During the lively Paris Olympics, while the spotlight shone on the athletes, a group of unsung heroes worked tirelessly behind the scenes — the Olympic volunteers. This year, out of 300,000 applicants, around 45,000 were chosen as volunteers, with 20 percent coming from nearly 150 countries. These volunteers wore bright green uniforms (制服) to be easily noticed in the purple venues (场馆). They offered help to viewers and media alike, making them an important part of the Olympic experience.
On my first day as a reporter, I met a technical problem with my media system account. Thankfully, Chinese volunteer Guo came to help me out. “I hope to improve my language, communication skills, and problem- solving methods through this event,” said 24-year-old Guo from Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province, who was studying wireless communication at the Paris Institute of Digital Technology. As a former professional swimmer, Guo saw this as her chance to take part in the Olympics, though in a different role. Another Chinese volunteer, Yang, faced challenges in managing her job and volunteer duties. Despite giving up her holidays, she felt great pride in contributing to the event.
One of my most memorable experiences was meeting with a French volunteer. When I needed help to find the visitor center, a young man on a scooter (小型摩托车) appeared, like a sort of “Monkey King riding a cloud”, and offered to take me there. After helping me, he expressed his admiration for the Beijing Olympics and his desire to visit China again.
Volunteers like them were seen everywhere — from bus stops to competition venues — offering directions and helping with a smile. When large crowds left the venues after the events, causing overcrowding, some volunteers sat on high chairs with loudspeakers, providing directions to go outside in both English and French with a smile. These amazing volunteers, truly show the Olympic spirit, making the event and Paris shine even brighter.
24.Why might the volunteers wear bright green uniforms
A.To stand out in the crowd. B.To show love for athletes.
C.To fit in with the venues. D.To stand for their countries.
25.What do we know about Guo
A.She found it hard to balance her job and volunteer work.
B.She both swam and volunteered in the Paris Olympics.
C.She wanted to improve herself through volunteer work.
D.She wasn’t as patient and helpful as the French volunteer.
26.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To doubt the organization of the Paris Olympics,
B.To praise the service of Paris Olympic volunteers.
C.To show the meaning of hosting Olympic Games.
D.To provide a detailed schedule of Olympic events.
27.How is the text mainly developed
A.By listing the benefits of volunteer work.
B.By discussing historical Olympic events.
C.By comparing different views on Olympics.
D.By sharing personal stories and experiences.

For people suffering from depression (抑郁), there’s an all-natural treatment they should use — getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic(遗传的) risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes (基因) were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.
28.How did the researchers reach their conclusion
A.By analyzing a mass of data.
B.By conducting genetic research.
C.By comparing various levels of activity.
D.By tracking the subjects for many years.
29.What does the study show about depression
A.Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B.Exercise may decrease and prevent it.
C.Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D.Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
30.What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Harmful. B.Unusual. C.Common. D.Complex.
31.What is the purpose of the text
A.To discuss a disease of depression.
B.To explain a phenomenon of depression.
C.To analyze a genetic risk of depression.
D.To introduce a method to lower the risk of depression.

A young sperm whale (抹香鲸) discovered dead off the coast of Spain died from eating a lot of rubbish. About 64 pounds of rubbish, including plastic bags, ropes and fishing nets, was found inside the sperm whale’s dead body.
The 32-foot-long whale was discovered near the small holiday place of Cabo de Palos in the southeast Murcia area in February. Officials at the EI Valle Wildlife Reserve Center found that it had died because it was unable to remove the rubbish from inside its body.
The animal’s sad death has prompted Murcia’s government alongside the European Environmental Association and the European Fund Regional Development, to start some actions against ocean waste.
Consuelo Rosauro, the government’s director for the natural environment, said, “The plastics in seas and oceans are one of the biggest dangers to the protection of wildlife in the world.” “Many animals get caught in the rubbish or eat a lot of plastics, which end up causing their death, she added.” The problem is common in the Murcia area, and we must solve it by taking clean- up actions, and above all, increasing awareness of local people.
About 19 billion pounds of plastic waste ends up in the world’s oceans each year. Researchers say that the amount of plastic waste will be twice as much as it is now by 2025 if quick action is not taken.

32.Why did that sperm whale die
A.It could not find food. B.It had eaten too much rubbish.
C.It was already too old. D.It could not leave the rubbish around it.
