Two girls released 250 harvest mice into a nature reserve in Devon, England, on 27 August. The 13-year-olds raised dozens of the tiny rodents (啮齿动物) at their own homes over two years, as part of a plan to boost the species’ population.
Harvest mice are sensitive to weather changes and food shortages, so their numbers naturally go up and down. Over the last century property developments and new ways of using land have taken over or changed many of their habitats. Modern agricultural practices, such as the use of chemical pesticides and large combine harvesters, further endanger these tiny creatures. Scientists believe that the number of harvest mice in Britain is on the decline.
Best friends Eva Wishart and Emily Smith decided to do something to help. They raised 4,000 to fund a project working with ecologist Derek Gow, who is an expert in reintroducing species to habitats. The money helped them buy harvest mice and 27 tanks for them to live in at their homes, where they had babies. To release the mice, they had a specially built shelter made: it had small holes so that the mice could come and go, but natural enemies such as snakes couldn’t get in.
When the mice were released, Eva told The Guardian newspaper, “I love them — they’re my little babies. I’m really proud of them going into the big wide world. They are beautiful.” Emily said, “It’s nice to have them, but it’s good that they’re going to do their part in the ecosystem.”
The friends are planning another, smaller release next year. They are not the only ones working to help the harvest mouse. For more than 20 years, Chester Zoo has been keeping and releasing the tiny rodents. In 2021, the Mammal Society charity launched the National Harvest Mouse Survey. It encourages volunteers to look for and report harvest mice nests.
24. Why did Eva and Emily raise harvest mice at their homes
A. To earn money for their future education.
B. To stop the decrease of the little creatures.
C. To train them to adapt to modern agriculture.
D. To study their sensitivity to weather changes.
25. To carry out the plan, what key action did Eva and Emily decide to take
A. To design a special container. B. To receive money from parents.
C. To make a multifunctional feeder. D. To launch an independent project.
26. How did the girls feel about releasing the mice
A. Upset and anxious. B. Excited and relieved.
C. Grateful and honored. D. Satisfied and hopeful.
27. What is the significance of the National Harvest Mouse Survey
A. Engaging public in tracking mice habitats.
B. Training volunteers to build nests for the mice.
C. Providing funding for mice breeding programs.
D. Collecting data to guide species reintroduction.

A Florida doctor successfully operated on a patient 7,000 miles away in Africa, using a remote-controlled robot. The patient, Fernando Da Silva, who lives in Angola, needed the surgery to treat cancer.
In a robotic surgical procedure, the surgeon does not touch the patient. Instead, the doctor moves their hands to control smaller robotic hands that hold surgical instruments and work on the patient. When the doctor moves their hands around, the robotic hands move in the same way.
Da Silva’s procedure, called “transcontinental robotic telesurgery”, was performed by Dr. Vipul Patel. Seated at a robotic console(控制台) with a 3D screen and highly responsive hand controls, Patel’s movements were transmitted through fiber-optic cables that run under the ocean to robotic arms in the operating room in Angola. Fiber-optic technology transmits data faster and farther than other communication methods.
Patel has performed nearly 20,000 robotic surgeries, but he is usually at a console in the same room as the patient. Despite the distance, he reported no noticeable delay between his movements and the response of the robotic arms. The entire process took about one hour and 20 minutes.
Although Patel was in the US, his medical team was in the operating room in Angola with Da Silva. “I always have my team where the patient is,” Patel explained. “So, if telecommunications fail, the team would just take over and complete the surgery safely. Fortunately, intervention wasn’t needed as Da Silva’s surgery was successful. The procedure was part of a clinical trial approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Patel intended to perform more such surgeries and present the results to the FDA for review.
Patel believes robotic technology will allow doctors to perform surgery around the world and help people in rural or less wealthy areas, where access to medical care is limited. He hopes it can also be used to help people who are experiencing medical emergencies, like heart attacks and strokes.
28. What made Dr. Patel’s surgery on Silva unusual
A. The patient controlled the robotic tools.
B. The surgery was for a rare type of cancer.
C. It was a transcontinental robotic operation.
D. It required no assistance from any medical team.
29. How does fiber-optic technology aid the surgery
A. Providing 3D visual feedback to the patient.
B. Powering the robotic arms in the operating room.
C. Ensuring real-time control from a remote location.
D. Reducing the cost of long-distance communication.
30. What does the underlined word “intervention” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Agreement. B. Involvement. C. Celebration. D. Examination.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A New Treatment for Cancer in Africa
B. The Future of Medical Teams in Surgery
C. The FDA’s Role in Approving New Technologies
D. A Breakthrough in Long-Distance Robotic Surgery

It’s a fascinating time to study early modern English theatre. Recent advancements, such as Martin Wiggins’s British Drama 1533-1642: A Catalogue, the Lost Plays Database, and research supporting The New Oxford Shakespeare, along with works by Laurie Johnson and Callan Davies, have reshaped our understanding of the field. Now, in his new book, The Dream Factory, Daniel Swift demonstrates how this new research enables us to tell fresh stories about the period.
The book focuses on the London playhouse called the Theatre and Shakespeare’s working life there. Swift avoids judging the Theatre by what it later became — the Globe. Instead, he explores its commercial model, the practicalities of its architecture, and the network of people involved — from actors and investors to city officials. Swift uses established livery companies (同业工会) as models for new playhouses, viewing theatre as a professional craft, and calls the Theatre “Shakespeare’s schoolroom”.
Swift vividly describes the challenge of historical evidence, comparing it to a magician’s trick. He uses old court documents to detail actor Richard Burbage’s fight over the Theatre’s ownership, noting Burbage’s energetic personality and how it linked to his acting style. Swift also argues that Brian Ellam, the Theatre’s main builder, mattered as much to Shakespeare’s art as fellow dramatist Christopher Marlowe — an idea deserving further study.
I doubt Swift’s claim that the Theatre was “London’s first playhouse”. The other play-house the Curtain might have opened earlier, and 1574 laws about London playhouses existed before the Theatre. So some of the Theatre’s supposed “innovations” might belong to other playhouses. Still, the Theatre was known as the first, and that reputation is part of its story. The book was also unfair to pre-Shakespearean literary culture, focusing on what it wasn’t doing rather than what it actually achieved.
Overall Swift has written a boldly original book. It invites readers to rethink the history of theatrical imagination and to understand theatre as a genuine form of work and labour. He transforms an early modern anxiety — that plays distracted from God’s work — into a celebration of the discovery of new buildings, people and performances for dreaming.
32. Why does Swift refer to the Theatre as “Shakespeare’s schoolroom”
A. It was the first school for dramatists.
B. Shakespeare taught acting classes there.
C. It was Shakespeare’s specialized training site.
D. It provided Shakespeare with formal education.
33. How does Swift support his argument about Richard Burbage
A. By quoting from Shakespeare’s plays.
B. By analyzing historical legal records.
C. By comparing him with other actors.
D. By studying Burbage’s acting style.
34. According to the author, what is overlooked in Swift’s book
A. Other playhouses’ innovations.
B. The Theatre’s commercial model.
C. The importance of the Globe Theatre.
D. Pre-Shakespearean literary successes.
35. What can readers gain from The Dream Factory
A. A fresh view on theatrical history.
B. An understanding of theatre as work.
C. Details of Globe’s architectural design.
D. Information on lost Shakespearean plays.

Victoria began her day as usual, heading to the kitchen to make some coffee. She preferred using a French press; the coffee tasted far superior to instant. After a quick breakfast, she showered, got dressed, and headed to the office.
Jane, the receptionist and Victoria’s childhood friend, greeted her with a cheerful “Good morning. What a lovely day!” Victoria smiled in response. “Oh, I almost forgot,” Jane continued, “the new interviewee will be here in 10 minutes. You need to meet a girl for the editor position. Let’s hope she’s better than the others. “Victoria nodded, acknowledging the need for a new editor, and walked into her office.
As Victoria settled in, there was a knock on her door. She invited the visitor in and saw a young woman, Katherine, who looked a bit nervous. Katherine introduced herself as the candidate for the editor position. Victoria offered her a seat and tried to make the interviewee as comfortable as possible. However, Katherine remained quite anxious. To ease the tension, Victoria invited her for a coffee break. They discovered a shared love for French press coffee, which seemed to relax Katherine a bit.
After reviewing Katherine’s CV (履历), Victoria was impressed. She offered Katherine the job, which Katherine gratefully accepted. They arranged for Katherine to sign the contract the next day and start immediately. As Katherine left, Victoria mentioned that Katherine seemed familiar, though she couldn’t quite place where she knew her from. Jane also felt that the name Katherine sounded familiar.
The next day, Katherine signed her contract and joined Victoria and Jane for lunch. She was more relaxed and even shared a few jokes. However, halfway through the meal, Victoria suddenly felt dizzy and fainted (晕倒). Jane asked Katherine to stay with Victoria until she woke up. 【原文】W: Honey, now that Jason is older, I feel like I should go back to explore some career opportunities.
M: If that’s what you want, then I fully support you. I really appreciate the contribution you made to the family, putting your own career on hold to be a stay-at-home mom.
W: Yeah, I’m glad I took a few years off after Jason was born. But I still want to push myself professionally.
M: That’s what I love about you. You’ve always been a go-getter. Do you have anything in mind, like go back to your old employer
W: As much as I loved working there, I don’t think I can take the intensity anymore. I’m considering part-time or project-based work which is more flexible.
M: Yeah, that’ll be ideal. Is it easy to find those types of work in your field
W: I think so. But I’ve been out of the workforce for so long. I need to update my skills and re-establish contacts.
M: I know you’ll do great. And I can’t wait for our son to see what an awesome working mom you are!

【原文】How do we live a life of virtue in harmony with our friends, our families, the state, and even the universe order These questions lie at the very heart of Confucianism, a school of thought named after Master Kong, later turned into “Confucius”. Despite being respected as a master, Confucius claimed that he never invented anything but was only conveying and editing ancient knowledge. After his death, his teachings were collected by his students into The Analects, a book in Chinese called Lun Yu. Confucianism is, at its heart, about human nature. It believes that people are basically good and can improve themselves by working on themselves and creating their own character. By practicing the main virtues of mercy, love, fairness, and wisdom, one can become an excellent person. He has some famous sayings, which influence the whole Chinese nation, such as “Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire.”, “When we see people with bad character, we should look inside ourselves and examine ourselves.” and “Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance.”

【答案】
Acceptance and Creativity
The cartoon shows that an elephant named Nancy sits on the heavier side of a seesaw, apologizing, “Sorry, guys. I’m too heavy. My bad.” On the lighter side, a crocodile and two rabbits reassure her, “No, Nancy. You are perfect the way you are,” while the rabbits cleverly turn the seesaw into a slide, joyfully sliding toward Nancy.
Nancy’s initial guilt makes her embarrassed, yet her friends’ acceptance transforms imbalance into joy. The rabbits’ playful solution symbolizes creativity in overcoming challenges. Instead of focusing on flaws, the story encourages celebrating uniqueness and finding unconventional paths to harmony.
Ultimately, the message is clear: self-acceptance and positivity can turn perceived weaknesses into shared happiness. By valuing individuality, we create a world where everyone belongs.

A few hours later, Victoria regained consciousness (意识) and asked Katherine to drive her home. On the way, they passed an old, abandoned building. Katherine mentioned that it used to be her kindergarten, a place where she had many happy memories.
