As one of the most popular destinations in the world, there is no shortage of things to do in Vancouver Island.
Fairmont Empress
Fairmont Empress opened its doors in 1908 and has been an elegant staple (贸易中心) in the downtown core since day one. It remains one of the top hotels in Victoria. That means it isn't exactly budget- friendly, so if you'd prefer to skip the tea and just stop into the hotel for a drink another time of day, that's welcome too
Castles
Craigdarroch Castle was built in 1890 by coal baron (大亨) Robert Dunsmuir. The stunning Victorian building features stained- glass windows, beautiful woodwork, and great views of the area. Another castle on Vancouver Island is Hatley Castle, which was built in1908 and the grounds feature over 15 kilometers of walking trails, a First Nations historical site, and a bird preserve.
Sheringham Point Lighthouse
Located on the south- western coast of Vancouver Island, halfway between Victoria and Port Renfrew, Sheringham Point Lighthouse is a great contrast to the crashing waves below and is one of the best things to see in the area. The lighthouse was built in 1912 and is a historical site in the area. There are even virtual historical tours you can take.
Victoria
Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, was founded in 1843 and is a hub of Canadian history. While in the heart of the city, explore Bastion Square (shops, restaurants, and bars galore), take a walk through Fan Tan ALley, which lays claim to being Canada's narrowest street, or take a tour

Forests play a crucial role in promoting health and well-being, but not all forests provide the same benefits. A large-scale international study, co-led by the University of Surrey and the University of Ghent, demonstrates how specific forest characteristics—— such as canopy density (树冠密度) and tree species diversity—— can affect various health outcomes.
The research investigated 164 forests across 5 European countries, offering valuable insights for forest management and urban planning. The study examined 7 ecological characteristics of forests and their influence on human health.
Tree species diversity was found to have a limited but positive effect on human health and well-being. Increasing tree species diversity is therefore considered a safe and beneficial intervention for forest managers, which also provides multiple co-benefits beyond human health, such as supporting associated non-tree biodiversity.
Forest structures—— particularly, the canopy structure—— were found to have the strongest health impact, both with their own benefits and disadvantages. Dense canopy reduces heat stress by providing more shade and creating a more stable microclimate, while also improving air quality by increasing leaf surface area for fine particulate matter deposition (细颗粒物沉积)—— both crucial elements in urban areas where heatwaves and airborne pollutants are more frequent.
On the other hand, a dense canopy can also increase the risk of Lyme disease— as ticks(蜱虫) like it in wet environment—— and lead to less light reaching the forest floor, which can slow the growth of medicinal plants, affecting their potential health benefits.
“ Our study shows that forests generally provide a mental health benefit, reducing anxiety and stress, regardless of their biodiversity or structure. Contact with forests could be prescribed (开处方) by the National Health Service (NHS), as research shows that NHS nature prescriptions are effective at improving mental health,” says Dr Melissa Marseille, a lecturer in Environmental Psychology.
28. Which factor determines the health benefits provided by a forest
A. The size of the forest. B. The history of the forest.
C. The height of the forest. D. The species diversity of the forest.
29. What is a benefit of dense forest canopy
A. It increases sunlight for forest plants.
B. It prevents all air pollutants effectively.
C. It lowers the risk of heat-related issues.
D. It reduces the sunlight that attracts ticks.
30. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A. The risk of Lyme disease.
B. Downside of thick canopy.
C. The growth of medicinal plants.
D. The potential health benefits of canopy.
31. What advice may Dr Melissa give
A. Including forest visits in mental health treatment plans.
B. Linking forest access to non-tree biodiversity plans.
C. Prioritizing forest biodiversity for anxiety reduction.
D. Expanding canopy coverage to maximize stress relief.

University of Hawaii scientists are among a team of researchers who have discovered an innovative way to help adapt food crops around the world to Earth's rapidly changing climate.A new study published in Nature Climate Change reveals how plant seed banks, home to millions of genetically diverse plants around the world, can help speed up the process of breeding (培育) crops better suited for climate change.
" Climate-driven pressures on food crops touch every country on our planet and this technique holds promise for making more use of our global seed banks," said co-author Michael Kantar of the UH Manoa College of tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience(CTAHR).
According to Kantar, plant seed banks are essential for protecting the genetic (基因的)diversity of food crops. These“living libraries” store seeds and other genetic material, providing a vital resource for plant breeders working to develop new crop varieties that have a range of characteristics from drought resistance to disease tolerance (忍耐力).
The researchers used sorghum (高粱), a grain grown for food, fuel, and livestock feed,to test a new method called environmental genetic selection. It combines DNA data with climate information to predict which plants are best suited for future conditions.
“ It can be applied to any crop that has the right data, including sorghum, barley, cannabis, pepper and dozens of other crops,” said Kantar.
The approach also saves time. Instead of testing thousands of plants in the field, scientists use a smaller, diverse“ mini-core” group to forecast how crops will perform in different environments. This helps breeders quickly select the best parents for new, climate-resilient varieties.
“ This method will help us keep pace with the hotter temperatures and increased risk of flooding from Earth's changing climate and help develop new varieties to ensure food security,” Kantar said.
Researchers discovered that nations with high sorghum use may need genetic resources from other countries to effectively adapt to climate change, stressing the value of global teamwork in securing the world's food supply.
32. What is the purpose of the study of University of Hawaii
A. To stop climate change. B. To understand plant seed banks.
C. To speed up crop harvest. D. To secure food supply.
33. Why are seed banks referred to as“ living libraries”
A . They replace traditional farming methods.
B. They provide genetic resources for new crops.
C. They store rare plants from around the world.
D. They protect crops from drought or disease.
34. Which word best describes environmental genetic selection
A. Productive. B. Unpractical. C. Inexpensive. D. Inconvenient.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Strategies for Improving Crop Yields
B. Innovative Methods for Storing Plant Seeds
C.“Living Libraries” That Fight Climate Change
D. The Role of Global Seed Banks in Agriculture

