When Dad returned to our small farm in a wheelchair after five months in hospital, I, then aged four, became the helper and the spirit builder. I accompanied Dad regularly for recovery. Dad progressed from wheelchair to a walker to crutches (拐杖). My role included watching patiently, ready to help when my dad’s determination wasn’t enough.
We missed some social events. Dad couldn’t come to school concerts, basketball games, and other events when my friends had a strong family presence. I didn’t have the chance to run in the park and be carried on shoulders when I was tired. But as an adult I realize what I gained by watching my dad heal his body, spirit and life with determination. I learned that it was up to us to decide whether we’d be ashamed or accept ourselves and others as complete. Mom still has a family portrait (全家福) I painted in second grade showing my father using two silver sticks as extensions (延伸) of his arms.
Most of all, caregivers learn to care. They see the need to open the door for the next person even for a few seconds. They learn to see the needs of others, even when it hurts. Caregivers understand that everyone needs to contribute and have a sense of community.
Recently, a participant in a program that I organized commented that I had comforting eyes. Without hesitation, I responded, “I grew up with a disabled father. Early in life, I would decide when it was time to be a child or a problem solver.” Although I may have missed enjoying a ride on my father’s shoulders, I had a chance to develop comforting eyes and everything that goes with that, always ready to help.
24. What role did the author play with his father in a wheelchair
A. Taking over household duties. B. Entertaining his father with stories and games.
C. Supporting his father’s recovery. D. Replacing his father at school events.

C. He missed many childhood experiences. D. He suffered from his father’s disability.
26. What is painted by the author in the family portrait
A. The author playing with his father. B. The family at a school concert.
C.The mother helping with the author . D. The father using crutches.
27. What can we know about caregivers according to the author
A. They depend on others. B. They focus on themselves.
C. They grow considerate and caring. D. They can beat mental loneliness.

