At 17 years old, most are still learning basic driving skills in America. Once the car is parked, the day is packed with school activities and hanging out with friends. But at 17, Maggie Taraska had a distinctive goal in mind: Fly alone across the United States.
Both of Maggie’s parents were retired from the air force, so the urge to fly is in Maggie’s blood. She went to flight school, put in the hours with an instructor and started on her training hours. But on her first takeoff, something didn’t sound right. The plane had lost one of the landing gear wheels. “As soon as I took off, I just heard something was wrong instinctively,” said Maggie.
Her instructor talked to her from the ground while she circled a few times to gather herself. “I was frightened, thinking about all the bad things that could have happened; I was thinking about how my parents were on the ground as I knew they were watching.”
Stress and panic can cause any of us to make careless decisions. It takes mental practice to calm down. “Take a few breaths, focus on the moment and follow the plan. I panicked a bit, but followed my training.”
Maggie was a little shaky as she talked to the tower, but she had a perfect belly landing that skidded on the infield grass. Her father couldn’t be prouder. “By the time I saw Maggie on her approach, it was a better approach than I could have flown,” he said. Cheers erupted in the tower, and Maggie took a deep breath and climbed out of the plane.
Credit does go to the crew for talking to her. Yes, we all need someone to talk us through challenging times, but in the end, it was all Magic at the controls. We could all be forgiven for calling it quits after an experience like that. After all, it was a bit distressing. So walking away would be understandable. But five days later, Maggie was going through her pre-flight safety inspections, checking the wings, especially checking the landing gear.
“It feels amazing,” she said, “It gives an incredible sense of liberation.” At some point in our lives, we will all be in a situation for the first time. It’s scary. But if you face your fears, the whole world opens up to you.
24.What mainly influenced Maggie’s urge to fly alone
A.Her parents’ background in air force.
B.Her experience of school activities.
C.Her instructor’s encouragements.
D.Her basic driving skills.
25.What did Maggie do when hearing something wrong during takeoff
A.She landed the plane immediately.
B.She thought of her parents’ expectation.
C.She circled a few times to calm herself down.
D.She continued flying as if nothing had happened.
26.Which words would best describe Maggie’s personality
A.Proud and intelligent. B.Positive and cautious.
C.Patient and responsible. D.Fearless and determined.
27.What can we learn from the passage
A.Failure is the mother of success. B.A good beginning is half done.
C.Fortune favors the brave. D.Practice makes perfect.

