While the Internet can bring people closer together, it can also harm friendships.
Firstly, talking online is no 44 for face-to-face contact — images really cannot replace a real-life smile or hug. According to a parenting expert, Denise Daniels, communicating through a screen makes it more difficult for children to concentrate or show kindness to others. As we know, important social skills are developed through direct contact with other people. It is these skills 45 enable us to develop lifelong friendships.
Secondly, the Internet can make people 46 — not thinking of anyone or anything but themselves. For example, instead of having proper conversations with their friends, some people are only concerned with their online 47 — How many “likes” did I get How many followers do I have — though we know that the number of “likes” or followers cannot compare to having long-term and 48 friendships. In addition, a lot of the content 49 on social media is shallow or 50 . Posts about funny cat images do not 51 help form meaningful relationships.
Thirdly, online relationships may not be what they appear to be. Friendships are built on the 52 of trust, and with online communication you can never be one hundred percent sure that the people you are chatting to are being honest about who they are. Because of this, going online can be particularly dangerous for people 53 are easily influenced or too trusting.
In my opinion, friends should focus more on face-to-face communication, and less on online communication. This is the best way to 54 healthy relationships.
五、阅读理解
You really can make free phone calls using the Internet.
Google Meet
Google Meet is an app-to-app calling service that works across desktop and mobile platforms. Video meetings are encrypted (加密), it also supports audio calls, and you can form massive group calls with up to 100 people. What’s more appealing is that Google Meet display s real-time captions (字幕) as the other person is speaking.
Signal
Signal lets you send and receive texts, make voice and video calls (including group calls), and share your location and files. It was developed with a focus on privacy and security; it uses end-to-end encryption to protect your messages and calls, so only you and the recipient can see or hear what you’re exchanging.
Google Voice
Google Voice is one of the best ways to make a call over the Internet. You get a real phone number, so you can make free calls to an actual phone number. Free calls you make with Google Voice must be to numbers in the United States or Canada, and they’re limited to three hours. However, you can continue to make a free call to the same number over and over again.
WhatsApp
Meta-owned WhatsApp is a popular texting app with hundreds of millions of users. However, you can also call your WhatsApp friends right from the app using only your Internet connection. You just need to confirm your phone number to get started. Once you’re using the app, you can start a new conversation to clearly see which of your contacts are also using WhatsApp, and then you can call them for free no matter where in the world they’re located. Group calls can include as many as 32 people.

In 2018, 12-year-old Damian Earley was walking his dog when he noticed garbage cans knocked over by the wind, spilling trash onto the streets of his Columbus neighborhood. Disturbed by the environmental damage, he was inspired to create The Garbage Lot, a heavy platform with a locking mechanism to keep trash cans upright (直立). His invention won the “Industry Innovator Award” at Ohio’s Invention Convention and later earned first place at the national level.
Damian’s path as an inventor was shaped by his participation in the Ohio Invention League (the OIL), a nonprofit that provides free STEM education to K-12 students. Through hands-on invention competitions, he learned to “sell” his invention to judges. Writing and crafting his presentation helped sharpen his communication skills and practice entrepreneurship (创业), which are crucial for the future employment market where students will likely work in jobs that have not yet been created.
Damian’s teachers, particularly Sarah Priebe, admired his strong work ethic. She recalled Damian’s exceptional oral presentation in eighth grade, “You can tell he put a lot of time and practice into it. Many gifted students don’t seem to need to work as hard to excel at school, but he is always engaged and ready.”
Elena and Zavier, Damian’s siblings, followed in his footsteps, creating their own inventions and receiving awards. Elena, 14, developed a device to remove bad smells from washing machines, while 11-year-old Zavier invented a drone for people with limited mobility. Their father, Matt, shared that watching the invention process take place had changed how he addressed issues in his vinyl records (黑胶唱片) business.
58.What drove Damian to create The Garbage Lot
A.His attention to neighborhood safety. B.The mess caused by fallen trash cans.
C.His interest in environmental science. D.The need for an invention competition.
59.How does the OIL program prepare students for future jobs
A.By providing paid STEM education. B.By creating jobs that haven’t existed.
