I once found myself in the darkest valley of my life. Gossip and rumors, like a storm of arrows, rained down upon me from all directions. They struck me mercilessly, leaving invisible wounds that bled with every passing day. My world, once filled with the vibrant colors of hope and joy, was now painted in the bleak shades of despair and confusion. I felt as if I were trapped in a labyrinth (迷宫), with no exit in sight, and every turn leading to another dead end of self-doubt and fear.
During those suffering days, I sought comfort in the most unexpected of places — the pages of classical literature. I remember the first time I opened a renowned classic, its words seemed to whisper to me in a language both ancient and familiar. As I delved deeper into the text, I was amazed to find that the struggles of the characters mirrored my own in many ways. They too had faced trials and challenges, had been misunderstood and judged by others, yet they had found the strength to persevere.
One particular novel left an unforgettable mark on my soul. The heroine, a woman of great depth and resilience (恢复力), faced a scandal that threatened to ruin her reputation and life. But instead of submitting to despair, she retreated into her inner world, using her intellect and wisdom to navigate through the storm. Her journey was fraught with pain and uncertainty, yet she emerged stronger and more self-assured than before.
Reading this story was like holding a mirror up to my own life. I began to see that the gossip and rumors were not a reflection of who I truly was. They were merely the shadows cast by the fear and ignorance of others. I realized that my worth was not defined by the words of others, but by the substance of my character and the integrity of my actions.
As I continued to immerse myself in the world of literature, I discovered valuable lessons about life and human nature. I learned that suffering, though painful, could be a catalyst (催化剂) for growth and transformation. The characters in the books showed me that even in the darkest of times, there was always a glimmer of hope, a spark of light waiting to be fanned into a flame.
I started to rebuild my life, one step at a time. Drawing strength from the resilience of the literary figures I had come to admire, I learned to value my own thoughts and feelings, to trust in my own judgment, and to rise above the noise of gossip and judgments. Eventually, I emerged from the shadows and walked once again in the light, with my head held high and my heart filled with renewed hope and purpose.

D. It allowed the author to avoid confronting the self-doubt caused by social judgment.
43. What can we infer about the heroine of the particular novel mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. She quickly surrendered to the pressure of the scandal.
B. She relied heavily on others’ assistance to overcome her troubles.
C. She emerged from the crisis with greater inner strength and self-confidence.
D. She was completely ruined by the scandal in both reputation and life.
44. Why did the author compare reading the story to holding a mirror up to her own life
A. Because the heroine looked exactly like her in appearance and personality.
B. Because the book showed her the true nature of gossip and rumors.

