Foreign visitors to the UK might be disappointed when they learn that not everyone there speaks like Harry Potter and his friends. Usually, there’s an assumption by many non-Brits that everyone in Britain speaks with what’s known as a Received Pronunciation (RP,标准发音) accent, also called “the Queen’s English”. However, while many people do talk this way, most Britons speak in their own regional accents.
Scouse, Glaswegian and the Black Country — from Liverpool, Glasgow and the West Midlands — are just three of the countless non-RP accents that British people speak with. There are even differences in accents between towns or cities just 30 kilometers apart. What is even more disappointing is that not speaking in a RP accent may mean a British person is judged and even treated differently in their everyday life.
In a 2015 study by the University of New South Wales, videos of people reading a passage in three different UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The group then rated how intelligent they thought the readers sounded. The lowest-rated accent was the Brummie accent, native to people from Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered the working class.
However, there is no need to be disappointed though you are not speaking in a RP accent. In fact, doing the opposite may even give you advantages.
Kong Seong-jae, 25, is an Internet celebrity from Seoul. After studying in the UK, he picked up several regional accents. He’s now famous for his online videos, where he shows off the various accents he’s learned. “British people usually get really excited when I use some of their local dialect words, and they become much friendlier. I think it makes a bit of bond between local people and foreigners to speak in their local accent,” he said.
So if you’re working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone from Liverpool, Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely to make more friends.
28. What can we infer from Paragraph 1
A. Only “the Queen’s English” is accepted in the UK.
B. Non-Brits usually hold that all Britons speak in a RP accent.
C. Foreign visitors are disappointed at their own spoken English.
D. Any Received Pronunciation around the world is also called “the Queen’s English”.
29. What do people think of the Brummie accent
A. It is closest to the RP accent.
B. It is smart and easy to understand.
C. It is favored by foreign visitors to the UK.
D. It is spoken by people of the working class.
30. What does the underlined phrase “doing the opposite” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Speaking in regional accents. B. Speaking in a RP accent.
C. Speaking the Brummie accent. D. Speaking like Harry Potter.
31. What is the passage mainly about
A. How much British people value the RP accent.
B. A comparison between different British accents.
C. The impact of regional accents on people’s lives.
D. A study about the most intelligent accent in Britain.

A new study, a project of the researchers from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, finds that a fitness tracker probably does not help with weight loss.
The trackers are designed to record your physical activity. They are usually worn around the wrist, where they record a person’s heart rate. The research team looked at two groups of people. The first wore a fitness tracker and took part in health consultation (咨询) with experts for best weight loss plan. The researchers compared this group with people who only got health consultation.
The study found that those only speaking with the health experts lost nearly 6 kilograms, but those using a fitness tracker lost only 3.5 kilograms. John Jakicic, the lead researcher, questioned the use of electronic devices for weight control in place of “effective behavioral counseling for physical activity and diet.”
The study involved 470 people age between 18 and 35. Some of them were overweight, while others were considered obese (肥胖). Over three fourths of them were women. All were told to increase physical activity and start on a low-calorie diet. They had their weight measured once every six months. After six months, researchers divided the group into two parts: one continued with monthly consulting, while members of the other group were given a fitness tracker. Eighteen months later, both groups showed great improvements in fitness, physical activity and diet, with no big difference between groups. However, when it came to losing weight, the people who only spoke with experts lost nearly twice as much weight.
Jakicic said, “The study’s findings are important because effective long-term treatments are needed to deal with America’s obesity.” More information is needed, he added, to learn how to best use these trackers to help adults who want to lose weight.
32. According to Paragraph 2, both groups of people in the study were asked to ____________.
A. record heart rates B. wear fitness tracker
C. start on high-calorie diet D. have health consultation
33. What can we infer about the study mentioned in the text
A. The study went on for about two years.
B. More than 120 men took part in the study.
C. Health consulting helps lose almost 6 kilograms.
D. Wearing a fitness tracker is more useful for keeping slim.
34. Why does Jakicic think the findings are important
A. Physical activity and diet have no effect on weight loss.
B. Wearing fitness trackers hardly helps people lose weight.
C. There are great differences in health between both groups.
D. Dealing with obesity needs effective long-term treatments.
35. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To advise people to trust experts rather than fitness trackers.
B. To introduce a research team led by the University of Pittsburgh.
C. To report the findings of a study on fitness trackers and weight loss.
D. To explain why fitness trackers are useless for long-term weight control.