The web is an information paradise (天堂) and a hell (地狱)at the same time. The platforms that control search were born in sin (罪恶). Their business model sells our most precious and limited cognitive (认知的) resource:attention. These platforms work overtime to attract our attention by feeding information that excites curiosity or causes anger. The more our eyeballs remain glued (盯着看) to the screen, the more ads they can show us, and the more profits they get .
It is hardly surprising, therefore, that all this could harm our collective attention. A recent analysis of social media content found that the rate at which the popularity of items rises and drops has accelerated. In a period of three years, for example, the popularity duration (持续时间) of a topic on social media decreased from an average of 17.5 hours to 11.9 hours. More competition leads to shorter collective attention intervals, which lead to ever-increasing competition for our attention.
To regain control, we need cognitive strategies (策 略) that help us regain at least some
independence and protect us from the traps (陷 阱 ) and information disorders of today's attention economy.
The textbook cognitive strategy is critical (批判性) thinking. But it is not enough. The digital world contains more information than the world's libraries combined. Much of it comes from unconfirmed sources and is of doubtful trustworthiness. Critically thinking through all the information and sources we come across would completely disable us. Moreover, applying critical thinking to sources that should have been ignored in the first place means that those seeking our attention have been gifted what they wanted.
So,we argue that as much as we need critical thinking, we also need critical ignoring. Critical ignoring is more than just not paying attention—it's about practicing mindful and healthy habits in the face of information overload. Without it, we will drown in a sea of information that is, at best, distracting and, at worst, misleading and harmful.
28.Why do the platforms keep us glued to the screen
A. To get more profits. B. To show us more information.
C. To excite strong feelings. D. To attract more advertisements.
29.What does the underlined word "accelerated" in paragraph 2 mean
A. Fallen down. B. Speeded up. C. Grown smaller D. Become longer.
30.Why is critical ignoring necessary in the digital world
A. Critical thinking is no longer applicable.
B. It helps us deal with information overload.
C. It can improve our critical thinking skills.
D. Trustworthy information is rare on the Internet.
31.What might the author talk about next
A. The strategies for critical ignoring. B. The harm of misleading information.
C. The ways to improve cognitive strategies. D. The need for control of online platforms
D
Some specialists doubt often using noise-cancelling headphones against background noise may hurt people’s hearing skills. Renee Almeida, an audiologist (听力师) at a healthcare trust, has seen a rise in adults who visit her clinic with various hearing issues but tests suggest their hearing is fine. The problem is with their brain, not their ears. They may fail to locate where a sound is from, or follow a conversation with full attention.
The condition, known as auditory processing disorder (APD), is often found in children, making them struggle to hear in classrooms or focus on a conversation. The rise in adults with similar issues struck Almeida as strange. She doubts that the widespread use of noise-cancelling headphones may cause ear infections (感染) and affect the process children learn to focus on sounds. For adults, it may make their brain lazy processing sounds, just as muscles weaken without exercise. There’s no scientific evidence that noise-cancelling headphones cause APD, but APD affects about 3%-5% of school-aged children.
According to Harvey, a professor at the University of Manchester, listening experience affects our ability to segregate background noise. Interrupting what is heard can be more problematic for children than adults. If a child has repeated ear infections before age five, they’ll find it hard later to focus on sounds from one direction. Surprisingly, many don’t catch up and need to learn the skill through training on apps such as Sound Storm.
Professor Dani at the University of Melbourne says people who use noise-cancelling headphones for long periods may find listening harder when they take them off. But she says the benefits should not be overlooked for managing sensory inputs. “Instead of suggesting abandoning noise-cancelling headphones, we need to stress the need for more comprehensive research studies,” she adds.
For now, Professor Dani recommends bone conduction (骨传导) headphones and hearing training. She urges patients to listen to radio debates and to take down the lyrics of rap songs. “There’s great bouncing ability in the brain. Make an effort to listen to what’s being said.”
32. What problem do headphones bring about to the wearers
A. Making their social life difficult.
B. Affecting their focus of attention.
C. Causing their total loss of hearing.
D. Leading to their lazy state of mind.
33. What does the underlined word “segregate” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Access. B. Create C. Strengthen. D. Separate.
34. Why does Professor Dani recommend listening to radio debates
A. It helps train the brain to better process and focus.
B. It’s for entertainment with no harm to hearing skills.
C. It’s beneficial for people with perfect hearing.
D. It’s effective for children under the age of five.
35. What is a suitable title for the text
A. APD Can Be Cured with Proper Exercise
B. Specialists Call Attention to APD Disease
C. Headphones Are Beneficial to Most Adults
D. Noise-Cancelling Headphones Cause a Condition

The first day Maya walked into our art club, I felt a connection right away. She had a calm way about her as Mr. Evans introduced her, “Everyone, this is Maya. She just moved here from Kyoto.” A soft welcome went around the room, but it was the detailed, hand-painted cherry blossom pattern on her sketchbook that really caught my eye as she sat down at the table across from me.
Over the next month, Maya and I became good friends. We spent a lot of time together—drawing in the quiet studio, eating lunch under the old oak tree, and simply enjoying being together without always talking. Her stories about old temples in Kyoto and the busy life she had left behind were so interesting. But what really stood out was how kind she was. She was always happy to give friendly advice on a painting or share her special Japanese erasers.
One thing about Maya, though, was her small, old-looking set of watercolor paints that she never seemed to use. One afternoon, while working on an important piece for a show, I realized I’d forgotten my blue paint. “Maya, could I borrow a little bit of your blue ” I asked, hoping she would say yes. Her smile disappeared, and she looked really sorry. “I... I’m so sorry, I can’t,” she said quietly, looking down at the box. I felt confused and then hurt, but I just nodded and quietly asked our teacher for some paint instead.
A week later, I found Maya in the storage room. She was crying quietly, holding the empty watercolor box. Worried, I went over and softly asked what was wrong. It turned out that the paint set was lost; she thought she must have left it by the sink(水槽). Then she explained it wasn’t just a set of paints; it was the last present from her grandmother in Kyoto, who had taught her all about art before she died. I felt ashamed as I remembered how upset I had been when she said no.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I decided to organize a search party and create lost-item notices.
