The classes were more difficult than in junior high, especially math. Our math teacher, Ms. Zhang, is very serious and gives us a lot of homework. However, my English teacher, Mr. Brown, is funny. He tells jokes and plays games with us, so English class is always enjoyable.
By the end of the week, I had made several new friends. We often have lunch together in the dining hall. Although high school life is more challenging, I believe I can do well with the help of my new friends and teachers.

What a day! I started at my new school this morning and had the best time. I made lots of new friends and really liked my teachers. I was nervous (紧张的) the night before, but I had no reason to be. Everyone was so friendly and polite. They made me feel at ease. It was like I’d been at the school for a hundred years!
The day started very early at 7:00 a.m. I had my breakfast downstairs with my mom. She could tell that I was very nervous. Mom kept asking me what was wrong. She told me I had nothing to worry about and that everyone was going to love me. If they didn’t love me, mom said to send them her way for a good talking to. I couldn’t stop laughing.
My mom dropped me off at the school gate about five minutes before the bell. A little blonde (金黄色的) girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving (招手) at me. She ran over and told me her name was Abigail. She was very nice and we became close straight away. We spent all morning together and began to talk to another girl called Stacey. The three of us sat together in class all day and we even made our way home together! It went so quickly. Our teacher told us that tomorrow we would really start learning and developing new skills.
I cannot wait until tomorrow and feel as though I am really going to enjoy my time at my new school. I only hope that my mew friends feel the same way too.

Dear David,
I’m sorry to learn that you have difficulty learning Chinese. To help you have a better command of Chinese, I’m writing to share with you some practical advice.
With proper guidance and enough practice, you’re bound to learn Chinese well. To begin with, it is advisable that you regularly watch some Chinese learning programmes, which will expose you to an authentic learning atmosphere and will help you develop a better understanding of Chinese culture. Secondly, it’s also highly recommended to make some Chinese friends and communicate with them as much as possible. With frequent communication in real life, you’ll eventually improve your oral Chinese and feel more confident.
Hopefully my tips above can be of some help. Wish you every success.
Yours,
Li HuaAnother possible version
Dear David,
I’m thrilled to know you’re learning Chinese. It’s normal to feel a bit anxious at first, but this feeling will fade quickly. Here are some suggestions.
First, read aloud little poems. Chinese is a beautiful language, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy its rhythm. Second, try to communicate often. You may try joining Chinese cultural clubs at your school to meet like-minded friends. That way, you will feel more relaxed and comfortable. Last but not least, make use of websites of Chinese media, such as China Daily or CGTN, where abundant high-quality learning resources are available. By immersing yourself in these resources, you’ll soon have a deeper insight and eventually be eager to learn more.
As the saying goes, “The Great Wall was not built in one day.” I’m convinced that your persistent efforts will pay off. Go for it, David!
Yours,
Li Hua