The familiar smell of garlic and onion filled the air as I opened my lunch bag to see what my mom had packed for me. On any other occasion, I would have been delighted to eat my mom’s fried tofu: a Chinese dish that I often ate for dinner. But not today, the day a nice girl had invited me, the new girl at school, to sit with her friends during lunch.
“Emma, over here!” My new friend was waving her arms, trying to get my attention.
As I prepared to walk over to the table, memories of elementary and middle school lunchtimes came back. I remembered my embarrassment as my friends would hold their noses when I brought homemade Chinese food. I remembered how my embarrassment changed to anger when I complained about the smell to my mom.
I had argued with my mom that I wanted “normal” food for lunch. I remembered the look on my mom’s face, a mix between disappointment and confusion. But I was determined and she gave in. So for the rest days of middle school, my mom packed odorless (没有气味的), non-Chinese food like ham and cheese sandwiches. However, that day, she was in a rush and packed me leftovers(剩菜) from dinner.
As soon as I got to my new lunch table, I tried to hide my lunch bag down under my seat. I sat quietly, trying not to be noticed when Katrina, a newly met girl, asked where my food was. “I’m not really hungry,” I replied in an insecure voice. But Katrina had already seen me carry my lunch so she spoke out, “Then, I’ll eat it!” The other girls laughed — clearly Katrina was known to be a big eater.
I didn’t want to be rude to a potentially new friend so I reluctantly(不情愿地) dragged out my lunch bag. The moment I opened my lunch box, I could practically taste the garlic and onion. The girls, piqued (激起好奇心) by the smell in the air, all curiously looked at the oval-shaped lunch box. I expected an “Ew” or a “What is that ”

Dear Tom,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble getting along with your new classmates. And I can deeply understand your loneliness at the moment. Therefore, I’m writing to share with you some personal advice.
One effective approach is to start conversations by finding common interests—a simple “Do you like basketball ” can really help break the ice. Another idea is to get involved in clubs or group activities, since working together often brings people closer naturally. Also, it’s important to show genuine interest in others—when you listen carefully and respond thoughtfully, people will notice your kindness. Keep in mind that forming strong connections doesn’t happen overnight, so don’t be discouraged.
Hope these tips help, and soon you’ll feel part of the group!
Best wishes,
Li Hua
I thought they would walk away or tell me to leave. What I did not expect was that Katrina immediately grabbed a small piece of tofu and eat it. And I most certainly did not expect her to encourage the rest of the table to try my lunch. My new friends were going on about how lucky I was that my mom took the time to prepare a cooked meal for me. They were surprised by the fact that tofu could actually taste good. While I didn’t get to eat any of my mom’s fried tofu, I was full of pride and gratitude.
When I arrived home, my mom asked how my day went. Answering with a simple “Good,” I pulled out my lunch box from my bag. “I’m sorry, but I didn’t have time to buy bread or ham yesterday.” But when she noticed that the container was empty, she hesitated before asking “How was the food ” I paused a moment before I replied, “Perfect, mom. If it’s not too much trouble, can I still have fried tofu for lunch tomorrow ” (161 words)

【36题详解】 根据首句“Many senior high students share the same goal: improving their English language skills.”可知,文章开篇抛出一个“共同愿望”;空后“Here’s a step-by-step approach that works for everyone.” F项“While learning English can be challenging, the right approach helps.”恰好完成这一让步—转折功能,与后文解决方案形成“问题—对策”呼应,逻辑最顺滑。故选F。
【37题详解】 本段小标题为“Know about your purpose”,段内先分述“学困生”与“尖子生”各自的目的,空处应是对“明确目的”之重要性的总结。E项“Having a strong‘why’ keeps you going when challenges appear.”
G项“For top students, it could involve class debates or presentations in English.”
下文出现“Take advantage of language-learning apps…build daily habits”“after breakfast / after lunch / after dinner”等关键词,核心概念是“把学习内容拆成每日固定微习惯”。A项“Fall into daily habits.”(养成日常习惯)用极简形式概括本段主旨,且“habits”与段内“keep the habits you’ve formed”原词复现,锁定度最高。故选A。
C项“This builds confidence and keeps you going.”中“this”指代前述庆祝行为,“builds confidence / keeps you going”分别对应“心理正反馈”与“持续行动力”,与段末“a step toward success”形成因果链。故选C。

M: Hello, everyone. Before tonight’s news let me tell you some changes to our regular programs. Apologies to listeners looking forward to Writers’ World and our interview with Francis on how to get ideas for your next novel. We’ve had to rearrange this interview for next week as Francis is attending a book signing at a bookstore. Instead, we’ll be talking with an expert about how you can get your next book published on the Internet. On Thursday at 8:00 p.m., we have Sports Night as usual. Most of the football games from last Saturday were cancelled due to the terrible weather, so there are no reports on those matches. But our experts will be looking forward to seeing this Saturday’s matches and will predict results as usual. And finally, our reporter Sally Williams will be in town next Friday morning. She’ll be interviewing people for our weekly programme Money Matters, starting from 10:00 p.m., not the usual 9:00 p.m.. That’s all for the changes.