How to Stay Focused
Staying focused can help you complete a variety of professional and personal tasks, from studying for a test to finishing your work an hour early. There are various practical steps you can take to help yourself focus better.
Make a to-do list. Making a to-do list at the beginning of every day or week can make you feel more focused and positive to continue your work. You will feel more fulfilled when you check those tasks off your list and move on to the next one. 36
Organize your workspace. Having a clean space can help you focus and get your work done with much more concentration. 37 Clean off your desk to include only the things you need to work on, leaving just a few photos or souvenirs to help you relax a bit.
Give yourself a time limit for each task. 38 Next to each item on the list, write about how long it' ll take you to complete each task. Be realistic about this judgement. Then, try to complete each task within the range of each time limit.
Make time for breaks during the day. Though it may sound counter-intuitive (反直觉的)to add relaxation into your daily schedule, this step will actually help you stay focused.39 This will help you get more energetic to finish the task, give you a break to rest your eyes, and will give you some time to prepare for the next task ahead.
40 Many people incorrectly think that multi- tasking is great because it allows you to deal with a variety of tasks at the same time. To the contrary, multi- tasking actually confuses your brain and slows you down, keeping you from being fully engaged in any one task.
A. Prioritize your tasks.
B. Multi- task less to make you focused.
C. This will also keep you focused on one task at a time.
D. Managing your time goes hand in hand with making a to-do list.
E. You should take at least a 5-10 minute break for every hour of work.
F. It's better to save the easier or more manageable tasks for the end of the day.
G. Remove anything that can take your attention away and isn't related to the task.

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
I've spent the past 20 years traveling to remote corners of this vast country as an explorer with a pen— initially hoping 56 (tell) China's story but ultimately living it; not only sharing it but also sharing in it; and not only witnessing but unintentionally becoming part of it.
I've discovered China is a country 57 deserts, mountains, forests and tundra are best explored on the backs of yaks, horses, elephants and ostriches. While too much of the world misunderstands too much of China, nobody in the world understands all of it—— or even close to enough of it— 58 (include) even Chinese people.
I was particularly honored wheat many overseas friends said my latest book, A Global Nomad's Journey Through China's Poverty Alleviation— which goes beyond policy technicalities(技术性细节) to tell the 59 (person) stories of how measures have transformed lives across remote corners of the country —— 60 (change) their views on China for the better. But I was 61 (especial) delighted when many Chinese readers said that they had learned about their own country from reading this book, 62 .(write) by a foreigner. That was a less-expected honor.
While we initially released the book 63 English and Chinese, I was delighted that an Italian publisher asked to translate and published it and 64 a Nepalese publisher followed suit, bringing this story to more people in more languages.
That's because, as Nelson Mandela once said, “If you talk to a man in 65 language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”

I still vividly remember my freshman year at college, a time full of excitement and new experiences.
Like many other students, I was eager to get involved in various activities and make the most of my college life. So, when I was accepted into our school's famous chorus(合唱团)program, I was over the moon. The prospect of going on an international tour to China and other Asian countries was just amazing, and I was determined to do everything I could to be a good member of the chorus.
One of our first performances was scheduled at the city hall about an hour away from campus. I had been looking forward to it for weeks. But that very morning, disaster struck.woke up late and realized with horror that I had missed the bus that was supposed to take us there. My heart sank. I felt panic rising in me. I thought to myself,“This is the end of everything.” The thought of missing the international tour because of my mistake made me feel really terrible.
I didn't have a car, and I didn't know anyone nearby who could drive me there. I was at a loss as to what to do. So, I just wandered out into the hallway, feeling really upset and kind of crying silently. That's when Pam, my neighbor across the dormitory, came out to see what was wrong.
Pam and I had known each other for two months, but our relationship had been rocky. A lot of that was my fault. I had just arrived at college and made some freshman friends. We were having so much fun, running up and down the halls, playing practical jokes on each other and laughing loudly. We didn't really think about how all that noise might affect others on the same floor. Pam would ask us to be quiet because she was trying to sleep or needed to study. We would stop for a while, but soon we would go back to our usual fun.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
So, that morning, I was a bit embarrassed to see Pam who came to check on me first. She drove me to the city hall, right before the chorus began to perform.