D Because she found herself becoming a character in the story.
45. Which of the following best describes the author's experience
A. A friend in need is a friend indeed. B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. Don’t judge a book by its cover. D. Actions speak louder than words.
C
Koko the gorilla knew over 1,000 signs based on American Sign Language, and used them to do everything from asking for food to joking around. Her trainer and long-term companion, Penny Patterson, thought Koko went further still, signing in novel ways and showing complex emotions. According to Ms Patterson, when a cat that Koko loved was killed in an accident, Koko signed: “Cat, cry, have-sorry, Koko-love.” When Koko died last month, some of her obituaries (讣告) mourned the gorilla who had “mastered American sign language.
Then came the backlash, from linguists and experts in sign languages. Sign languages have complex grammars, equivalent to spoken tongues in expressiveness. Koko’s ability, it was pointed out, fell well short of a fluent human signer. Moreover, Ms Patterson was her interpreter, a role that invited the question of how much she was inferring what Koko “must have meant,” and explaining away random signs. It was hard to be sure: Ms Patterson preferred speaking to journalists over sharing her video and raw data about Koko with fellow researchers.
There is no doubt that animals communicate. Animals from one region can share sounds that differ from groups in another, leading researchers to talk of animal “dialects.” Then there are the remarkable achievements of Koko and her primate predecessors, including a chimp delightfully named Nim Chimpsky. Yet there is an important distinction between communication and language. Take the misleading term “body language.” It is sometimes claimed that words convey just 7% of meaning, and that body language and tone of voice do the rest. This wildly overstretches an old study which found that most emotional messageing — as opposed to the propositional kind — comes from tone and body language, especially when a neutral word such as “maybe” was used. But try conveying a fact like “It will rain on Tuesday” with your eyebrows, and the difference becomes clear. Language allows for clear statements, questions and commands.
Nim Chimpsky's near-namesake, Noam Chomsky, has argued that people have a kind of “universal grammar”, and that all humankind's languages are mere variations on a theme. Mr Chomsky has changed his mind repeatedly on what constitutes the core of human language, but one obvious candidate is syntax — rules, not just words, which allow the construction of a huge variety of meaningful utterances (所说的话). This capacity may even be infinite. Any statement in English, for example, can be made longer by adding “He said that …” at the beginning. This property is called recursion: a simple statement (“It’s cold”) is embedded (嵌入) in a more complicated one (“He said that it’s cold”). Human syntax also allows for hypotheticals (假设) (“If she hadn’t arrived ...”), talking precisely about events distant from the present, and so much more.
That gorillas lack syntax should not blind humans to their magnificence. But the fact that Koko could communicate should not mislead observers into thinking she possessed language.
46. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To prove that animals like Koko can master human language perfectly.
B. To discuss the difference between animal communication and human language.
C To criticize Patterson for not sharing her research data with the public.
D. To explain why syntax is the most important part of human language.
47. The underlined word in Para.2 is closest in meaning to “_______”.
A. approval B. bias C. opposition D. evidence
48. Why did Linguists and sign language experts doubt Koko’s mastery of American sign language because_______.
A. Koko was not as expressive as a human signer B. Koko seldom needed an interpreter
C. Koko was able to communicate with journalists D. Koko failed to speak several animal “dialects”
49. Which of the following statements would the author probably disagree with
A. Humans can express past events using language while apes cannot.
B. Tone and body language play a dominant role in human communication.
C. Words enable humans to convey clear meanings.
D. Gorillas are still magnificent in terms of their ability to communicate.
50. Which might be the best title for the article
A. Nim Chimpsky and Noam Chomsky — Who Has the Upper Hand
B. Syntax — What Separates Humans and Apes.
C. Koko the Gorilla — A Magnificent Communicator.
D. Great Apes — Language and Communication Are Not the Same Thing.
D
Few would question that arts, in its massive forms and media, are like a mirror that reflects the social, cultural, economic or even political situation of a society of a particular era. However, beyond being simply an illustration of the human condition, arts can be vital in pushing the country forward culturally and economically.
Without doubt, arts are important for the progress of society. They enable individuals to develop on the whole and deepen the social ties in communities by gathering people to create, experience and enjoy art together, which can be seen from traditional ethnic dances to interactive theatre performanccs. Beyond material wants and needs, human beings find fulfilment in experiencing and expressing things of remarkable value through arts. Meanwhile, strong citizens’ participation in arts also strengthens the social fabric of a nation.
Moreover, arts enable a nation to progress in human rights and values. As powerful media that are able to stir hearts and cause reflection, arts can speak up the human voice of criticism sharply and clearly in times of crisis, and call upon society to seek the common good. It is evident that arts, which express human values and emotions, can constitute a profound way of promoting human dignity and additionally, form the barrier of the ethical (道德的, 伦理的) and moral life of society.
More often than not, a booming arts scene may not narrow the rich-poor divide. It’s not hard to see that in a highly competitive world, it is essential for governments to prioritize the development of a strong workforce and the building of sustainable industries. However, arts may well complement (补充) economic policies as arts encourage individuals to exercise creativity. As Albert Einstein stated, imagination is more important than knowledge. While knowledge and professional skills may stimulate a country’s development, the ability to innovate and think out of the box may be valuable to a society facing ever new and unpredictable challenges.
While the importance of arts may differ from country to country, depending on its economic circumstances and the socio-political issues, the importance of arts to the progress of a nation should not be overlooked.
51. What's the first paragraph mainly about
A. The forms of arts. B. The functions of arts.
C. The definition of arts. D. The development of arts.
52. How do arts influence human rights and values
A. By reflecting humans’ views.
B. By pointing out the common good.
C. By giving people a sense of fulfillment.
D. By forming the moral standard of society.
53. Why is Albert Einstein mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To praise Albert Einstein’s achievements.
B. To call on humans to remember our history.
C. To stress the importance of arts in creativity.
D. To show the necessity of knowledge and skills.
54. According to the passage, what role does art play in economic development
A. It directly reduces the economic gap between the rich and the poor.
B. It provides essential workforce training for sustainable industries
C. It complements economic policies by encouraging creativity.
D. It is the primary driver of a country’s economic growth.
55. What will the author probably agree with
A. Arts serve as the major influence in values.
B. Arts play a part in the progress of a country.
C. Arts should aim at strengthening social bonds.
D. Arts can bridge the gap between rich and poor.

Every single person has a story to share, and a growing number of older Australians are choosing to record their life memories as short films. While writing memoirs can take years, creating a life story film takes just a few hours — and the resulting films are far more vivid than writing or looking through photo albums.
Television producer and director Danika Armytage, known for producing shows like The Block, River Cottage Australia, Travel Guides, and The Living Room, has launched a company called Big Stories Little Films, which specialises in creating life legacy films. Since its inception in 2024, Danika has been busy bringing people’s stories to life in film.
“Our films tell life stories, capture family ancestry, and allow wisdom to be passed between generations,” Danika explains. “They are often a gift between family members — either ordered as a birthday present from the kids, or as a film gifted from the grandparents to their grandkids — it’s like a film heirloom (传家宝) to pass between generations.”
Danika was inspired to start the company after filming an interview with her own grandmother, Halimah, before she passed away. “The film became priceless to my family, especially after Granny died. Now my own children can meet their great-grandmother and feel connected to our family history, even though they never met her in person. Memories fade, but films are a time capsule that safeguards stories, keeping them as vivid as if you’re sitting at the kitchen bench hearing them directly from your grandparent.”
“One of my favourite films was about brother and sister Raymond and Jennice Kersh, now in their 80s, who ran the iconic Sydney restaurant Edna’s Table and were pioneers in serving indigenous ingredients in the Sydney restaurant scene. Their story is inspiring, and their recollections of growing up in Pyrmont in the 1940s, a suburb where everyone was poor but no one was lonel’ are a perfect example of how these films capture living history.”
These life legacy films have become more than just memory carriers — they bridge time, letting younger generations touch the past through elders’ voices and smiles. For families, they’re irreplaceable heirlooms; for society, they’re fragments of living history. As more older Australians embrace this way, countless unique stories are being saved from fading, turning personal moments into lasting family and cultural treasures.