C.By promoting entrepreneurial thinking. D.By selling invention presentation skills.

OpenAI unveils AI technology that recreates human voices. The start-up is sharing the technology, voice engine, with a small group of early testers as it tries to understand the potential dangers.
The voice engine technology has the remarkable ability to mimic human voices with astonishing accuracy. By analyzing vast amounts of audio data, it can capture the unique characteristics of different voices, such as pitch, tone, and rhythm. This means that it can generate speech that sounds almost indistinguishable from that of a real person.
OpenAI is being cautious with the roll-out of this technology. The company is aware that such powerful voice-recreation technology could be misused. For example, it could be used to create fake audio recordings for malicious purposes, like spreading false information or conducting voice-phishing scams. By starting with a small group of early testers, OpenAI hopes to identify and address these potential risks before making the technology more widely available.
In addition to the potential for misuse, there are also ethical questions to consider. As the technology becomes more advanced, it blurs the line between what is real and what is artificial. This raises concerns about how we perceive authenticity in the age of AI. For instance, in the field of journalism, how can we be sure that an audio interview is genuine And in personal relationships, if someone uses an AI-generated voice to communicate, is it a form of deception
Despite these concerns, the potential applications of the voice engine technology are vast. In the entertainment industry, it could be used to create more immersive experiences, such as in video games where characters’ voices can be generated in real-time based on the player’s actions. It could also assist the visually impaired by providing more natural-sounding voice-over for audiobooks and navigation systems.
62.What is the main feature of OpenAI’s voice engine technology
A.It can analyze audio data quickly.
B.It can recreate human voices with high accuracy.
C.It can be used for free by early testers
D.It can prevent the spread of false information.
63.Why is OpenAI sharing the technology with only a small group of early testers
A.To limit the number of people who can use the technology for free.
B.To test the technology’s performance in different situations in advance.
C.To find out and deal with the possible problems the technology may cause.
D.To collect feedback on the technology’s user-friendliness ahead of time.
64.What ethical questions does the advanced voice-recreation technology raise
A.How to avoid being overdependent on the technology.
B.How to protect the privacy of audio data.
C.How to ensure the authenticity of audio in different fields.
D.How to advocate more people to use the technology.
65.What are the potential applications of the voice engine technology mentioned in the last paragraph
A.Using AI-generated voice to communicate with others.
B.Improving the navigation systems for the hearing impaired.
C.Spreading false information and conducting voice-phishing scams.
D.Helping the entertainment industry and the visually impaired.

Recent research challenges decades of belief about money and happiness. While past studies claimed wealth weakly affects happiness in rich nations, new findings prove income comparison powerfully shapes joy. The key is “relative wealth” — feeling richer than others brings more happiness than high income or education alone.
Researchers analyzed 357 global surveys covering 2.3 million people. Participants ranked themselves on a 10-level “status ladder (地位等级)” comparing their position to society. Results revealed social comparison drives over 70% of money’s impact on happiness — far outweighing actual resources. “Money gains power when measured against others,” explains lead researcher Dr. Lee.
The researchers also found that the effect of social comparison was stronger in countries, such as Singapore. Resource competition forces constant social evaluation. Yet upward comparisons often backfire. As Mark Twain observed, “Comparison is the death of joy.” Having just a little more money than your parents doesn’t bring much satisfaction, because nowadays the neighbors are clearly much wealthier.
Critically, economic growth sometimes fails to improve national happiness. Why The study suggests unequal progress makes many feel left behind despite personal gains. True well-being requires advancing both personally and relatively within society’s position ladder. Lawmakers thus must balance wealth creation with fair competition policies.
66.How does the study measure “relative wealth”
A.By measuring education levels. B.By using a 10-level status ladder.
C.By researching job satisfaction forms. D.By analyzing spending habits.
67.Why does the author mention Mark Twain’s words
A.To criticize social comparison. B.To claim historical wisdom is outdated.
C.To emphasize Singapore’s uniqueness. D.To indicate money’s declining importance.
68.What can be inferred about traditional economic policies
A.They overvalue absolute income growth. B.They effectively use social comparison.
C.They prioritize education over wealth. D.They ignore resource competition.
