The text from my son said it all, “Dad, there’s an article you were born to write that the world is finally ready for: Bring Back the Handkerchief (手帕)!” As my son knows, there’s no “bring back” for me. For me, the handkerchief never left.
My mother raised me with several fixed rules. One was that a gentleman always has a clean handkerchief in his right rear pocket, a piece of simple cotton, roughly 15 inches square and less than four inches when folded. I was a dutiful son, but as a child, I had been wondering what it was there for. After 60 years, my body weight now feels wrong if I’m heading out of the house with an empty back pocket.
I am sure this habit has sometimes struck friends but in polite company nobody comments on somebody else’s business. Children like my kids think of my hankie ridiculously old-fashioned and they have their arguments. If you have to be prepared every day for allergies or a cold, why not choose a little packet of tissues, which saves you from that disgusting business of blowing your nose in the thing and then stuffing it back in your pants
I understand their point. But a handkerchief is more durable and has a far wider variety of uses. Can you grab the handle of a pot that’s boiling over with a Tempo tissue Or do you recall the cases of skinned knees and drippy noses that hankie wiped In fact, my wife gave me several new handkerchiefs as gifts. Neither of us can count the number of times she wiped her tears at a movie, or, as it happens, she’s needed to blow her nose.
Yet not even my mother could have predicted the hankie’s new role as an Essential Public Health Appliance. All of us have learnt how hard it is to follow advice from medical experts about not touching your face. Here is an answer. Use your hankie. In case of emergency, your handkerchief can become a makeshift DIY mask that can be pulled over your lower face like a robber entering a bank.
And it will certainly give me the chance to lift my chin and look at my adult children through one eye, asking in her good-hearted way, “What do you have to say now, smarty-pants ”

Endangered polar bears are breeding (繁殖) with grizzly bears (灰熊), creating “pizzly” bears, which is being driven by climate change, scientists say.
As the world warms and Arctic sea ice thins, starving polar bears are being forced ever further south, where they meet grizzlies, whose ranges are expanding northwards. And with that growing contact between the two come increasing hybrids.
With characteristics that could give the hybrids an advantage in warming northern habitats, some scientists guess that they could be here to stay. “Usually, hybrids aren’t better suited to their environments than their parents, but these hybrids are able to search for a broader range of food sources,” Larisa DeSantis, an associate professor of biological sciences at Vanderbilt University, told Live Science.
The rise of “pizzly” bears appears with polar bears’ decline: their numbers are estimated to decrease by more than 30% in the next 30 years. This sudden fall is linked partly to “pizzly” bears taking up polar bears’ ranges, where they outcompete them, but also to polar bears’ highly specialized diets.
“Polar bears mainly consumed soft foods even during the Medieval Warm Period, a previous period of rapid warming,” DeSantis said, referring to fat meals such as seals. “Although all of these starving polar bears are trying to find alternative food sources, like seabird eggs, it could be a tipping point for their survival.” Actually, the calories they gain from these sources do not balance out those they burn from searching for them. This could result in a habitat ready for the hybrids to move in and take over, leading to a loss in biodiversity if polar bears are replaced.
“We’re having massive impacts with climate change on species,” DeSantis said. “The polar bear is telling us how bad things are. In some sense, “pizzly” bears could be a sad but necessary compromise given current warming trends.”

Reading aloud was a common method in the ancient world, the Middle Ages, and as late as the 16th and 17th centuries. Readers were “listeners attentive to a reading voice,” and “the text was to the ear as much as to the eye.” The significance of reading aloud continued well into the 19th century.
Using Charles Dickens’ 19th century as a division line, it would be useful to look at the familial (家庭的) and social uses of reading aloud and reflect on the functional change of it. Dickens usually read his work to friends. Lots of chapters of reading aloud also appeared in Dickens’ own books. More importantly, he took into consideration the Victorian method when writing so much that his books are meant to be heard, not only read on the page.
Reading aloud in a Victorian family is well documented. Besides setting up a pleasant family relationship, reading aloud could protect young people from the danger of solitary (孤独的) reading. Reading aloud was a tool for parents’ guidance: introduce literature to their children and combine leisure and more serious purposes such as religious cultivation in the youths.
Reading aloud in the 19th century was as much a class phenomenon as a family event, which shows that Victorian readership meant a middle-class readership. Those who fell outside this group tended to be ignored by Victorian publishers. Despite this, Dickens managed to provide books to people from different social classes by reducing the price of novels.
Since the literacy level of this part of population was still low before the Education Act, many people from lower classes would listen to texts. Dickens’ readers, who were from such social backgrounds, might have heard Dickens in this manner. It was typical for his texts to be read aloud in Victorian England, and thus illiteracy (文盲) was not a barrier for reading Dickens. Reading was no longer a form of entertainment practiced by the middle class at home.
A working-class home was often not convenient for reading: too many distractions, bad lighting, and so on. As a result, the Victorians from the non-middle classes tended to find relaxation outside home, like in parks and squares, which were good places during their limited spare time. Reading aloud, especially public reading, in some way reduces the differences between classes. The Victorian middle class defined its identity through differences with other classes. Dickens’s popularity among readers from the non-middle classes helped the creation of a new class of readers who read through listening.
Different readers of Dickens were not reading solitarily and “jealously”. Instead, they often enjoyed a more common experience, which is generally too few in today’s world. Modern audiobooks can be considered a version of the method. However, while the 20th- and 21st-century trend for individuals to listen to audiobooks keeps some features of traditional reading aloud—such as “listeners attentive to a reading voice” and the ear being the focus—it is a far more solitary activity.
