han Dynasty. It's believed that they were first invented by Zhuge Liang. He used them as a communication tool in the army. Different shapes, colors, and flying patterns had different meanings.
As centuries passed, the role of sky lanterns has changed greatly. Instead of being an army tool, they have become symbols of peace, joy, and connections. Now, they are often used at festivals and celebrations, including Chinese New Year. People often write their wishes and dreams, with personal messages, on them before letting them go. They believe that the lanterns carry those high into the sky and make them come true. This practice has got into many cultures around the world.
Unlike in ancient times, people use different things to make sky lanterns now. Traditional sky lanterns are always believed to cause wild fires, hurt animals and create waste, so modern materials are friendly to the environment. Modern sky lanterns are mainly made from natural bamboo and rice paper. These choices allow people to enjoy the tradition safely and in a green way.
