Have you ever imagined how New Year’s Eve would look in other countries Listed below are some unique New Year traditions around the world.
Breaking Dishes at a Neighbor’s Door
An odd Danish New Year tradition is throwing dishes at a neighbor’s door. Strangely, this makes them happy instead of annoying them. The family with the tallest tower of broken plates, glasses, cups and other crockery is considered to be the luckiest person because it symbolizes their large number of loyal friends.
Talking to Spirits
Talking to spirits is a part of Mexican belief. Mexicans strongly believe that they can communicate with the souls of their dead loved ones. New Year’s Eve is considered the best time to communicate with dead spirits to convey a message or ask for guidance. And this is not done at home on an individual basis but a legal Mexican practice.
Eating Grapes at Midnight
In Spain, the countdown to the New Year is a unique experience. As the clock strikes midnight, people quickly eat 12 grapes, one for each ringing sound. Each grape represents a month of the year, and consuming them all is said to bring good luck in the coming months.
Throwing flowers into the ocean
In Brazil, New Year’s Eve is celebrated with great passion on the beaches. Many people wear white, which is believed to bring peace and good fortune. At midnight, they make offerings to the goddess of the sea, by throwing flowers into the ocean.
21.What does breaking dishes at a neighbor’s door represent in Denmark
A.Power. B.Wealth.

Most have probably heard of Henry David Thoreau and his book Walden, even though his message of simplicity may sound outdated. Nowadays, smartphones flood us with text messages. Many consumers are buying the latest digital devices, from tablets and fitness trackers to commercial drones (无人机). Simple living seems to be a thing of the past.
Thoreau would beg to differ. As a writer who advocated the value of simplicity almost two centuries ago, he was a contrarian (叛逆者) for his time. He lived during the height of the Industrial Age, distinguished by the rise of large factories, expanding urban developments, and powerful machines.
Turned off by the constant busyness of this time, Thoreau withdrew from city life to live alone in the woods. He brought with him only the necessities of life and wrote about this adventure in his book Walden. In the book, Thoreau is basically making a philosophical statement. We are not living meaningful lives due to modern technology. We created powerful machines to make life more convenient. Unfortunately, these machines have done the opposite. In his words, “men have become the tools of their tools”.
That is to say, we are not the ones controlling technology. Technology is controlling us. Every few minutes, smartphones may distract us with messages. At least half of Americans check their phones several times an hour. Meanwhile, information overload from social media can weaken our concentration and heighten confusion.
When technology causes that much distraction and confusion, it may be healthy to simplify life by reducing technology overuse. Personally, I’ve done so in two ways. First, I use very little data on my phone and keep the apps on it to a minimum. Most time, I only use my phone to call or text. Second, I quit most social media. Sure, those two things aren’t as extreme as Thoreau withdrawing into the woods. Nevertheless, they’re realistic moves I can make toward living a more meaningful life.
24.Which statement would Thoreau probably agree with
A.Technology holds back our ambition.
B.Technology is key to a meaningful life.
C.Simplicity is outdated in modern times.
D.Simplicity is possible in a tech-driven world.
25.Thoreau escaped to the woods because ________.
A.he was abandoned by society B.he enjoyed adventures in the forest
C.he tried to prove his independence D.he was fed up with busy industrial life
26.Why are smartphones and social media mentioned in Paragraph 4
A.To discuss the effect of modernization.
B.To illustrate men’s heavy reliance on tools.
C.To highlight the extensive use of technology.
D.To show the convenience of technological tools.
27.What does the author think of his ways of simplifying life
A.Amusing. B.Exciting. C.Satisfying. D.Challenging.

Nature was Chen Rui’s “childhood home”. The 37-year-old researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Zoology was not able to talk until he was 4 years old. He didn’t have friends around his age, which led him to turn his attention to nonhuman things around him. He became fascinated by the world of insects. “The happiest time of my childhood was in the farm fields. I squatted there, observing the activities of insects, including ants building their homes and dragonflies flying low. I had so many questions about their activities and was full of curiosity about this world,” says Chen.
The experiences in his childhood planted a seed deep in his heart. Decades later, he’s a scholar who has engaged in life-science investigations in nearly 100 countries and regions on five continents. He has found around 100 new species, living and extinct. “I was ‘healed’ by nature,” he says. “I wanted to grow up to share the power of nature with more young people and to popularize understanding of animals, including insects.”
He has ever visited the Amazon rainforest several times, trying to discover new species. One insect variety he found was leaf-cutter ants, a species that shows powerful cooperation and farming abilities. He is impressed by their close coordination. He observed that the ants are divided into different groups that are respectively responsible for cutting leaves, transporting harvested pieces, clearing obstacles out of the way, guarding the colony and taking care of the young. “Several million ants can live in one nest, but their activities are very orderly,” says Chen.
Chen points out that leaf-cutter ants are not the only species to possess magical abilities. “If we humans believe we are the smartest beings in the world, we may be constrained by this preconception. If we are instead humble and regard all other beings as our teachers, we can gain boundless wisdom,“ he says.
