I admit it. I’ve never been great at coming up with gift ideas. I often worry that my choices might not be perfect, so I usually rely on lists or suggestions from my relatives. That’s why I was nervous when my editor asked me to write about using AI for holiday shopping. Would AI be better than me at finding gifts
I decided to try it. First, I searched for “gifts for my husband who loves disc golf, sales, and cooking.” The AI only suggested disc golf items, including a T-shirt my kid had already bought him. Next, I tried “gifts for cooking lovers”, but the results led me to endless gift guides, which became rabbit holes I fell down. Google’s “shop deals” page was too broad and took too much of my time.
I then tested ChatGPT. It gave me good suggestions but no direct links. When I asked for links, it explained it couldn’t go through the Internet in real time but offered general websites. The results were similar to my Google searches.
Overall, AI helped expand my gift ideas, but it wasn’t a magical solution. I still had to go through links and make decisions myself. While AI has great potential, this holiday season, most of my shopping was still done by clicking on links from relatives.
4. Why did the author feel nervous about using AI shopping
A. It is too time-consuming. B. She distrusts AI.
C. She is not good at gift ideas. D. Gifts are expensive.
5. What do the underlined words “rabbit holes” in paragraph 2 imply
A. The author received repeated suggestions. B. The author found perfect results.
C. The author managed to avoid extra searches. D. The author suffered from useless guides.
6. What did ChatGPT do when the author tried it
A. It gave her some gift ideas. B. It refused to offer websites.
C. It searched the Internet in real time. D. It provided magical solutions.
7. How does the author feel about AI as a personal shopping assistant
A. Greatly amazed. B. Cautiously optimistic. C. Hardly impressed. D. Completely doubtful.

Corktown Common Park is a beautiful urban oasis in Toronto’s West Don Lands district. It features a wildlife-filled marsh, sport fields, playgrounds, and plenty of space for picnics or barbecues. However, the park’s most impressive function is invisible: it’s designed to protect nearby neighborhoods from flooding. The landscape architects team worked with engineering firm Arup to create a park that looks natural but functions like a dyke (堤坝).
Twenty years ago, the West Don Lands area was mostly unused. It was once home to brick-making companies and taxi garages but had been abandoned for years. Emily Mueller, an associate principal of the firm, explains that Toronto struggled to develop the area due to its high flood risk, as it’s close to both a lake and a river.
In recent years, the district has seen significant development, with new office buildings and residential towers. Like many cities, Toronto is working to protect its neighborhoods from more frequent floods caused by climate change.
Corktown Common was built on a floodplain, so the team raised the land’s elevation (海拔) by nearly nine meters to create a natural barrier against rising water. Mueller explains that the goal was to combine the park with its facilities, making it feel like a welcoming green space rather than just a flood barrier. To achieve this, the firm added six meters of rolling hills and playgrounds on top of the infrastructure (基础设施).
The park is divided into wet and dry sides. Rainwater on the dry side is collected through underground pipes and stored in a large tank for irrigation. This system also reduces pressure on the Don River by slowing the flow of water into Lake Ontario.
8. What is the primary function of Corktown Common Park
A. To attract foreign tourists. B. To replace factories.
C. To protect local communities. D. To provide housing.
9. What caused the West Don Lands area to face high flood risk
A. Its wet climate. B. Its poor transportation.
C. Its industrial destruction. D. Its unfavorable location.
10. Why did the team add rolling hills and playgrounds on top of the barrier
A. To provide more space for sports and recreation.
B. To make the barrier look and feel like a friendly park.
C. To increase the height of the barrier against extreme floods.
D. To reduce the cost of maintaining the flood-control facilities.
11. Which is a benefit of the water system in the park
A. To boost wildlife. B. To help with irrigation. C. To clean lake water. D. To generate electricity.
D
You know immediately when someone is speaking to an infant or small child. Sentences become shorter, sounds are exaggerated, and the overall speech is more musical. A recent study found that female bottlenose dolphins change their tone when addressing their babies. Researchers recorded the whistle of 19 mother dolphins in Florida, when they were accompanied by their children and when they were swimming alone or with other adults.
The dolphin whistle is a unique and important signal. “They use these whistles to keep track of each other. They’re saying, ‘I’m here, I’m here,” said study co-author Laela Sayigh. They also found that the whistles of dolphin mothers had a greater range of frequencies when their children were nearby. They use baby talk. The high pitches (音调) were higher and the lows were lower.
Obtaining this data was not easy. Over more than three decades, scientists placed special microphones several times on the same wild dolphin mothers to record their whistles. This included years when they had babies and when they didn’t. On average, baby dolphins stay with their mothers for three years, and sometimes longer. “This is unprecedented, absolutely fantastic data,” said Mauricio Cantor, a marine biologist.
Why people, dolphins or other creatures use baby talk isn’t certain. Scientists believe it may help children learn to pronounce new sounds. Earlier research found that human infants may pay more attention to speech with a greater pitch range. Female rhesus monkeys may change their calls to attract their children’s attention. And Zebra finches slow down their songs to address baby birds, perhaps making it easier to learn bird songs.
For the dolphin study, the researchers focused only on the whistle call. They don’t know if dolphins also use baby talk for other conversations or whether it helps their children learn to “talk” as it seems to do with humans.
12. What is the purpose of dolphin whistles
A. To scare enemies. B. To attract mates.
C. To find enough food. D. To pay attention to others.
13. What do dolphin mothers do when they address their babies
A. They start singing. B. They swim faster.
C. They use baby talk. D. They jump out of water.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. Much effort was made to obtain the data.
B. Mauricio Cantor didn’t quite believe the data.
C. Scientists used special whistles to train dolphins.
D. Baby dolphins usually stay with their mothers for ten years.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. How dolphin parents teach babies. B. What conversations dolphins make.
C. The study’s limitations and unknowns. D. Methods for recording dolphin calls.