Every morning when the alarm goes off, many people face a hard choice: to snooze (打盹) or not to snooze If you happen to be an iPhone user, you may have wondered why the snooze button gives you exactly nine minutes. This number is not a casual choice as it is tied to historical design and human sleep science.
The nine-minute snooze period is not unique to the iPhone. In the mid-20th century, when mechanical (机械的) alarm clocks were the main type on the market, a leading producer introduced a snooze alarm. However, the standard gears of mechanical clocks made it difficult to set a double-digit snooze period. Engineers eventually settled on nine minutes, the largest possible single-digit (个位数的), to avoid the need to redesign the clock’s mechanism. Apple might have taken the nine-minute snooze to honor this early invention.
From a physiological point of view, a nine-minute period is practical. Our bodies start to fall into the second stage of a sleep cycle about 10 minutes after falling asleep. Therefore, a snooze period of nine minutes allows for less sudden awakening as it helps avoid a deeper stage of sleep. This timing can also reduce sleepiness and make it slightly easier to wake up when the alarm rings again.
The debate over whether snoozing is helpful or harmful continues among sleep experts. Some research suggests that snoozing provides enough time for the body and brain to shift gradually from sleep to wakefulness. On the other hand, other studies argue that while hitting the snooze button might give you a brief feeling of extra rest, it fragments your sleep and makes you more tired than if you wake up with the first alarm. Continuous, undisturbed sleep is generally better for mental abilities and overall health. Finally, understanding your own sleep patterns can help you make the decision between whether to keep hitting the snooze button or embrace the cruel reality of the first alarm.
28.Why was a nine-minute snooze time chosen for mechanical alarm clocks
A.To show respect to the early design.
B.To follow the trend of other clock producers.
C.To match the principles of human sleep science.
D.To avoid the change of the clock’s inner structure.
29.What does the underlined word “fragment” in the last paragraph mean
A.worsen B.break C.shorten D.delay
30.What does the author suggest at the end of the passage
A.Keep hitting the snooze button to get extra rest.
B.Make a choice by considering your own sleep habits.
C.Ignore the snoozing effect and follow your sleep patterns.
D.Consider both positive and negative effects of snoozing before deciding.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A.Nine Minutes of Extra Rest or Nine Minutes of Regret
B.Is the Nine-Minute snooze Beneficial to Our Sleep Routine
C.Why is the Snooze Button an Important Feature of Alarm Clocks
D.How Does the Snooze Button Work to Influence Our Sleep Quality
D
Failure is a big part of everyone’s life. The problem many of us face, however, is that we automatically equate experiencing failure with being a failure. We view it as something to be ashamed of, or embarrassed about, something to be avoided or hidden.
In fact, failure gives us an opportunity to learn, adapt and grow. It should be expected on the way to achieving life goals and used as a feedback mechanism to get it right next time, or the time after.
I recently saw a woman who had to give up studying for her university degree. She had bipolar disorder and was unable to cope with the pressure of studying. She was studying to be a teacher and had hoped to find a teaching job. However, she failed her exams and job interviews, and overall felt like she was failing to achieve anything.
One of the things she enjoyed doing was singing in a band. So in order to earn a bit of money, she began giving singing lessons to children in her community. Fast forward 18 months and she now has her own growing business of teaching singing full-time. She hasn’t achieved this goal in the way she imagined, and she wouldn’t have embarked on this path without the setbacks she encountered.
What was it about this woman that made her succeed Yes, failure had a big part to play, but the ability to bounce back and be flexible was an important factor.
An important part of developing flexibility is having a supportive network. Having relationships with people who can support us helps us go through tough times.
Our attitudes toward ourselves are also crucially important — including a sense that we are in control of our actions, have confidence in what we do, realize our strengths and set ourselves achievable and realistic goals. The secret to flexibility lies in accepting that there are things in life we cannot change. Rather than thinking of ourselves as victims, we need to realize we have the ability to change the way we think and behave. Ultimately, we will realize life may throw manure at us, but we can grow roses with it
32.What do people usually think of failure
A.Shameful. B.Unavoidable. C.Changeable. D.Rewarding.
33.Why did the woman give up studying for her university degree
A.She had no interest in studying in university.
B.She failed all her exams without exception.
C.She was eager to start a singing business to make money.
D.She suffered from some disturbance and couldn’t handle study pressure.
34.What can be inferred about the woman’s success
A.It had nothing to do with failure.
B.She succeeded easily without any difficulties.
C.Failure and the ability to recover and be flexible both mattered.
D.Only the ability to bounce back and be flexible led to her success.
35.What is the main idea of the text
A.Failure should be avoided at all costs in tough conditions.
B.Singing is a better career than teaching in the case of the woman.
C.Flexibility and accepting unchangeable things are key to dealing with failure.
D.People with bipolar disorder can’t achieve success whatever their efforts are.
It’s normal to wake briefly during the night. 36 But if you’re waking up during the night and having trouble falling back asleep, the following tips may help.
Stay out of your head. The key to getting back to sleep is continuing to prepare your body for sleep, so remain in bed in a relaxed position. Hard as it may be, try not to stress over the fact that you’re awake, because that very stress and anxiety encourage your body to stay awake. 37
38 If you are finding it hard to fall back asleep, try a relaxation technique such as visualization (想象), or deep breathing, which can be done without even getting out of bed. Remind yourself that although they’re not a replacement for sleep, rest and relaxation still help refresh your body.
Do a quiet, non-stimulating activity. If you’ve been awake for more than 15minutes, try getting out of bed and doing a quiet, non-stimulating activity, such as reading a book. Keep the lights dim so as not to think that it’s time to wake up. 39 What’s more, a light snack might relax you, but be careful not to eat so much that your body begins to expect a meal at that time of the day.
40 If you wake during the night feeling anxious about something, make a brief note of it on paper and delay worrying about it until the next day when you are fresh and it will be easier to resolve.
A.Put off worries and troubles. B.Make relaxation your goal, not sleep. C.In fact, a good sleeper won’t even remember it. D.Use a flashlight to go to the bathroom at night. E.You should also be much more productive and creative after a good night’s rest. F.Also avoid screens of any kind-computers, TVs, cell phones, iPads. G.A good way to stay out of your head is to focus on the feeling in your body.