28.The underlined word “seed” in paragraph 2 refers to___________.
A.Interest in farmland B.Passion for studying insects
C.Dream of becoming a scholar D.Curiosity about the Amazon rainforest
29.Which aspect of leaf-cutter ants impresses Chen Rui
A.Their orderly teamwork. B.Their daily activities.
C.Their farming ability. D.Their unique transportation.
30.What does Chen Rui expect people to do
A.Explore the world of science. B.Apply theories to our lives.
C.Protect nonhuman things around us. D.Take inspiration from other species.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.The Joys of Childhood in the Fields. B.Chen Rui: A Person Cured by Nature.
C.Chen Rui’s Adventures in the Amazon. D.Leaf-Cutter Ants: An Amazing Species.

For many students, math is a tough mut to crack, often causing confusion and frustration. However, : reseztiers are offering new solutions by applying eye-tracking technology to revolutionize how math is again and learned.
Eye-tracking uses non-invasive devices made up of three main components: an infrared (红外线) Egist source, a high-speed camera, and a processor equipped with specialized software. The infrared Egra. which is invisible to humans, ensures students remain unaware of the tracking process and behave satizzally. As the camera captures re flections from the eye, the processor analyzes the data to determine size the subject is looking, how long their gaze stays, and which objects draw their attention. Dr. IrinaKlizieae, a professor at Kaunas University of Technology, explains that this technology allows esezciters to explore how students engage cognitively (认知绝) with math problems rather than just focusing on the final answers.
By studying how long students' eyes stay on the specific parts of a problem, researchers can ideatify the precis e concepts that canse confusion. For example, if a student spends an unusually long time on a spectfic equation or symbol, it suggests they are struggling to understand it. Teachers can use these insegists to provide targeted explanations, helping students focus on their weak points and improve me m eastending.
Eye-tracking also helps redesign learning materials by generating heat maps—visual representations that show where students focus their attention most. These maps caable educators to adjust content layouts to make critical in formation more noticeable. As Paskovske, a PhD student working with Dr. Kliziene, notes, “If students skip over an important part, the material can be rearranged to draw their neation back to it. ”
D.spite its benefits, eye-tracking technology cannot provide a complete picture of the learning process. Learning involves various cognitive and behavioral elements that cannot be captured through eye movements alone. For this reason, teachers and researchers are encouraged to use eye-tracking in combanation with other methods, soch as verbal reports and performance assessments, to fully understand students' learning experiences and find better ways to support their progress.
32.Why is infrared light used in eye-tracking research
A.To ensure students behave normally. B.To reduce the impact of room lighting.
C.To avoid affecting participants' vision. D.To enhance the accuracy of visual data.
33.What should teachers do if a student's gaze remains on a problem for a long time
A.Offer clearer explanations. B.Change the lesson contents.
C.Ail d more practice questions. D.Adopt more interactive activities.
34.How does eye-tracking help teachers improve learning materials
A.By replacing confusing instructions. B.By collecting feedback from students.
C.By using brighter colors to draw attention. D.By highlighting the most concerned parts.
35.What is implied in the last paragraph
A.Math learning requires consistent efforts. B.Multiple tools are needed to study learning.
C.Eye-tracking technology needs further testing. D.Verbal reports are more effective than eye-tracking.
七选五(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It is no secret that social media is harmful to everyone for many reasons: from general internet safety, to causing insecurities or becoming a major distraction. 36 Social media can have a large impact on people’s perspectives, opinions and the way they view the world — especially teenagers.
In recent years, social media creators have done a really effective job of creating algorithms (算法) that can keep track of what you engage with, and provide more content based on your preferences and interests. 37 Exposure to only one perspective in the long run can lead to what are called echo chambers, or situations in which one’s beliefs are constantly supported by the people around them, rather than hearing other opinions.
38 By only being exposed to people who agree with you, you are prevented from considering other perspectives, which perpetuates (使持续) close-minded attitudes. Since social media users are used to seeing content they agree with, the first opinion that they see on a new issue is the one they are most likely to agree with, despite not hearing opposing thoughts. 39
Recently, the term “chronically online takes” has resurfaced on social media. This concept refers to opinions that only seem to exist online, and lack the support of real world experience.
40 In fact, chronically online takes are problematic themselves, successfully weakening actual issues that should be called out.
A.This fails to show respect for your privacy.
B.This ensures that you continue using social media.
C.Usually, it takes the form of calling things problematic.
D.However, the negatives of social media go even deeper than that.
E.The key issue is that people are content with being told what to think.
F.The problem with echo chambers is that they discourage critical thinking.
G.Echo chambers increase social media users’ impatience and kills their creativity.

In modern life, the Internet has become an important part of our daily routine. It offers us a wealth of information at our fingertips. We can quickly search for knowledge, news, and educational resources. Moreover, it enables seamless communication with people worldwide through emails and social media.
However, the Internet also has drawbacks. There is a lot of false information online, which may mislead us. Additionally, excessive use of the Internet can lead to addiction, affecting our study, work, and even physical and mental health.