69.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Absolute Wealth: Real Path to Happiness
B.Why Money Fails to Buy Joy in Modern Society
C.The Hidden Power of Relative Wealth Comparison
D.Education vs. Income: New Research Findings

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) is causing increased deadly air pollution. AI requires huge computer processing, demanding constant electricity from power plants and backup generators. This pollution is projected to cause over 1,000 early deaths yearly in the U.S. by 2030, with public health costs nearing $ 20 billion annually due to illnesses and missed work or school days.
Despite these impacts, the problem appears overlooked by the tech industry. “If you examine tech companies’ sustainability reports, they mention carbon emissions (碳排放) and water use, but completely ignore harmful air pollutants already damaging public health,” explains Shaolei Ren, a study author.
The research team recommends that tech companies report air pollution from their electricity use and generators. They also call for proper compensation for communities suffering the worst health effects from this pollution.
Notably, AI-related air pollution harms certain low-income neighborhoods more severely, partly because they often sit closer to power sources. Furthermore, pollution spreads across state boundaries. “Data centers pay local taxes,” Ren notes, “but health impacts reach nationwide. Other affected areas receive no compensation.” For example, pollution from Virginia data centers spreads into seven neighboring regions.
As tech companies compete to launch new AI services, dangerous air pollutants — especially tiny particles entering lungs — are expected to rise sharply. By 2030, health damage from AI pollution could match that of all vehicles in California.
“AI’s growth hugely increases demand for data centers and energy, making it the fastest-growing energy user across all industries,” Ren states. Training just one major AI model creates pollution equal to 10,000 car trips between Los Angeles and New York.
“If your relatives have asthma or heart conditions, this pollution may harm them today. This serious health problem cannot wait,” Ren warns.
70.What do tech company reports fail to include about environmental impact
A.Power plants’ costs. B.Harmful air pollutants.
C.Carbon emissions data. D.Water conservation efforts.
71.What does the underlined word “compensation” in paragraph 3 most likely mean
A.Money or support for losses suffered. B.New equipment to reduce pollution.
C.Scientific research on air quality. D.Medical treatment for illnesses.
72.Why does Ren say pollution spreads “nationwide”
A.To argue for higher local taxes.
B.To prove generators are inefficient.
C.To encourage relocation from cities.
D.To show all affected communities require attention.
七选五
Humans are born and wired to compete with one another. Influencers compare how many “likes” they have on social media. Millionaires envy billionaires. Famous actors complain about the Oscar or Emmy that should have been theirs.
73 On the contrary, if left unmanaged it can create misery (不幸) for ourselves and others, at least when it comes to happiness and longevity (长寿).
This conclusion comes from research conducted on Olympic athletes. In a 1995 study, scholars studied the emotional reactions of silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. They examined the medalists both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium (领奖台). 74
More recent research has looked at the life span (寿命) of all three medalist categories. A 2018 study tracked the average longevity of those representing the U. S. in the Olympic Games from 1904 to 1936. The results showed that the athletes whose best performance was silver lived to 72. Gold medalists beat this by a solid (不间断的) four years, living to 76. But first prize went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78.
The study had a handy explanation: “ 75 ” In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser. This is because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists while the bronze winners compare themselves favourably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all.
This hypothesis (假设) is based on a large body of literature (文献) showing the difference between upward and downward social comparison. When we compare ourselves with those who have more money, power, or achievements, we often feel like losers. 76
The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. More likely, you will spend most of your time feeling like a silver medalist. 77 It would be much more advisable, then, to aim for healthy competition in which you do your best without expectation of being the absolute winner. The only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you.
A.Dissatisfactory competition results may negatively influence health.
B.In contrast, downward comparison makes people feel better about themselves, and thus happier.
C.It is discovered that the bronze winners appeared happier on average than the silver medalists.
D.Comparing our own circumstances with the unfortunate lot of others is a reliable path to general well-being.
E.Although the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it does not always lead to human flourishing (兴盛).
F.You may be always longing, pinning your hope on a single outcome, but eventually ending up with failure and disappointment.
G.People commonly feel bad about themselves after checking out the lives of others on social media who post only about their victories and celebrations.