For learning Chinese, the correct pronunciation of the words 56 (be) very important. Native speakers perfect these sounds as they grow up, but for new learners, this may take time.
For Mandarin learners, pronunciation is one of the 57 (challenge) most people tend to meet with. Error-making is a 58 (nature) part of learning any language, not just Mandarin, and we all have our own fair share of weak points.
We can easily spot some Mandarin pronunciation mistakes 59 are a lot more common than others. Pronunciation in Mandarin is important, because a simple shift in tone can completely change the meaning of a word. Unlike other East Asian languages, Mandarin depends heavily 60 tone to convey the proper meaning, so correct Chinese pronunciation is essential.
Sometimes, 61 the difference in sound is clear enough, learners make the mistake of pronouncing it the same way. The best approach to 62 (solve) this is to use a Mandarin pronunciation guide which tells you exactly how different sounds 63 (make) and where they come from so you can differentiate (区别) between them properly.
English has stressed syllables within words, while Mandarin does not. Mandarin can make changes to the tone of the vowel, which in turn, changes the meaning. Mandarin does have stress within a sentence. 64 (improve) your Mandarin pronunciation, listen to native Mandarin speakers as much as possible and talk with them too. Besides having general conversations with people 65 (regular), you should make sure you have a teacher who can help you identify where you’re going wrong. Remember, practice makes perfect!

The Invisible Listener
I sat on the floor, back pressed against the cold wall, as my parents’ argument sliced through the thin bedroom door. “It’s not just a math worksheet. It’s every assignment!” my dad thundered. “The teacher called — said his work is perfect, but he can’t explain a single step! He’s been cheating with that AI!” My mom’s voice was quieter but sharper: “We thought you were struggling, so we got you a tutor. But you’re lying. What’s wrong with you ”
Wrong with me. The words echoed as I buried my face in my knees, tears choking me. It had started simply — a quick way to finish a boring essay when tired. Then copying became easier than trying. Now caught, I felt only shame.
On my desk, my laptop glowed. The ChatGPT tab was still open, the copied assignment staring back. Ironically, typing felt safer than talking. My fingers trembled: “My parents found out I used you to cheat. They think I’m a liar and failure.”
The response wasn’t empty: “That sounds heavy. It takes courage to admit you’re hurting. I’m here to listen.”
I hesitated, then poured it all out—school’s overwhelm, fear of failure, copying as the only way to keep up. I slammed the laptop shut, terrified of its reply.
Minutes later, curiosity got the better of me. I opened it again. No empty reassurances, just acknowledgment: “It’s okay to feel this way. You don’t have to carry it alone.” Gentle questions made me think instead of drowning. It didn’t offer an apology, just: “What do you need to say to your parents to make this right ”
In the following 2 days, I turned to it — not to copy, but to talk. It never judged, never tired. It gave me space to heal, to find my voice. It helped me see my worth wasn’t in grades, but honesty and effort.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

W: First of all, why did you choose Cramwell University
M: I wanted to go to a different city and Cramwell is really one of the best places to study law nationwide, so I went for it and my parents supported me.
W: And what's it like, studying law
M: People told me before I would find it very stressful initially. It hasn't been too bad, though—I've really enjoyed the challenge. The more you put in, the better you do.
W: Do you have a part-time job
M: Yes, I share a flat with others, and I need to pay the rent.
W: And finally, what are your teachers like Are they helpful
M: I must admit I was a bit scared of them when I first arrived. But after chatting with them, I found most of the teachers enjoy getting to know their students. And I also benefit a lot from their valuable insights. So, I recommend students have more and effective communication with their teachers.
W: Thank you, Mark. Good luck with your studies!