In my view, we should make good use of the Internet while being cautious. We need to learn to distinguish between right and wrong information and control our online time.
附:听力原文
1.【原文】M: Did you see Coco My sister and I can’t find her anywhere. I’m afraid that she’ll get hit by a car if she runs into the road.
W: You mean your little dog No, I haven’t seen her.
2.【原文】M: You shouldn’t feed bread to the ducks. It isn’t good for them.
W: But at least they have something to eat.
M: In fact, they eat insects, water creatures and seeds — and I’ve seen some people try to give them chocolate. It’s bad for ducks as well.
3.【原文】W: Marc, we urgently need to change the Internet service provider. It takes ages to download a file, which makes it impossible to work at home.
M: But I just paid the bill for the next six months. I’ll call them now. Maybe they can solve this kind of problem if we complain.
4.【原文】W: Li Ming, what should I do if I see somebody fighting in the street
M: You can dial 110 to report to the police. What telephone number should you dial in that case in the US
W: 911.
5.【原文】M: I noticed you haven’t been active on social media lately. Is everything all right
W: Yes, but I decided to take a break. It wasted too much time.
M: I understand social media can be a bit much sometimes, but it’s handy for keeping in touch with people.
6-7.【原文】W: Have you heard that news An industrial robot accidentally caused a bad injury to a worker at a vegetable processing center.
M: Yes. It’s reported that a male worker suffered head and chest injuries.
W: How did that happen Isn’t it an Al-powered robot
M: Well, the machine’s sensors are designed to identify boxes. The security video suggested that the man had moved near the robot with a box in his hands and this could have caused the machine’s reaction.
W: Oh, that’s terrible. I hope we don’t have to face any trouble as the AI continues to develop.
M: You can put this case in your project report.
8-9.【原文】W: Look at this animal. It’s really cute. Is it a cat
M: Not really. It’s the palace cat. It looks like a cat and is of a similar size, but it’s not the most friendly creature in the world. In fact, it is very aggressive and makes a perfect hunter. Unfortunately, the number of palace cats is decreasing rapidly.
W: Poor little thing. Why is that
M: Agricultural activities, mining and hunting are all the main causes that contribute to their low numbers. They are also killed in wolf and fox traps. Despite international trade limits and legal protection in some countries, they are frequently killed for their fur.
10-12.【原文】W: Hey, Tony. Do you often watch videos on Xiaohongshu
M: Sometimes. They often ask people to give the thumbs-up. Speaking of this, does the thumbs-up sign mean something positive in your country
W: No. In Thailand, it means you’re making fun of someone. What about in your country, in America
M: In America, it is a sign of agreement. Do you know any other meanings of gestures in different countries
W: Yes, they are really important during traveling abroad. The OK gesture means money in Japan. It looks rude in Brazil and Germany. In France, it means figure “zero”.
M: That’s really surprising. Once I read in a newspaper, it means disagreement if you nod your head. When you shake your head, it means agreement with you.
W: That’s weird. Have you ever heard that students aren’t allowed to answer questions unless they reach out their forefingers
M: It’s unbelievable. It makes me confused.
13-16.【原文】W: Bruce, is the animal in the shots red squirrel
M: Good eye. I shot this set of photos last weekend in my garden.
W: You’re so lucky to see a red squirrel. I know the red squirrel is Britain’s only native squirrel and its number is decreasing in the wild.
M: That’s right. A two thousand and seven survey found that after gray squirrels an exotic species were introduced into Britain. Their numbers has been decreasing from three point five million to about twenty five thousand. The disease gray squirrels carry could cause the death of red squirrels.
W: That’s one point, but their decline in numbers actually related to the shrinking amount of nuts, red squirrels’ primary food source.
M: You seem to know a fair bit about red squirrels.
W: Well, until fifteen I lived with my grandpa on his farm. Grandpa loves this beautiful creature very much and I’ve learned a lot from him. By the way, you must have been practicing for thousands of times to take such wonderful photos.
M: Actually I only practice a few times and used just a secondhand camera. It is my great tutor who helps me in my shooting.
W: Then he would be so proud of you.
17-20.【原文】M: Nature and technology often seem to work against each other. It cannot be denied that the rise of modern technology has often come at the cost of the natural world. However, it’s sometimes possible for the two sides to exist in harmony. Actually, many of the world’s greatest inventions have been inspired by nature. For example, the Wright brothers, American aircraft engineers, took inspiration from the flight of birds, while underwater sound wave technology was inspired by the way whales and dolphins communicate. Meanwhile, robotics engineers often draw inspiration from the animal kingdom to create robots that can deal with challenging environments. It’s not just animals that have inspired useful inventions. The University of Hong Kong developed a tiny, energy-efficient machine. It was inspired by the design of tree seeds. Other plant-inspired inventions include green plastic and life-saving medicine. Like many people, I feel it’s time for technology to “return the favor” now. That is why I’m currently studying to become an environmental engineer. My dream is one day to create an invention that will significantly help deal with climate change.
