We sat at a riverside restaurant, enjoying spaghetti and watching Christmas boats pass. “Isn’t this the best evening ever ” I said, holding my husband’s hand. We seldom ate out, and the sight of the festive boats added a touch of magic.
Smiling and chatting, we stretched the dinner out to nearly two hours, ending it with shared chocolate cake. I almost danced to get my coat — a black wool one given by my daughter.
I reached for the only black coat on the rack (架子) and put it on. Wait, what It reached below my ankle, not my knee. And I guessed it to be a size 16, not my 8. Fighting back tears, I left my number with the hostess, sure the mix-up would soon be corrected. But no call came that night, nor the next day. Heartsick, I hung the too big coat in the closet, still waiting.
Months later, another cold night, we were ready for dinner with friends. I had to take this coat, pursing (抿) my lips about my lost coat.
“Wow” Penny, an old friend, shouted as soon as we walked in. “Very classic,” said Missy, the hostess. I raised an eyebrow. “You’re kidding. It’s four sizes too big.” I nearly launched into the whole story, but their words stopped me. For the first time I looked at the coat more carefully and noticed the fine label. I frowned. Did I need an attitude adjustment What if I was positive rather than negative about my unplanned acquisition (获得)
Instead of complaining, I asked myself what I needed to do in order to enjoy it. I had it altered (修改) by a woman from church free of charge. The following week, the temperature dropped sharply. As I gathered this altered coat to step into the car, I remembered the coat my daughter gave me, but this one was nearly as warm — and, as Missy said, a classic. Now I wear it with pleasure.

Human-generated garbage has created five huge ocean garbage patches (海洋垃圾带) where global currents meet and shift with waves. These patches were long thought lifeless, with plastics and fishing tools harming marine (海洋的) life. But researchers found a full ecosystem in the largest one. “There’s more life than expected — a whole ecosystem in the patch,” says marine biologist Fiona Chong.
Common organisms (微生物) existing there include Porpita, Velella and Janthina. These surface-floating organisms, called neuston (漂浮生物), form their own food web. Janthina eats Velella and Porpita. They are part of a larger ecosystem too. Chong notes Porpita forms close bonds with young fish, which grow stressed when separated from their host. Beyond this, ocean sunfish, seabirds and turtles all rely on neuston as a major food source, linking the tiny organisms to broader marine life.
“It’s sad how widely human activities impact the ocean.” Chong says, noting that plastics in the patch not only entangle marine life or block their digestive systems (消化系统), but also carry harmful substances up the food chain to higher-level organisms, eventually threatening the balance of entire marine ecosystems. Realizing ocean patches are home to numerous organisms, she has begun rethinking unplanned cleanup efforts, such as large-scale net cleanup that might accidentally catch the organisms here and destroy their weak habitats.
Chong calls for cooperative action to reduce plastic use: improving packaging design, promoting eco-friendly materials, and enhancing recycling systems — every improved link can cut down on waste flowing into the ocean. “It’s difficult and requires cooperation among businesses, governments, and individuals, but for the future of our oceans, we must try.”
28. What do we know about the ocean garbage patches
A. They are formed by natural currents and waves.
B. They were once considered to have no creatures.
C. They were known to support diverse ecosystems.
D. They are mainly affected by plastics and fishing tools.
29. How does neuston contribute to larger marine creatures
A. They break close bonds with young fish.
B. They provide food for larger marine life.
C. They help larger creatures to digest plastics.
D. They created safe habitats for larger creatures.
30. What does the word “entangle” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Trap. B. Protect. C. Feed. D. Clean.
31. What does Chong mainly appeal for in the last paragraph
A. Stopping all plastic production to protect the oceans.
B. Using advanced technology to clean up ocean garbage.
C. Joint efforts from different groups to reduce ocean waste.
D. Letting businesses take full responsibility for ocean protection.
D
Do you ever find yourself sometimes thinking back to the times we wandered, collecting wild flowers and smiling under the sky That feeling is often referred to as nostalgia (怀旧).
Psychologists have defined nostalgia as a self-aware, social emotion, bittersweet but mainly positive. It comes from our happy memories and our desire to go back to the past and reconnect with the people we cared about. Often, nostalgia involves sensory stimuli (感官刺激). On some occasions, the smell of autumn leaves might create a strong longing for your childhood home. Almost everyone can experience nostalgia, although its object tends to vary throughout life. One survey conducted by the psychologist Krystine Irene Batcho found that younger people felt more nostalgia for pets, toys, and holidays than did older people, who felt it more strongly for music.
In contrast to its links to negative emotions, nostalgia doesn’t make us sadder. Rather, nostalgia is a defensive response to unhappiness, one that brings relief from a negative mood. Research from 2006 shows that nostalgia can actually strengthen social ties, improve self-esteem (自尊), and uplift our mood. Other studies suggest that it can also improve our view of life’s meaning, reduce fear of death, and increase optimism (乐观).
Scholars remain uncertain about the accurate mechanism (机制) behind the effectiveness of nostalgia; however, some suggest that reflecting on joyful memories strengthens our sense of self-worth and belonging, particularly during times of loneliness or self-doubt. Its power lets the happiness of the past overcome the current unpleasantness, offering a bit of escape from tough times. To form stronger connections, we can establish traditions around shared past experiences in families, friend groups, and workplaces. Observing special occasions like childhood sports or post-college gatherings can give us something to look forward to.
Perhaps because it is so powerful and complex (复杂的), nostalgia has received magical treatment from poets and writers. “The past is hidden somewhere outside the realm (领域), beyond the reach of intellect.” Marcel Proust wrote.
32. Why does the author mention “autumn leaves” in the second paragraph
A. To illustrate the complexity of nostalgia.
B. To emphasize the joyful nature of nostalgia.
C. To clarify nostalgia’s connection to our senses.
D. To stress individual variety of experiencing nostalgia.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The mismatch between two findings.
B. The potential benefits of nostalgia.
C. The impact of nostalgia on personal mood.
D. The mechanisms behind nostalgia’s effects.
34. What does the author suggest us do in paragraph 4
A. Create shared traditions for bonding and joy.
B. Record the social gatherings regularly.
C. Recognize the unnecessary social gatherings.
D. Say no to the thought of escapism.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Nostalgia: Why We Should Avoid Reflecting on the Past
B. Nostalgia: A Shelter Against the Unhappiness of Our Life
C. A Nostalgia Warning: Our Mental Health Being Attacked
D. Power of Nostalgia: Struggling for an Irreplaceable Present

