Carl Allamby started his car repair business at the tender age of 19. Over the years, it had grown into two shops with 11 workers, but Allamby had become uneasy, longing for something more. Therefore, at the age of 34, he decided to go for his bachelor’s degree in business management.
After taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology to get his degree, which later turned out to be the best thing that ever happened. Biology classes reawakened a childhood dream that he had hidden somewhere deep within himself.
Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Allamby was raised by his stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door-to-door. His school didn’t offer the advanced science classes that might have led him on a premed (医学预科的) path. Even if it had, doing well in school could prove dangerous. “You could get into a lot of trouble just for being the class nerd (讨厌的人),” Allamby said. So he set aside the thoughts of becoming a doctor and started fixing cars instead.
But a different Carl Allamby walked into that biology class at age 39. He was ready to live his dream. With the support of his family he soon decided to skip business school to take science classes. Becoming a doctor was late and he would become a nurse instead, he reasoned. But Allamby’s chemistry professor told him “Why not a doctor You have a great talent for the work. You will go a long way.”The professor was right and Allamby did very well.
In 2015, Allamby cut ties with his past, and then he started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019, Carl Allamby became Carl Allamby, MD.He took a job in emergency medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akron General.
“How many people can do something so brand-new at such a late stage in their life ” he said. “My age and past career are all good reasons why I shouldn’t be here. And yet, here I am.”

In the last few years, we have seen environmental disasters on a grand scale, and experts are predicting worse to come. Jin Li reports on our Earth’s Changeable weather patterns.
Thunderstorms, floods, earthquakes, typhoons, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and forest fires have become increasingly common. There have been terrible floods in Asia, Africa, America and Oceania. Storms have been getting worse everywhere too, with more hurricanes hitting the US and Central America. Reduced rainfall has affected Africa for years, with severe droughts in Somalia and Kenya a in 2017, as well as many other zones becoming drier. Reduced rainfall in Canada resulted in a huge forest fire in 2016. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes have always been a threat. In 2016, there were three volcanic eruptions at almost the same time in Indonesia. There have been serious earthquakes in many parts of Asia, Europe and South America. A massive earthquake hit central Italy in August 2016, killing at least 247 people.
So Why is nature beginning to turn on us One answer is overpopulation. The population of the world is growing at the rate of 10,000 people an hour, nearly 90 million a year. Most of the growth is in the developing world. On top of that, there is the added aspect of global warming. This has mainly been caused by the huge amounts of carbon dioxide produced by factories and vehicles. The destruction of the word’s forests plays a part, too. As a result, a hotter ocean causes stronger winds. Atlantic hurricanes are 40% stronger now than they were 30 years ago.
Landslides and earthquakes are even more dangerous now than in the past because around half of the world’s population now live in cities. Many people in cities and towns in South America and Asia are at risk from landslides. In April 2017, the city of Mocoa in Colombia was hit by a landslide, leaving many dead and injured. A great number of people live at risk from earthquakes too. These have claimed more than 1.6 million lives in the last hundred years.
Most disaster experts believe that things could get a lot worse. Professor Hou Ming of Peking University studies volcanoes. He warns that the world has not seen the worst yet. The worst eruption in human history was probably Mt Tambora in 1815, in Indonesia. But evidence shows that 73,000 years ago there was a much greater eruption. “It reduced temperatures by maybe 60C in some places, and the whole planet was sent into winter for years. And there are about two of these events every 100,000 years...”
According to the second paragraph, _______________.
A. storms only occurred in Asia and Africa in recent years
B. reduced rainfall has caused severe droughts since 2017
C. more hurricanes hit the US and Central America as storms have become worse
D. volcanic eruptions and earthquakes have become a new threat to humans recently
29. What does the underlined phrase "turn on" mean in the paragraph 3
A. Depend on. B. Care for. C. Cooperate with. D. Fight against
30. It can be inferred from the text that ______.
A. human activities have contributed to the worsening of some disasters
B. the number of Atlantic hurricanes has increased by 40% in 30 years
C. volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are more frequent than before
D. droughts have affected many African countries since 2017
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the future
A. Positive B. Negative C.Indifferent D. Doubtful
D
Does Chinese philosophy influence your parenting It is the question I am most often asked. Chinese philosophy contains many lessons that are useful, accessible and timely when applied to the challenges of parenting. Confucianism and Daoism suggest ways to guide your children toward meaning and fulfillment rather than wealth and fame.
Parenting is tough, especially because there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Different kids need different things. How do we stay focused on what matters most How do we navigate difficult times with our kids and support them when they struggle All of us want our children to be successful, partly because we love them and want them to be happy. But it is easy to mistake “success” with certain kinds of academic or athletic achievements.
Of course, one can define success in this way. But ancient Chinese philosophers believed that real success is not measured by fame, money or power. A successful life is one in which a person flourishes: they are happy, fulfilled, and they find meaning in what they do and who they are. This type of fulfillment comes from loving and being loved by others within the context of meaningful, lasting relationships; giving generously of what you have to others; caring for and having a genuine love of nature; and shouldering your responsibility.
Most of us know that having an Ivy League degree and a high-paying job is not going to make our children happy and fulfilled in life. Yet we worry about how they will find things they love to do and that they are good at. Philosophers from the two most influential ancient Chinese traditions - Confucianism and Daoism - talk more about human flourishing, virtue, happiness and fulfillment than about “success”.
Chinese philosophers argued that we genuinely flourish - are happiest and most fulfilled - when we develop these virtues. This can never be measured in terms such as earning power, entering famous schools or getting jobs. Instead, it is measured in how we treat people - how one loves and is loved by one’s family and friends - and in what one does to make the world a kinder, gentler, more humane and beautiful place. They encourage us to help our children learn more about the world around them.
The Confucians and Daoists were a little like yin and yang: Confucians have a lot of active, hands-on ways to help children grow, such as participating in traditions, while the Daoists recommend simpler activities, such as exploring the beauty of nature. Their diverse views on living a good life are precisely what makes Chinese philosophy such a great resource for parents.
Parenting is messy. It is not simple or straightforward but complex and difficult. There are no magic solutions that make things easy or smooth. Most of us will need to piece together different approaches in order to find something that works well and feels right in different situations, for different children, and at different times in a child’s life.
32.According to the author, parenting is challenging because________.
A.parents don’t know what success refers to
B.children don’t believe in Chinese philosophy
C.there are many theories of parenting to choose
D.one can’t find a standard approach to suit every child
33.What is the opinion of ancient Chinese philosophers
A.People who flourish can feel successful because they live a meaningful life.
B.Only when people make contribution to society can they feel successful.
C.A successful life can be measured by reputation and wealth.
D.Success just means one should be friendly to nature.
34.What can we infer from this passage
A.Daoists are more influential than Confucians because of their simpler activities.
B. Confucians and Daoists together can provide parents abundant resources.
C. Confucians think entering famous school can make children flourish.
D. It is enough for parents to just learn Chinese Philosophy well.

If you enjoy walking for exercise, there’s a simple way to meet your demand - change your walk into a ruck, and it’s an increasingly popular form of exercise.
Rucking is walking with weight on your back. The term “rucking” comes from ruck marching, a core skill used by the military around the world. One of the tests the army normally gives to soldiers is a 12-mile ruck, which they must complete within three hours while carrying a weight of at least 35 pounds.
The reason why rucking is growing in popularity is that it’s an easy and all-body exercise. One study in 2019 showed that 10 weeks of weighted walking improved physical performance. Since rucking is usually performed outdoors, there is no doubt that it’s also good for your mental health. Lots of studies suggest that the mental health benefits of being in a natural environment are huge.
There are several tips for your rucking when you get started. First, don’t be too eager. As with any new exercise, you’ll need to begin slowly. Start with an empty backpack (背包) and walk a distance you’ve already done. When you start adding weight to your pack, try something low, like 10% of your body weight. Adding weight is going to put more stress on your ankles, knees, hips and back, so do it gradually. Another option is to start with a weighted vest (背心) instead of a backpack. This spreads the weight between your front and back. And of course, don’t forget your feet. Select a comfortable pair of shoes to prevent getting hurt.
