Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival, is a traditional festival celebrated by all Chinese people. Not everyone celebrates the festival in the same way, with the biggest differences between northern and southern China.
Festival Foods
In the northern cities of China, people generally eat dumplings. They are called jiaozi in Chinese, which means the turn of a lunar new year. Additionally, because they are shaped similarly to a type of ancient money, jiaozi are also regarded as a symbol of wealth.
As compared to the north, people from some southern areas traditionally eat rice cakes (niangao in Chinese), which are made of sticky (黏的) rice flour. Niangao can be interpreted as that people move up to a higher position year after year.
Festival Decorations
It is a common tradition to put up Spring Festival couplets (对联) and “Fu” characters, but some decorations differ a bit between northern and southern China.
In the north, the red “Chinese knot (结)” is also hung, representing happiness. However, in the southern areas, people like to use kumquats, a fruit like a very small orange, for decorations. Due to their yellow colour, they are usually a sign of wealth and harvest.
Red Envelope
In northern China, people usually give red envelopes to the children of their relatives or close friends only. However, people in southern China not only give red envelopes to the children of their relatives and friends, but also to their colleagues and acquaintances. In some southern areas like Guangdong Province, a company manager or a shop owner may also give red envelops to staffs on the first working day of the New Year, wishing for a fortune and giving them a strong sense of team spirit.

On Aug 7, Xu Shixiao and her partner, Sun Mengya, won gold in the first women’s canoe (划艇) double 500 m event at the Tokyo Games. It was also the first Olympic gold medal for China in the event.
Yet Xu’s journey to the Olympics was bumpy — she faced lots of difficulties.
In 2013, the news that women’s canoeing was still not an Olympic event dealt her a heavy blow. At that time, Xu’s coach suggested her either changing to another sport or retiring (退役).
It was impossible for her to change the sport at age 21. Xu gave up her career and found her first job as a saleswoman. The next year she was promoted (晋升) as a human resources manager.
When Xu went to work as usual in a company in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, five years ago, she was surprised to get a call from her former coach, asking about her willingness to return to canoeing and compete in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Xu quickly made her decision.
“I quit my job, told my family about it and went back to training three days later. There was not much time left for me to prepare for the Olympics, “Xu recalls.” I never thought that one day I could go back to the sport. Now that I have started again, I will do my best.”
To catch the opportunity to go back to canoeing on the international level, Xu started her training —“as cruel as hell”. She began her daily exercises early morning and ended at 10: 30 p. m. Every day, she would set several detailed goals for her training. “Only when I reached all my daily goals, I would go ashore,” Xu says.
The more than two months of grueling (艰辛的) training finally paid off. Xu won two gold medals at the 13th National Games in two women’s canoe events, which meant she would be part of the national team to compete in the Tokyo Olympics.

Children are three times more likely to spend lots of time watching TV and playing on screens if their parents do the same, suggested by a Bristol University study. Parents’ computer use was also linked to children’s computer use, and this link was also stronger between fathers and daughters than fathers and sons. The link between fathers’ and daughters’ weekend screen time is particularly strong, it shows. Previous research suggests too much screen time can damage the health of adults and children.
The study looked at five-and six-year-olds from 1,000 Bristol families. Parents were asked how much time they and their children spent watching TV and using a computer, or a cellphone. The results, published in the International Journal of Nutrition and Activity, showed that during the week, 12% of the boys, 8% of the girls and 30% of the parents watched more than two hours of television each weekday. In the families the children were 3.4 times more likely to adopt the same habit if their father exceeded this level — and 3.7 times more likely if their mother watched more than two hours.
On a weekend day, screen-viewing time was much higher, with 45% of the boys, 43% of the girls, 53% of the mothers and 57% of the fathers spending more than two hours watching TV. At the weekend, children were nearly five times more likely to watch more than two hours of TV if their mother or father did the same. Daughters of the fathers who spent more than two hours watching TV were more than twice as likely as sons to exceed this level, the study found. The Bristol researchers said further research was needed to find out why this was the case.