Use the power of positive self-talk.
Many of us don’t realize how often throughout the day we put ourselves down. The more you tell yourself that you’ re not good enough, the more likely you are to believe it.
37 Practicing affirmations (肯定) regularly has demonstrated remarkable results.
38
It is often more difficult to address personal problems than it is to see solutions for other people. So, it is essential to reach out when you need help. Different types of coaches and therapists (治疗师) have trained for years to help you improve internal conditions.
Set aside me-time
While being social is a crucial part of the human experience, balance is also necessary. We need time and space to be ourselves. “Me-time” can be anything you want it to be. 39 Spending time alone demonstrates self-care and gives you time to recharge your “social batteries”. It also helps you learn how to feel good by yourself without needing others.
Like most things in life, self- confidence doesn’t come without practice. Be gentle with yourself, but remember that you have the power to change for the better. 40

With a big birthday approaching, two of my adult children chose to surprise me with an unforgettable way—skydiving (跳伞). The day finally came and we were together with other fourteen people in a small aircraft. The side door was opened wide, and the wind rushed through the cargo hold (货仓). Everyone was silent, siting perfectly still and staring out at the endless sky.
When we reached a height of 4,300 feet, my son’s face turned pale as he carefully inched next to the opening, leaned (倾斜) sideways, and fell out of the airplane. Something went cold in my heart when I realized he was gone. But, only seconds later, instructions were being barked, and my daughter suddenly appeared in the same space just occupied by my son. She seemed a little nervous and then fell away into the wild blue sky after her brother.
For a quick moment, a desperate fear overcame me, and I wondered if that was the last time I would see them and whether they would land safely. But the thought soon passed as I felt a strong pull on my pack and was moved into position by our instructor.
Actually, I’d wanted to chicken out (临阵退缩) once we reached the airport, but when I heard one of the teammates decided to skydive to celebrate her fiftieth wedding anniversary, I thought I had the courage to do it, too.
The wind blew louder as we went up further, each second feeling like an eternity (永生). My heart pounded in my chest quickly. Below me, the world seemed so distant, a patchwork of green fields and shining water. As I watched my children disappear into the vastness, a part of me wanted to scream, to pull them back into the safety of the aircraft. But another part, a deeper part, understood the excitement they sought and the freedom they had although they were afraid before skydiving.