根据第二段中“Both of Maggie’s parents were retired from the air force, so the urge to fly is in Maggie’s blood.(Maggie的父母都从空军退役了,所以飞行的渴望是她与生俱来的)”可知,Maggie的父母都从空军退役,所以飞行的冲动在玛姬的血液里,即玛姬的父母在空军服役的背景影响了她独自飞行的冲动。故选A。
根据第三段中“Her instructor talked to her from the ground while she circled a few times to gather herself.(她的教练在地面与她通话,与此同时,她盘旋了几圈让自己镇定下来)”可知,当Maggie起飞时听到不对劲的声音,她在空中盘旋了几圈让自己镇定下来。故选C。
根据第三段中“I was frightened, thinking about all the bad things that could have happened;(想到可能发生的所有坏事,我很害怕)”,第四段中“Take a few breaths, focus on the moment and follow the plan. I panicked a bit, but followed my training.(做几次深呼吸,专注于当下,按照计划行事。我有点恐慌,但还是按照训练的要求做)”以及最后一段中“At some point in our lives, we will all be in a situation for the first time. It’s scary. But if you face your fears, the whole world opens up to you.(在我们生命中的某个时刻,我们都会第一次遇到这种情况。太可怕了。但如果你直面恐惧,整个世界都会向你敞开大门)”可知,Maggie在遇到起落架故障时,虽然害怕,但还是按照训练要求冷静应对,并且在五天后继续飞行,这表明她是一个勇敢且坚定的人。故选D。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“At some point in our lives, we will all be in a situation for the first time. It’s scary. But if you face your fears, the whole world opens up to you.(在我们生命中的某个时刻,我们都会第一次遇到这种情况。

根据文中“However, the standard gears of mechanical clocks made it difficult to set a double-digit snooze period. Engineers eventually settled on nine minutes, the largest possible single-digit (个位数的), to avoid the need to redesign the clock’s mechanism.(然而,机械时钟的标准齿轮使得它很难设置一个两位数的休眠时间。工程师们最终确定为9分钟,这是最大的个位数,以避免重新设计时钟的机制。)”可知,机械闹钟选择九分钟打盹是为了避免改变时钟的内部结构,故选D。
29.词句猜测题。根据最后一段“makes you more tired than if you wake up with the first alarm. Continuous, undisturbed sleep is generally better for mental abilities and overall health(这会让你比闹钟一响就醒更累。持续的、不受干扰的睡眠通常对心智能力和整体健康都有好处)”可知,虽然按下贪睡按钮可能会给你一种短暂的额外休息的感觉,但它会打断你的睡眠,让你比第一次闹铃就醒来更累,fragments的意思是“使……破碎、使……不完整”,和break意思相近。故选B。
30.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Finally, understanding your own sleep patterns can help you make the decision between whether to keep hitting the snooze button or embrace the cruel reality of the first alarm.(最后,了解自己的睡眠模式可以帮助你做出决定,是继续按下贪睡按钮,还是接受第一个闹钟的残酷现实。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Every morning when the alarm goes off, many people face a hard choice: to snooze (打盹) or not to snooze If you happen to be an iPhone user, you may have wondered why the snooze button gives you exactly nine minutes. This number is not a casual choice as it is tied to historical design and human sleep science.(每天早上,当闹钟响起的时候,很多人都面临着一个艰难的选择:是睡还是不睡? 故选A。