Amy walked into the noisy gym and pulled her kneepads (护膝) up over her knees. She was excited about volleyball camp, but also really nervous. She’d never been alone at a camp like this before! She hoped she would make friends soon.
She looked around at the girls talking excitedly to each other. “I wish I was more like Lucy,” she thought. Lucy was her sister. She could talk to anyone and become good friends.
But Amy was more ... quiet. At school, she usually liked to read her book instead of talking before class. She didn’t mind working by herself on school projects. And when it was her birthday, she invited just a few friends to go skating instead of having a big party.
The coach blew her whistle, and Amy jogged over to join the others for warm-up exercises. Amy felt a little awkward, but she tried to talk to a few of the girls.
After hours of serving, passing, and playing get-to-know-you games, it was finally time for lunch. Amy brought her food to a round table and sat next to some other players. Everyone was talking loudly and singing in funny voices. Amy bit quietly on her carrot sticks.
One of the older girls at the table noticed Amy being quiet. “Hey!” She put her hand on Amy’s shoulder and shook it playfully. “Be yourself! Just be crazy!”
Amy felt embarrassed. “But what if I am being myself ” she thought. “What if I don’t want to be crazy ” Maybe there was something wrong with her. Everyone seemed to like the girls who were loud.
At the end of the day, Amy was glad to see Mom’s car pull up. “How was it ” Mom asked.
“Fun,” Amy said as she climbed into her seat. And it had been fun ... sort of.
Amy sighed. Tomorrow would be another day of camp, surrounded by people she didn’t know. She would have to be brave all over again.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Mom seemed to read her mind and told Amy that she was proud of her.

I’m delighted to hear you’re interested in Chinese cuisine, and I’d like to recommend my favorite — Kung Pao Chicken. It’s a classic Sichuan dish with tender chicken cubes, peanuts, dried chili peppers and vegetables, cooked in a savory and slightly spicy sauce.
What makes it special is the perfect balance of flavors — salty, sweet, sour and spicy all in one bite. It’s not only delicious but also easy to find in most Chinese restaurants, so you can try it conveniently.
I’m sure you’ll fall in love with its rich taste and unique texture. Let me know how you like it if you get the chance to try!

47. Mom seemed to read her mind and told Amy that she was proud of her. “You don’t have to be like everyone else, Amy,” Mom said gently, patting her hand. “Just be yourself. Your quiet strength is a gift. Not everyone has to be loud to be noticed.” Amy nodded, feeling a little comforted. She realized that maybe being quiet wasn’t a bad thing after all. It was just who she was, and she didn’t need to change for anyone.
The next day, Amy was still her quiet self, but she felt more confident. During the volleyball drills, she focused on her skills and did her best. When the other girls chatted and laughed loudly, Amy smiled and listened, occasionally joining in with a quiet comment. To her surprise, some of the girls started to notice her and appreciate her calm presence. By the end of the day, Amy had made a few new friends who respected her for who she was. She learned that being true to herself was the best way to shine.
