During the lively Paris Olympics, while the spotlight shone on the athletes, a group of unsung heroes worked tirelessly behind the scenes — the Olympic volunteers. This year, out of 300,000 applicants, around 45,000 were chosen as volunteers, with 20 percent coming from nearly 150 countries. These volunteers wore bright green uniforms (制服) to be easily noticed in the purple venues (场馆). They offered help to viewers and media alike, making them an important part of the Olympic experience.
On my first day as a reporter, I met a technical problem with my media system account. Thankfully, Chinese volunteer Guo came to help me out. “I hope to improve my language, communication skills, and problem-solving methods through this event,” said 24-year-old Guo from Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province, who was studying wireless communication at the Paris Institute of Digital Technology. As a former professional swimmer, Guo saw this as her chance to take part in the Olympics, though in a different role. Another Chinese volunteer, Yang, faced challenges in managing her job and volunteer duties. Despite giving up her holidays, she felt great pride in contributing to the event.
One of my most memorable experiences was meeting with a French volunteer. When I needed help to find the visitor center, a young man on a scooter (小型摩托车) appeared, like a sort of “Monkey King riding a cloud”, and offered to take me there. After helping me, he expressed his admiration for the Beijing Olympics and his desire to visit China again.
Volunteers like them were seen everywhere — from bus stops to competition venues — offering directions and helping with a smile. When large crowds left the venues after the events, causing overcrowding, some volunteers sat on high chairs with loudspeakers, providing directions to go outside in both English and French with a smile. These amazing volunteers, truly show the Olympic spirit, making the event and Paris shine even brighter.
Why might the volunteers wear bright green uniforms
A. To stand out in the crowd.
B. To show love for athletes.
C. To fit in with the venues.
D. To stand for their countries.

D. She wasn’t as patient and helpful as the French volunteer.
6. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To doubt the organization of the Paris Olympics.
B. To praise the service of Paris Olympic volunteers.
C. To show the meaning of hosting Olympic Games.
D. To provide a detailed schedule of Olympic events.
7. How is the text mainly developed
A. By listing the benefits of volunteer work.
B. By discussing historical Olympic events.
C. By comparing different views on Olympics.
D. By sharing personal stories and experiences.

As a student at Howard University in Washington, D.C., Martino Wilkerson had to be at his lifeguard job at 5:15 am, and his bicycle was his key transport. Wilkerson is among 870,000 people who bike to work.
While the data show that only 0.6% of Americans bike to work, supporters of cycling say “active transportation” will, in the long run, increase income (收入), save money, and help economic growth.
Studies in Bicycling Means Business show that cycling-related activities add nearly 140 billion into our national economy, providing 1 million jobs and 18 billion in tax revenue.
The effect on individuals can be even greater. A study reports that the average (平均的) yearly cost of a car is 9,881. Further, its research shows that families that earn less than 70,000 a year spend nearly 20% of their income on transportation. “So if you can change that, or even cut that expense in half, you have just made a more affordable city for yourself to live in,” says Mike Sule, director of Asheville on Bikes.
It’s why D.C.’s decision six years ago to teach all second graders to ride a bike is not only about health and fun but also about the economy. The program is the idea of Miriam Kenyon, director for fitness education. The idea for the program came when she invited a local group to teach bike safety and discovered that a significant percentage of children as old as 10 didn’t know how to ride a bike.
“Children who learn to ride bikes early tend to stick with it through their whole life and become healthier adults. Furthermore, the public health effect is also an economic effect for the society,” says Jenny Liu, professor at the Toulan School. “If we have healthier people who are more active, it obviously drives the costs of health care down.”
Why is Martino Wilkerson mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To lead in the topic.
B. To tell an interesting story.
C. To express the concern for bikers.
D. To show a personal point.
9. How can riding a bike do good to individuals according to Mike Sule
A. It can increase their income.
B. It keeps them healthier.
C. It provides a more beautiful city.
D. It cuts down their living cost.
10. What made Kenyon get the idea of teaching second graders to bike
A. A lesson.
B. A report.
C. A car accident.
D. An economy program.
11. What is Jenny Liu’s attitude towards kids’ riding bikes
A. Unclear.
B. Doubtful.
C. Favorable.
D. Uncaring.

Bruce has been missing the upper part of his beak (喙) since at least 2012. This makes the parrot look different. But scientists are more surprised at what he can do in spite of his injury.
When he was saved, this young bird, just at the age he was learning to fly, went to live at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch, southern New Zealand.
Long, sharp beaks help parrots find insects in the woods. Bruce’s injured beak means he couldn’t forage on his own. Normally, these birds use their beaks to keep their feathers (羽毛) clean, but Bruce couldn’t. However, researchers noticed that Bruce had his own way to do it.
First, he looks for his tool among small pointy stones. He then rolls a few stones around in his mouth with his tongue until he finds one that he likes. He holds the chosen stone between his tongue and lower beak to pick through his feathers.
This behavior didn’t come from the wild. When Bruce arrived at Willowbank, he was too young to learn it. And no other bird at Willowbank uses stones this way. “It seems like he just creates this tool for himself,” says Amalia Bastos, who researches how animals understand the world.
Tool use is just one of parrots’ many skills. The birds are famous for copying — and perhaps even understanding — human speech. These make the birds seem quite smart. But studying intelligence (智力) is difficult, especially in animals other than humans.
Researchers once thought these skills made humans special. But some other animals also practice these skills, such as dolphins and elephants. So do parrots. Even so, parrots may not be an obvious choice for studying human-like intelligence. Parrots’ bodies are very different than ours. Their brains also look quite simple compared to ours. But studies over the last 10 years are highlighting the hidden powers of bird brains. And those powers suggest parrots may be able to teach us about what human-like intelligence is like.
What can be learned about Bruce before he lived at Willowbank
A. He was badly hurt.
B. He was kept at a zoo.
C. He had learnt how to fly.
D. He was lost in the woods.
13. Which best explains the word “forage” underlined in paragraph 3
A. Cry out for help.
B. Turn up in time.
C. Search for food.
D. Live with others.
14. What can we infer about Bruce
A. He learnt the skill in the wild.
B. He taught himself to use tools.
C. He often looked for small round stones.
D. He liked to roll stones around in his mouth.
15. What is a suitable title for the text
A. How an Injured Parrot Lived
B. Taking Action to Protect Parrots
C. Scientists Raise Young Parrots in the Lab
D. Parrots May Be Smarter than We Thought

Dear John,
Thank you for your thoughtful email. I’m glad that you care so much about our well-being, especially as mid-term exams are approaching and everyone is feeling more stressed than usual.
After discussing with some classmates, I’d like to suggest organizing a short outdoor hiking trip to Baiyun Mountain. I believe this would be the most effective relaxation activity for our class. Spending time in nature can help clear our minds, reduce anxiety, and improve our mood. Moreover, hiking together encourages communication and teamwork, which helps strengthen our class bond.
If possible, we could go this Saturday morning. Please let me know what you think. I’m happy to help with the arrangements.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
