Qingming Festival (Tomb Sweeping Day) is a traditional Chinese festival for families to show respect to their ancestors. People visit their ancestors’ grave sites (祖先墓地) and offer food, drinks and flowers. The festival falls on the fourth day of April this year. There are some Chinese poems that offer clues about Chinese festivals through ancient expressions. Here we look at one of them.
Mourning Day Drizzling rain falls like tears on the Mourning Day, The mourner’s heart is going to break on his way. Where can a wine shop be found to drown his sad hours A cowherd (牧童) points to a cot’ mid apricot flowers (杏花). (Translated by Xu Yuanchong, Chinese translator)
In China, around the time of Qingming Festival, there is more rain. The poet is
traveling far away from home on these rainy days. The rain and lonely walks add a sad mood(情绪) to this poem. The writer, Du Mu describes a rainy scene in a village in the first two lines. Then in the last two lines, the poet wants to find a place to take a rest, drink some wine and get rid of the sad mood. In the last line, a cowherd points to a direction, which vividly describes two people looking far ahead on the rainy day.
In this poem, Du Mu presents a village with apricot flowers around. He doesn’t describe its details on a rainy day but leaves room for the readers to imagine.
Qingming is not only a sad festival, but can also be a happy time for people to enjoy the spring and get closer to nature. Trees are green and flowers are blooming, so it’s a good time to be outside.

Have you ever worried about getting lost in a new place You might think, "I'll use a map on my phone!" But do you know what makes the map work It's all thanks to the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System(北斗导航卫星系统). It's a Chinese system that helps people find their way.
The BeiDou system started in 1994. Its first two parts, BDS-1 and BDS-2, were finished in 2000 and 2012. When BDS-3 was completed on July 31, 2020, China became the third country in the world to have its own global navigation satellite system. BDS-3 is special because of its "hybrid constellation" design(设计). It uses three different types of satellites(卫星) working together. This design is now a good example for other countries.
Now, China is planning to build the next BeiDou system. This new system will use better technology. The plan is:
