A man sat at a subway station in washington D. C. and started to play the violin ; it was a cold January morning. He played six pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time , because it was rush hour , 1 ,100 people went through the station , most of them on their way to work.
Three minutes went by, and a middle-aged man noticed there was a musician playing. A few minutes later , someone leaned against the wall to listen to him. They stopped for a few seconds , and then hurried up to meet their schedule.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother followed him along , hurried , but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally , the mother pushed hard , and the child continued to walk , turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. All the parents , without exception , forced them to move on.
In the 45 minutes the musician played ,only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money ,but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32 . when he finished playing and silence took over , no one noticed it. No one applauded ( 鼓掌) , nor was there any recognition.

John Charlie Veron—widely known as the “Father of Coral Reef (珊瑚礁) ” — is a celebrated expert who has personally discovered nearly a quarter of the world’s coral species(物种) and has spent the past 45 years studying Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. But now the 73-year-old is raising the alarm about its future. The Great Barrier Reef, one of the natural wonders, is 2,300 kilometers long and is the only living organism that can be seen from space. It is considered a world treasure site due to its biodiversity (生物多样性) with 30 species of whales, dolphins and sharks. Within the reef itself, there are also a number of tiny organisms and fishes.
However, its health is threatened with extinction. After the recent mass bleaching (白化) events, Veron dived in many areas of the Great Barrier Reef to see the damage by himself. “I was seeing and feeling it and it was absolutely shocking,” he says.
Veron says the mass bleaching events in the past few years and the possibility of losing one of nature’s greatest treasures are a wake-up call for the world in the wider battle against climate change, which, together with the rising sea temperature, is considered the greatest threat to the reef.
Fortunately, earlier this year, the Australian government announced nearly 400million dollars in new funding towards scientific projects designed to help the reef.
There has been criticism in Australia about the slow process of the funding. “It won’t be wasted, though,” Veron says. “Scientists will be able to create a sort of seed bank to protect the species until the climate is good enough to rebuild the reef. What the scientists hope to do is help nature along a bit after the big CO2 increase is over and it starts to come down.”
28. Why is the Great Barrier Reef considered a world treasure site
A. It is a natural wonder. B. It can be seen from space.
C. It has a rich variety of species. D. It is 2,300 kilometers long.
29. Which does Veron think is one of the biggest threats to the reef
A. Human activities. B. Climate change.
C. Bleaching events. D. Small organisms and fishes.
30.What’s Veron’s attitude to the future of the reef from the last paragraph
A Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncertain. D. Uncaring.
31. What does the text mainly tell us
A. Climate change is threatening biodiversity.
B. The reasons for the reef bleaching are clear.
C. The health of the reef in the world is worrying.
D. The Great Barrier Reef is in danger of extinction.

Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音高).
One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music ''actually tunes our sensory system''. This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.
Mandarin(普通话)speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do.This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable(音节)word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word ''mi'' in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.
The lead author of the study, Patrick C. M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.
32. When learning Chinese, a foreigner will find _____.
A. it difficult to learn music at the same time
B. it not difficult to learn music at the same time
C. it hard to master the tones required to speak and understand
D. it easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch
33. Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training
A. Because music training might help people with language study.
B.Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.
C. Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.
D. Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.
34. The underlined word ''intoned'' in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word ''_____''.
A. Created B. spelled C. seemed D. pronounced
35. What would be the best title of this passage
A. Schools Need to Develop Music Programs
B. Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning
C. Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study
D. Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English Speakers

In the town of Willowbrook , young Sarah was in a state of great excitement. Her school was putting on its annual play, and she had been offered a principal role. The school hall had been abuzz for weeks with rehearsals(彩排), prop preparations, and the students practicing their lines. Sarah had spent countless hours rehearsing, wanting to get every word and movement absolutely right.
However, her expectation was a growing sadness. Sarah's dad, Mr. Thompson, worked as an engineer in a big city, and his job often kept him away from home for a long time, which meant he frequently missed out on most of the special moments in Sarah's life. This play seemed to be another addition to that growing list. He had a vital business meeting on the same day, and Sarah, although understanding, couldn't help feeling disappointed. Her classmates talked excitedly about their families coming to watch, increasing her sense of loss.
It was bright and sunny on the day of the play. The school's hall was noisy with students. Students in costumes rushed about, teachers gave last-minute instructions, and the air was thick with anticipation. Sarah peeped(偷看) out from behind the curtains and saw the hall filling up with eager parents, siblings, and friends. Every seat was taken, except one—her dad's.
The play started on time with Sarah and her classmates' performance being the first. The actors delivered their lines with passion and the audience responded with laughter and applause at all the right moments. Sarah played her part with a mix of excitement and longing, wishing her dad could see her shine.
Halfway through, the host called for a surprise guest to enter. He described him as a "mysterious stranger" whose brief appearance would provide a turning point in the plot.
