Have you ever grown a plant like tomatoes and beans that you can eat at home It is called (被称为) homegrown produce (自产农产品), because you can grow it at your home.
You don’t need lots of space (空间) to grow produce. You can grow it in a pot (锅) or in a window box. It’s just as good and just as fresh (新鲜的).
You don’t have to wait for it to come on a boat or a plane for a long time. You can just go to your gardens and pick (摘) a load (批) of fresh peppers or tomatoes anytime. Think about what you can do with your homegrown produce. You can roast it or toast it. You can bake it or put it in a pie. Anyway, you can cook it in any way you like.
Homegrown produce is fresh! Eating fresh produce is very important. You and your family can eat the green produce that you grow in the garden. That is good for your health.
But how do people have more fresh produce to eat Some people like a program (项目) called Plant a Row (行,排). Here is how this program works.
People in this program usually plant two or more rows of plants. They plant one crow of beans for their family and they plant the other row to give to a food bank (食物赈济处). If people don’t have enough food to eat, they can go to the food bank and get some food from others for free. Nowadays, some schools join the program, students can grow their own produce at school. They will eat the fresh food, take some home and give some food to the food bank.
If your class plants a garden, you will need some useful tools (工具). And your teacher may need to help you with the work, take care of your garden and wait for the produce to grow, you will get more than you think.
Growing fresh produce is a big job. You must wait for it to grow, but don’t give up! People will thank you for helping them eat healthily.

Why do plants grow in some places and not in others Some lands have so many plants. 58
To grow, plants need some things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. 59 In very dry parts of the earth only some unusual plants can grow. That’s why dry deserts (沙漠) everywhere have almost no trees or grass. Plants must also have a place to put down their roots (根) and grow. 60 If the town is on hard land, the plants here only can find the soil (土) between the cracks of stones to grow in.
61 What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach (沙滩) A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand (沙子). 62 Even if (即使) the weather is warm enough and we water the plants every day, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no food for plants.
A.Plants also need water.
B.But most plants won’t grow.
C.Try to take good care of plants.
D.But some don’t have any plants at all.
E.They find it difficult to grow on hard land.
F.You need to help to water plants every day.

Trees clean the air, soil and water, making the Earth a better place for us to live in. Everyone should try their best to protect trees.
First, try to save trees in the area where you live. Generally, large, old trees can better help improve the environment than small, young trees. That’s why we should save as many older trees as possible. When you see a tree getting cut down, try to find out why. Sometimes trees are destroyed or diseased (被破坏或患病), so they need to be cut down. Otherwise, it’s still possible to save the tree. Planting enough new trees can also help. You should plant trees that are native (本地的) to your area so that they can grow big enough easily to clean the air and water.
Second, change your living habits. People cut down millions of trees each year to keep the paper industry (造纸工业) going, so using fewer paper products in your daily life can help save trees. For example, use cloth towels instead of paper towels. If you must use paper products, always buy the recycled ones. Eating less beef can also help protect trees. It may seem strange to most people, but you should know that people are cutting down rainforest trees so that people can have land to keep more cattle (牛).
Trees are one of the oldest living things on our Earth. It takes a very long time for trees to grow. Without trees, our lives will be difficult. So let’s work together to protect trees.