But then I remembered my children, their courage inspiring me to take the leap[li p](跳跃). With a final glance at the instructor, I closed my eyes, spreading my arms and jumping out. W: We went to see a stand-up comedy. After that, we went shopping. Eric bought a tie, and I tried on some T-shirts and trousers, but I didn’t find anything I liked.
M: What did you do the next day
W: We spent a whole day going on a bike trip in the countryside.
Text 9
W: What do you usually do when you feel stressed
M: I usually jog five kilometers. I think jogging is an escape from the pressure of my life.
W: I tried doing yoga and reading comic books to reduce stress before, but they didn’t help much. Fortunately, I discovered a very effective way to reduce stress—sound healing.
M: Sound healing Can you be more specific
W: Simply speaking, it’s healing through sound. A sound therapist uses instruments to produce sounds from nature to relax people.
M: What kind of instruments are usually used
W: There are guitars, the Chinese guqin, gongs and handpans. Among them, I enjoy the Chinese guqin the most.
M: Where can you experience sound healing
W: I currently go to a sound therapy center. In addition, some yoga studios and tea rooms also offer sound healing. I first experienced sound healing during a yoga class.
Text 10
W: The Worcester Public Library announced that through the end of March, people who have lost or damaged a book or other borrowed items can bring a photograph, drawing or magazine clipping of a cat, and make their library cards work again without paying fines. The library called the program March Meowness, a way to forgive people who lost or damaged borrowed items by accident. Jason Homer, the executive director of the library, said in an interview on Monday that about 400 people had their library accounts unblocked and could borrow books again after bringing in their pictures or drawings of cats. In one case, a cat-less 7-year-old boy, who lost the book Captain Underpants, had his library card work again after the staff gave him paper and a pencil to draw a cat.
Like many public libraries in the United States, the Worcester Public Library is trying to encourage people to return there after the pandemic. The library had previously tried to raise the number of visitors with canned food drives. The library staff held meetings for several months to come up with different creative ways to get people back through the library doors. After these meetings, the Meowness program took shape. While the library had previously stopped charging fines for late returns, many people who faced fees for lost items simply stayed away. One woman named Julie, who had lost library DVDs by accident, regained access to her account with a photograph of a cat.

根据第一段中的“We seldom ate out, and the sight of the festive boats added a touch of magic.(我们很少外出就餐,节日船只的景象更增添了一丝魔力。)”以及第二段中的“Smiling and chatting, we stretched the dinner out to nearly two hours, ending it with shared chocolate cake.(我们边笑边聊,把晚餐延长到了将近两个小时,最后还一起分享了巧克力蛋糕。)”
根据第三段中的“Fighting back tears, I left my number with the hostess, sure the mix-up would soon be corrected.(我强忍着泪水,把电话号码留给了女服务员,确信这个误会很快就会解决。) 以及 “Heartsick, I hung the too big coat in the closet, still waiting.(我心里很难过,把那件太大的大衣挂在衣柜里,依然在等待。)”可知,作者发现拿错大衣时,强忍泪水(难过沮丧),但又留下电话等待解决(抱有希望),因此她的感受是沮丧但抱有希望,故选C。
26. 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“Did I need an attitude adjustment What if I was positive instead of negative about my unplanned acquisition (我需要调整心态吗?如果我对这件意外得到的东西持积极态度,而不是消极态度,会怎么样呢?)”以及最后一段中的“Instead of complaining, I asked myself what I needed to do with this coat in order to enjoy it. I had it altered by a woman from church free of charge.(我没有抱怨,而是问自己需要做些什么才能喜欢上这件大衣。我请教堂的一位女士免费修改了它。)” 可知,是作者内心的反思(调整心态、积极面对)促使她决定修改大衣,故选B。
27. 主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“HeartSick, I hung the too big coat in the closet, still waiting. (我心里很难过,把那件太大的大衣挂在衣柜里,依然在等待。)”,倒数第二段中的“Did I need an attitude adjustment What if I was positive instead of negative about my unplanned acquisition (我需要调整心态吗?如果我对这件意外得到的东西持积极态度,而不是消极态度,会怎么样呢?)”以及最后一段中的““Instead of complaining, I asked myself what I needed to do with this coat in order to enjoy it. I had it altered by a woman from church free of charge.(我没有抱怨,而是问自己需要做些什么才能喜欢上这件大衣。

根据第一段中的“These patches were long thought lifeless, with plastics and fishing tools harming marine life. But researchers found a full ecosystem in the largest one.(长期以来,这些垃圾带被认为是没有生命的,塑料和渔具会伤害海洋生物。但研究人员在
最大的垃圾带中发现了一个完整的生态系统)”可知,海洋垃圾带曾被认为没有生物生存。故选B项。
29. 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Beyond this, ocean sunfish, seabirds and turtles all rely on neuston as a major food source, linking the tiny organisms to broader marine life.(除此之外,翻车鱼、海鸟和海龟都依赖海洋漂浮生物作为主要食物来源,将这些微小生物与更广泛的海洋生物联系起来)”可知,海洋漂浮生物为大型海洋生物提供食物。故选B项。
根据第三段中的“plastics in the patch not only entangle marine life or block their digestive systems, but also carry harmful substances up the food chain to higher-level organisms(垃圾带中的塑料不仅会entangle海洋生物或堵塞它们的消化系统,还会将有害物质沿着食物链传递给更高层级的生物)”可知,塑料对海洋生物有危害,结合“block their digestive systems(堵塞消化系统)”可推测“entangle”应是具有负面影响的词,“Trap(困住)”符合语境,指塑料会困住海洋生物。故选A项。
根据第四段中的“Chong urges cooperative action to reduce plastic use: improving packaging design, promoting eco-friendly materials, and enhancing recycling systems — every improved link can cut down on waste flowing into the ocean. “It’s difficult and requires cooperation among businesses, governments, and individuals, but for the future of our oceans, we must try.”(Chong呼吁采取合作行动减少塑料使用:改进包装设计、推广环保材料、加强回收系统——每一个改进的环节都能减少流入海洋的垃圾。“这很困难,需要企业、政府和个人之间的合作,但为了我们海洋的未来,我们必须努力。”)”可知,Chong主要呼吁不同群体(企业、政府、个人)共同努力减少海洋垃圾。故选C项。

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了怀旧的定义、产生原因、影响以及我们应如何利用怀旧来增强社交关系和自我价值感。
32. 推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Often, nostalgia involves sensory stimuli. On some occasions, the smell of autumn leaves might generate a fierce longing for your childhood home.”(怀旧通常涉及感官刺激。
根据文章第三段的内容“In contrast to its links to negative emotions, nostalgia doesn’t make us sadder. Rather, nostalgia is a defensive response to unhappiness, one that brings relief from a negative mood. Research from 2006 shows that nostalgia can actually strengthen social ties, improve self-esteem(自尊), and uplift our mood. Other studies suggest that it can also improve our view of life’s meaning, reduce fear of death, and increase optimism.”(与它与负面情绪的联系相反,怀旧并不会让我们更悲伤。
根据文章第四段“To form stronger connections, we can establish traditions around shared past experiences in families, friend groups, and workplaces. Observing special occasions like childhood sports or post-college gatherings can give us something to look forward to.(为了形成更强的联系,我们可以在家庭、朋友圈和工作场所建立围绕共享过去经历的传统。)” 故选A。
根据全文内容以及第四段“Scholars remain uncertain about the accurate mechanism(机制) behind the effectiveness of nostalgia; however, some suggest that reflecting on joyful memories strengthens our sense of self-worth and belonging, particularly during times of loneliness or self-doubt. Its power lets the happiness of the past overcome the current unpleasantness, offering a bit of escape from tough times.(学者们仍然不确定怀旧效应背后的确切机制;然而,一些人认为,回忆快乐的记忆可以增强我们的自我价值感和归属感,尤其是在孤独或自我怀疑的时候。它的力量可以让过去的快乐克服当前的不愉快,为艰难时期提供一点逃避。)”可知,文章主要讲述了怀旧的定义、产生原因、影响以及我们应如何利用怀旧来增强社交关系和自我价值感,因此B选项“怀旧:我们生活中的避难所”最能概括全文内容。故选B。
