Anyone complaining the loss of the true meaning of Christmas probably shouldn’t celebrate in China. Here, it’s mostly business as usual on the 25th. Vacation time won’t come until weeks later for China’s own winter holiday: Chinese New Year in mid-February. Santa exists primarily in malls, plus the occasional grocery store or cafe. Some members of the younger generation have started playing Secret Santa, while others have bought artificial trees for their homes and offices.
There is, however, one Christmas tradition that’s definitely Chinese: Apples. The Chinese word for apple, pingguo, sounds a lot like the Chinese word for Christmas Eve, ping’an ye, and, as such, a tradition has formed. While Americans shell out (支付) lots of US dollars for high-tech presents like iPhones and Xboxes, Chinese friends simply exchange apples.
I’m in an overlit fruit market in Hangzhou. Christmas music — though in Mandarin — is playing over the store loudspeakers. Staffers are wearing green aprons and red Santa caps. This is the most Christmas spirit I’ve seen outside Starbucks.
It’s an odd time to grocery shop — Saturday night, just before closing — but the store is full. Santa-capped employees hand bags of fruit to a stream of customers.
I walk past many tiny, apple-sized boxes. Some boxes are clear, except for the outlines of cute cartoon bears with tiny plastic ears popping up on top. Some boxes proclaim “Merry Christmas!” and “Happy New Year!” in English on their sides. Some apples aren’t in boxes at all, but are rather all tied up in festive pink and purple cellophane (玻璃纸).
I need to choose a more traditional Western package of red and green cardboard and I call over an employee for help: He’s dressed in head-to-toe Santa Claus clothes, complete with black boots and a fake beard.
“Merry Christmas!” I say, briefly forgetting that this particular Kris Kringle might not understand me.
When a friend once told me to bring apples to my first-ever Chinese dinner party, it seemed like a cheap offering until I saw the price: Nearly 70 RMB(over $10) for just a few of them. That’s not unbearably expensive, but the cost is comparable to produce we’d consider exotic (异乎寻常的) in the US.
Meanwhile, in the fruit market in my neighborhood, a woman in a Santa cap is ringing me up at the cashier.
“Merry Christmas,” I say, once again forgetting about the language barrier. Then I realize I don’t even know how to say Christmas in Mandarin. Instead, I fall back on my old faithful phrase, one which I hope will evoke what I mean: A big smile and “Xiexie, zaijian”

B. Santa exists originally in shopping malls, occasionally at the grocery store or cafe.

D. Staffers’ wearing green aprons and red Santa caps is the most Christmas spirit besides Starbucks.

A. Exchanging apples as Christmas gifts. B. Buying Christmas trees to decorate homes.
C. Choosing red and green packs. D. Wearing green aprons and red Santa caps.
45. What attitude does the author hold towards the Chinese tradition of Christmas
A. Indifferent. B. Neutral. C. Prejudiced. D. Tolerant.

