This winter, a 23-year-old college student’s story moved millions of Chinese people. Hong Zhanhui has raised an abandoned (被抛弃的) child for 11 years.
Hong was born in a small village in Henan Province. When he was 12, his father suddenly went crazy and killed his one-year-old sister. The family then adopted (收养) a baby girl called Chenchen.
Later, Hong’s mother ran away from home. She couldn’t stand Hong’s mad father’s beatings. Hong had to support the family and bring up Chenchen by himself.
In 1998, Hong entered Xihua No. 1 Senior High School, about 20 kilometers from his home.
Hong took Chenchen along with him. He put his time and energy into many things: working to get money, looking after his adopted sister, and sending medicine home for his father.
Hong sold pens, books and tapes to make money. “Many people looked down on me for that,” Hong recalled. “But I didn’t care.”
After he entered the college in 2003, Hong took on more part-time jobs, such as selling instant noodles. Earlier this year, Hong sent Chenchen to a primary school with money he got.
When Hong’s story became public, many people wanted to give him money. But Hong refused.
“Poverty and suffering should not be an excuse for begging sympathy (同情) and help from society,” said Hong. “I think it is most important for a man to support himself and be strong.”
Recently, Hong’s school started a fund (基金) named after him. The fund is to give money to help poor college students.

We all know that people can talk. What about plants A team found plants can also “talk”! Scientists heard their sounds.
The team recorded (录制) tomato plants at different times. It showed that the plants made ultrasound (超声波). The plants made little “clicks” and “pops”, but these sounds were too weak for humans. Scientists could only hear them with the help of a computer.
As the team studied the sounds, they started to find some interesting facts. Plants made different sounds at different times. They seldom made sounds when they had enough water. But when the soil got dry, they made more sounds. It’s like they are saying, “Water, please!” The team also found that plants made sounds when they got hurt. When the team cut a leaf from the plants, the plants also made sounds. But these sounds weren’t the same as when the plants needed water.
The team developed a computer AI system (系统). They used it to tell different kinds of sounds. It was able to find the difference between thirsty (口渴的) plants and plants with cuts. Maybe one day we can use these sounds to find out a plant’s problem. That can be helpful to farmers.
The team’s finding changes our ideas about plants. Even in a quiet field, plants are making sounds. They are telling us how they feel with sounds. We just need the right tool to listen. And those sounds carry information and may help us a lot. Isn’t nature amazing
29.How did the team find that plants can make sounds
30.What could help scientists hear the sounds of plants
31.When did plants make sounds (写出文中提到的两个方面)

Last week we went on a school trip to a science museum. Ms. Liu, the guide, showed us around a smart home.
We started with the front door. Ms. Liu asked me to ring the doorbell. I didn’t notice the tiny camera that was fixed just above it. After I pressed (按) the doorbell, the camera sent a live video (视频直播) to the home-owners. “They can electronically open the door when they are not at home,” said Ms. Liu.
The other thing I couldn’t see on the door was a lock. “There must be one,” I thought. At this time, Ms. Liu took out a smart phone and put it against the door. And it opened. “Oh, the key is on the smartphone.”
After entering the living room, I saw a computer on a table. By using the computer, the owners can control how much energy is used. In this way, they can manage their living cost. One of the rooms I wanted to see most was the bedroom. To my great surprise, the bed disappeared into the floor at the touch of the smart phone. The window has a smart blind (百叶窗). It can be raised and lowered with a voice.
As I left the smart home, I looked back on what I had just seen. Scientists often say that these products are improving our life. I think the technology in the smart home may make us lazier. However, there is no doubt that it will become more popular in the homes of tomorrow.

Li Ting, 15, from Shanghai, was preparing a talk on some western festivals. She went online for certain information and made a PPT. Wu Qiong, her classmate, was doing his chemistry homework carefully. But he couldn’t work out the last problem even if he tried his best. So he took out his mobile phone, opened a special app, and searched for the problem. Solutions soon appeared on the screen in several seconds.
Nowadays, many students do homework with the help of the Internet like Li and Wu. They search for information online, use apps or discuss through QQ and WeChat.
“It’s convenient. You don’t have to wait for your teacher to explain it to you face to face,” according to Wu. “You can also learn by seeing how others work them out. What’s more, it improves the students’ abilities. And it’s especially true for new kinds of homework. I am quite skilled at finding information online and using Microsoft Office.”
However, this also causes problems. Some lazy students just copy the answers online without thinking. Even some ask their classmates to do homework for them. And their teachers may not know the fact.
Anyhow, knowing how to use the Internet is important. The key is to have good self-control. When you meet a difficult problem, think about it by yourself first. Be sure to understand the reasons behind the answers after you have turned to the Internet, or you won’t make progress. If you are not sure about your self-control, ask your parents for help.

89.In what ways can we search for information online according to the writer
90.How can you learn if you don’t want to wait for your teachers to explain it

Some people spend too much time on the Internet every day. They feel a bit fuzzy (糊涂的) after watching short videos for a long time. They become forgetful and find it hard to focus (集中注意力). If you are one of these people, perhaps you’ve got something called “brain rot (脑腐)”. It’s the Oxford Word of the Year for 2024. According to Oxford, it’s a feeling that your brain is “rotting” because you’ve spent too much time on the Internet. Perhaps you feel you’ve lost an hour of your life watching short videos of people dancing or cats playing in the kitchen! Of course, nothing in your head is rotting, but it may almost feel like that.
The term “brain rot” isn’t new. It was first used in the 1850s in a book called Walden by Henry David Thoreau. He thought people liked some simple ideas and didn’t want to think about more complex (复杂的) things. Today, the term is once again popular. Many people are using it to show their worries over the bad side of the Internet.
While it can be fun to watch short videos sometimes, too much screen time can take you away from important things. And experts (专家) say it’s even bad for your health. So, remember to take breaks from the Internet and enjoy the real world. You can spend more time reading or talking with your family.