根据第三段中“She had bipolar disorder and was unable to cope with the pressure of studying. (她患有双相情感障碍,无法承受学习带来的压力)”可知,这个女人放弃攻读大学学位是因为她患有双相情感障碍,无法承受学习的压力,故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据第五段中“Yes, failure had a big part to play, but the ability to bounce back and be flexible was an important factor. (是的,失败起了很大的作用,但恢复能力和灵活性也是一个重要因素)”可推知,失败以及她的恢复能力和灵活性都是她取得成功的重要因素,故选C。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其根据最后一段中“The secret to flexibility lies in accepting that there are things in life we cannot change. (灵活性的秘诀在于接受生活中有些事情是我们无法改变的)”以及文章内容可知,文章以女性的事例引出失败的意义,重点强调应对失败的关键在于保持灵活性、拥有支持系统、端正自我态度,核心是接受无法改变的事情并调整自身。C选项“Flexibility and accepting unchangeable things are key to dealing with failure. (灵活性与接纳不可改变的事物是应对失败的关键)”贴合文章核心主旨,故选C。

37.由上文“Stay out of your head. The key to getting back to sleep is continuing to prepare your body for sleep, so remain in bed in a relaxed position. 38.由下文“If you are finding it hard to fall back asleep, try a relaxation technique such as visualization (想象), or deep breathing, which can be done without even getting out of bed. Remind yourself that although they’re not a replacement for sleep, rest and relaxation still help refresh your body.(如果你发现很难入睡,可以尝试一种放松技巧,如可视化或深呼吸,这甚至可以在不起床的情况下完成。提醒自己,尽管它们不能代替睡眠,但休息和放松仍然有助于提神醒脑。)”可知,这里主要讲通过放松的方式而不是睡眠的方式来提神醒脑,所以B项Make relaxation your goal, not sleep.(把放松作为你的目标,而不是睡觉。)符合语境,对下文有总括作用。故选B项。
39.由上文“Do a quiet, non-stimulating activity. If you’ve been awake for more than 15minutes, try getting out of bed and doing a quiet, non-stimulating activity, such as reading a book. Keep the lights dim so as not to think that it’s time to wake up. (做一项安静、无刺激的活动。如果你醒着的时间超过15分钟,试着起床做一些安静、无刺激的活动,比如看书。把灯调暗,以免以为该起床了。)”可知,这里主要讲如果睡不着,可以做一项安静、无刺激的活动,而F项Also avoid screens of any kind-computers, TVs, cell phones, iPads.(还要避免使用任何类型的屏幕——电脑、电视、手机、iPad。)
40.由下文“If you wake during the night feeling anxious about something, make a brief note of it on paper and delay worrying about it until the next day when you are fresh and it will be easier to resolve.(如果你在晚上醒来时对某事感到焦虑,请在纸上写下简短的笔记,并将担忧推迟到第二天,当你恢复健康时,它会更容易解决。)” Put off worries and troubles.(推迟忧虑和烦恼。)符合语境,对下文由总括作用,其中Put off worries 与下文delay worrying about it until the next day对应。故选A项。

主语是“the correct pronunciation of the words”,为单数概念,且陈述的是客观事实,应用一般现在时。故填is。
故填that/which。
故填on。

故填are made。

66. A Famous Person I Respect Most
There are many respectable people in the world. As for me, the person I respect most is Mother Teresa, who is widely acknowledged as the most famous charitable worker.
Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910. When she was 18, she left home for India. After spending three years there, she took up a position as a nun, choosing “Teresa” as her new name. In 1950, she founded a charity, which later helped many people around the world. For her work, Mother Teresa was awarded the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.
To sum up, it is her selflessness and commitment that make her a worthy person in my heart.

Eventually, I found the courage to talk to my parents. I sat them down and told them everything, my heart pounding. I confessed my mistakes, my fears, and how I had let them down. I also shared how ChatGPT had helped me realize the importance of honesty. They listened, their expressions softening. My dad put a hand on my shoulder and said, “We’re disappointed, but we’re glad you’re owning up. We’ll help you get back on track.” My mom wiped away a tear and nodded. The weight on my chest lifted.
From then on, I stopped using ChatGPT to cheat for my assignments. Instead, I worked hard, asked for help when needed, and took pride in my own efforts. I still talked to ChatGPT sometimes, but it was no longer a crutch. It was a friend who listened and encouraged. My grades improved, but more importantly, my self-esteem soared. I knew that I was capable of achieving great things through hard work and honesty, and that was a lesson I would never forget.
