Finley-Jay is only eight years old, yet his determination to make a difference shines bright. His sights are already set on helping others in his community with his touching acts of kindness.
Inspired by an Internet-based group calling itself “Hit the Ambulance Gamers” which highlights random acts of kindness, or “hits”, he creates and hands out goody bags to ambulance crews in the West Midlands, the UK, to bring joy to the hard-working paramedics (护理人员). Much more than just treats, they are a reminder that compassion can have a deep impact on others.
The youngster fills his goody bags with tea, coffee, chocolates, biscuits, and pens, all gifted to him by friends and family.
“I am so proud of him — he is such a kind little boy,” says his mom, Laura Stubbs. “Whenever we have some spare time, you can find Finley at the hospital handing out little bags that he’s made to every ambulance that arrives. He’s so popular that Shrewsbury ambulance crews all know him now.”
The hospital’s nursing director, Hayley Flavell, also shows her admiration, “What a lovely and kind gesture by Finley — his goody bags will make all the difference to the ambulance crews that arrive at our hospital. Well done, Finley!”
Perhaps this kind-hearted kid’s selfless actions are more worth praising because he lives with ADHD.It is a common mental disorder in children. Its symptoms include difficulty in focusing, inappropriate hyperactivity (多动) and a tendency to act impulsively.
Finley’s love for ambulances has led to him setting up his own online group titled “Finlay-Jay’s Ambulance Bags Journey”. In it, he continues to inspire others to support his mission and spread kindness in their own communities. Finley has taken the concept of random acts of kindness to new heights. Recordings (录音) of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study says. Beehives ( 蜂窝) either recorded or real may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer’s crops.
Years ago, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might stop elephants from eating crops.
But before she asked farmers to set up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would frighten elephants away.
Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next, Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a tree close to each family.
From a distance, Lucy turned on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group didn’t react to the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall ( 瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.
Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn’t tested enough groups yet to know and she has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.

A.Groups of elephants will make bees angry..
B.Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.

Australians are not, as they sometimes joke, the only people to eat their symbolic national animal. But the hunting of kangaroos causes debates Down Under. Many believe the kangaroos destroy grasslands and cause crashes by jumping in front of cars. Animal-rights types argue killing them is inhumane (不人道的), and that kangaroo meat is full of bacteria. But both sides are mad about a new film, which shows cruel killing and suggests that hunting is reducing the population. “We’ve learned how polarising the subject is in Australia,” Mick McIntyre, one of its makers, told a local paper.
Annual surveys suggest that there are more than 47 million kangaroos bounding through the wild. Animals, like dingoes, which feed on them, are becoming rare, so when the grass they eat is sufficient, their numbers jump. State governments have long set “harvesting” quotas (定额) to keep the four most populous species in check. But some ecologists suggest that the hunting is damaging, and that the population estimates are over-optimistic.
Those in favour of hunting point out that Australia earns $175m from it annually. And some scientists argue that kangaroos are a more sustainable source of protein than cows or sheep. Yet the industry is under pressure abroad. Heartwarming campaigns have turned shoemakers against kangaroo leather and weakened foreign appetite for the meat. Russia, once the biggest consumer of kangaroo meat, has issued a ban out of concern for food safety. In the eight years since it first did so, the value of Australia's kangaroo-meat exports has fallen sharply.
As a result, professional hunters were paid less than before. And they killed 1.4 million kangaroos in 2016, a fifth of the permitted maximum. But a higher kangaroo population simply means that more will die in the next drought, says George Wilson of the Australian National University, Worse, he says, in Queensland, landholders have been accused of poisoning kangaroos and building fences to prevent them from reaching water. The back and forth is endless.
32.What does the underlined word “polarizing” in the first paragraph probably mean
A.Abstract. B.Divided. C.Innovative. D.Amazing.
33.According to the text, what is a reason for kangaroo population increase
A.The ban on hunting quotas. B.Their diverse species.
C.Their bounding abilities. D.The decline of natural enemies.
34.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A.Why kangaroo development should be sustainable.
B.How kangaroo goods market expands abroad.
C.Why some people support kangaroo hunting.
D.How exports of kangaroo products suffer.
35.How would George Wilson describe the situation kangaroos face
A.Out of the frying pan, into the fire. B.The survival of the fittest.
C.While the cat is away, the mice will play. D.Let sleeping dogs lie.

第一节 (满分15分)

I liked living in a mess. The desk, which should have been clear for my homework, was always filled with empty milk bottles, old magazines, and Post-it notes. My floor seemed to swallow anything that entered my room. Mom always insisted that I clean my room. I’d respond with a nod, but never actually did it. She ended up having to tidy up herself. But no matter how much she cleaned, I always seemed to turn it into a mess again within days.
One weekend afternoon, I was lying in bed, lost in a book while my room was a total mess. Clothes were piled on the chair, snack wrappers littered the floor, and the desk was entirely hidden beneath my school books. I was comfortably immersed in (沉浸在) my chaos — until the phone rang. It was my best friend Felix. “Hey! How about playing chess together ”
“Good idea! Just come over!” I replied, picturing us laughing and enjoying each other’s company. However, as soon as I hung up the phone, reality hit me like a ton of bricks: my room was an absolute disaster!
I didn’t want my friend to see my room like this. My mind raced — should I call Felix back and tell him I am too busy Wouldn’t it be better to spare him from the horror of stepping into my disaster zone But I felt so guilty at the thought of lying to my best friend just because it looked as if a tornado had hit my room.
I decided to tidy up my room. With only half an hour before Felix arrived, I felt the pressure increasing. I thought about asking someone for help, so I stepped out of my room. I found my brother playing video games and my dad working. Only Mom seemed to have a moment to spare. When I approached her with my request, she turned me down. “You can handle it on your own. Just learn to be independent,” she said gently.

第二节:
One possible version:
Paragraph 1: I knew there was no way out this time. So I walked back to my room. The chaos around me weighed heavily on my mind. Each item reminded me of the work I had to do. Time was running out, and I knew I had to get it together and take action. I picked up the clothes from the chair and put them into the laundry basket. Then I threw the snack wrappers into the trash can and piled my schoolwork. I wiped the dust off the desk. It felt good to see some progress.
Paragraph 2: Just as I finished cleaning, I heard a knock on the door. It was Felix. After greeting my family, he walked into my room with me. As he stepped inside, he was surprised at how tidy it looked. Embarrassment washed over me as I explained that my room had been a total mess before this clean-up. I finally decided to take charge of the chaos. Felix remarked on how impressive it was to see me managing my space, admiring my newfound independence. A strong feeling of pride welled inside me.