What makes babies laugh It sounds like one of the most fun questions a researcher could investigate, but there’s a serious scientific reason why Caspar Addyman wants to find out.
He’s not the first to ask this question. The great psychologist(心理学家) of human development, Jean Piaget, thought that babies laughter could be used to see into their minds. Studying when babies laugh might therefore be a great way of gaining insight into how they understand the world, he reasoned. But although he suggested this in the 1940s, this idea remains to be properly tested. Despite the fact that some very famous investigators have studied the topic, it hasn’t been given enough attention by modern psychology.
Addyman, of Birkbeck, University of London, is out to change that. He believes we can use laughter to get at exactly how babies understand the world. He’s completed the world’s largest and most comprehensive survey of what makes babies laugh, presenting his initial results at the International Conference on Infant Studies, Berlin, last year. Via his website he surveyed more than 1,000 parents from around the world, asking them questions about when, where and why their babies laugh.
The results are heart-warming. A baby’s first smile comes at about six weeks, their first laugh at about three and a half months. Peekaboo(躲猫猫) is a sure-fire favourite for making babies laugh, but tickling(挠痒痒) is the single most reported reason why babies laugh.
Importantly, from the very first chuckle(低声轻笑), the survey responses show that babies are laughing with other people, and at what they do. The mere physical sensation of something being ticklish isn’t enough. Nor is it enough to see something disappear or appear suddenly. It’s only funny when an adult makes these things happen for the baby. This shows that way before babies walk, or talk, they – and their laughter – are social. If you tickle a baby they apparently laugh because you are tickling them, not just because they are tickled.
What’s more, babies don’t tend to laugh at people falling over. They are far more likely to laugh when they fall over, rather than someone else, or when other people are happy, rather than when they are sad or unpleasantly surprised. Although parents report that boy babies laugh slightly more than girl babies, both genders (性别) find mummy and daddy equally funny.
In spite of the scientific potential, baby laughter is “strangely ignored”, according to Addyman. Part of the reason is the difficulty of making babies laugh reliably in the lab, although he plans to deal with this in the next stage of the project. But partly the topic has been ignored, he says, because it isn’t viewed as a subject for “proper” science to look into. This is a prejudice Addyman hopes to overturn – for him, the study of laughter is certainly no joke.
46. The psychologist Jean Piaget held the belief that ________.
A. even a good joke could not be got across to babies
B. his theory about laughter would be proved in the end
C. studying babies’ laughter helped to know how they understand the world
D. babies’ laughter could be used to find out whether their brains functioned well
47. The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A. the present situation of Birkbeck B. the study conducted by Jean Padget
C. thinking little of modern psychology D. ignoring the research into babies’ laughter
48. The result of the survey undertaken by Addyman show that ________.
A. babies are likely to laugh at people falling over
B. babies are very fond of being tickled
C. babies’ first laugh comes at six weeks
D. babies and their laughter are social in a way
49. From the last paragraph, it can be concluded that for Addyman, __________.
A. babies’ laughter is well worth studying
B. nobody should play jokes on babies
C. babies’ laughter is not a real science subject
D. scientists can get reliable information only in the lab
50. Which best describe the writer’s attitude to the study of babies’ laughter
A. Admiring B. Fact-based
C. Doubtful D. One-sided
D
Many of us seem to have lives that follow a certain way. From kindergarten all the way to when we get married, every stage of our lives seems to be preset. And although this works well for a lot of people, according to British scholar Jay Shetty, there is no “right” schedule to live our lives by.
A few months ago, a video of Shetty’s speech “Before You Feel Pressure” became popular on the Internet across the world. In the video, he sends an important message that we should think “outside of the way” and have the courage to follow our hearts. As Shetty says in the video, we don’t have to get stressed and put ourselves in a race with our peers or judge our lives based on others’. “Everything in life happens according to our time, our clocks,” he says.
In his inspiring speech, Shetty points out that UK author J. K. Rowling got her famous “Harry Potter” series published at age 32, after being turned down by 12 publishers. Shetty also mentions that US actor Morgan Freeman didn’t get his big break until he was 52 years old. So we shouldn’t let anyone rush us.
As physicist Albert Einstein once said, “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that’s counted truly counts. The key to staying on our own tracks is to be patient and keep our own interest. ” In Australian nurse Bronnie Ware’s best-selling book “The Top Five Regrets of the Dying”, she recorded the dying regrets of her patients, and the top one on the list was: “I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the one others expected of me. ”
Indeed, we are all unique in our personalities and gifts, and there’s no perfect fit for all. We should listen to our inner voices and ignore what the world has taught us, and what we’ve picked up from people around us. “It is important to allow people to go back to being self-aware of their own interests, needs and concerns,” Shetty told the magazine. “It’s disconnecting from what ‘makes sense’ to what actually moves you and what makes sense internally (内在地). ”
51. What does Jay Shetty agree to
A. The stages of our lives should be preset.
B Few people have lives that follow a certain way.
C. All people live their lives according to schedules.
D. We can live our lives not according to the given way.
52. According to Jay Shetty’s video, people should _________.
A. put more pressure on themselves
B. adjust their lives based on others’
C. decide their lives in terms of actual cases
D. compete with those who are better than themselves
53. Shetty lists the famous people in his speech to show ________.
A. everyone can be a winner B. hard work is the key to success
C. great new life can begin anytime D. success does not happen in one’s youth
54. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Paragraph 4
A. Everything that’s counted truly counts.
B. One should live a life as expected by others.
C. We should count and analyze everything in life.
D. The top dying regret was not living in the way one wanted.
55. We can conclude from the last paragraph that _______.
A. people should never listen to others’ advice
B. we should follow the heart and do what we want to do
C. what makes sense should not be about what people care internally
D. being self-aware of interests, needs and concerns is not acceptable
V.阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
I'm no literary luddite (反对新技术的人). I bought an iPad with my first paycheck from my first full time job after I graduated college. But after two years of reading occasionally on the device, I gave it away to my brother. It just wasn't the right reading experience for me.
Technology lovers choose e-readers over books because e readers are more convenient. They're right. It is objectively easier to carry an 7oz. tablet with thousands and thousands of books at your fingertips than it is to carry five books in your bag (which is exactly what I did on vacation).
But I don't read for convenience. I read to learn more about the world and myself. I have made friends by seeing a book cover in a cafe and noticing that it was the same title that I was reading. I can trace my life by the books that have been my companions. When I open an old book and come across my previously scribbled notes — shaky ones when I've been reading on the subway, covered in sand if I read it at the beach, next to a train ticket if I was traveling — I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to re-read. It's just not enough to simply consuming the story, which is what e-readers are great for.
When I read paper books, I hold onto them for long periods of time. I just purchased a new bookshelf specially for my “to be read” pile. Once in a while, I go through the process of deciding which books to donate, but usually the idea of parting with a book feels like giving away a part of my soul.
Physical books may not be the most efficient medium, but they are the most meaningful. So keep your Kindle, by all means. But I'll be happy hoarding with my library.
56. Why did the author give his iPad to his brother (no more than 10 words)
57. What is the second paragraph mainly about (no more than 6 words)
58. Which word can take the place of the underlined word in paragraph 3 (1 word)
59. When the author has to give away some books, how does he feel about it (no more than 15 words)
60. Do you like e-readers or physical books Please explain your opinion. (no more than 25 words)(open)
