Unique Chinese Cultural Heritage
Grand Canal
Grand Canal with a history of more than 2,500 years—the world’s longest man-made waterway, half of which is used even today—made it to the World Heritage List in 2014. It links several major rivers across the country, including the Yangtze River,Huaihe and the Yellow River, and runs through the cities of Beijing and Tianjin, besides the provinces of Hebei,Shandong,Henan,Anhui,Jiangsu and Zhejiang.
The Forbidden City
The birth of the Forbidden City,China’s imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties in Beijing,is closely linked to the Grand Canal. The waterway promoted transport of materials for construction of the palace complex and helped transport workers.
Peking Opera
Peking Opera is a great form of the Chinese art of entertainment. It was formed in Beijing under the Qing Dynasty by taking in characters of Huiju,Kunqu and Qinqiang operas. It gathers singing, acting, gymnastics and martial arts, and was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2010.
New Year Painting
Lunar New Year woodblock painting was a popular folk art in areas along the grand waterway. These paintings are bright and lively, and mainly use the colour red, which is considered to suit both festivals and happy events. Patterns are closely related to the life and livelihood of Chinese people.
Yunjin
Yunjin,or cloud brocade(锦缎),is a unique silk craft native to Nanjing in Jiangsu Province. It is famous for its splendid patterns and gentle feel, which make it more valuable than gold. In 2009,Nanjing brocade was listed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Whenever Song Jing visits a museum, she will check out the section on ancient books. Besides appreciating the wisdom hidden in these historical volumes, she also focuses on how they were bound(装帧) and presented. “It’s more like a force of habit caused by my job,” said Song.
This “book doctor” has been working in the restoration division for ancient books at the National Library of China in Beijing, since she finished her cultural relic protection studies course at Peking University in 2015. Up to now,she has been engaged in restoring more than 100 ancient cultural relics.
At the moment,Song and her colleagues are working on restoring a copy of Yongle Dadian,an encyclopedia created in 1408. Unfortunately, most of its books that have survived until today have suffered damage to their original binding. “To restore them to their original form,we need to gather information from various sources, such as images and texts, before we can make sure their original binding style and repair them accordingly,” she explained. Moreover, the ancient encyclopedia’s silk texture and colour have both grown inconsistent, which makes creating the necessary raw materials and matching the colour difficult.
In the past, restorers had to rely on their experience to determine the appropriate materials to use for a project. As technology has evolved, they are able to use a new method to finish the task through microscopes. However, technology can only help so much,as ancient books restoration still requires essential manual skills, including cutting and brushing paper and binding. Apart from this, the restoration also requires strong control when brushing the paper. “If the pressure is not properly controlled during the brushing process, the paper may tear, but if the touch is too light, the paper won’t adhere (黏附),” Song explained.
Owing to the meaningful and complex process, the ancient books’ restoration technique of the national library was listed as the national-level intangible cultural heritage in 2008. “Hopefully,I can be of some help in inspiring more young people to find their lifelong passion in the field of cultural heritage preservation,” said Song.

高效作业 8 [必修第二册 Unit 2 Wildlife Protection]
Ⅰ.阅读理解
In the scenic coastal city of Cornwall,Lizzi Larbalestier has become a beacon of hope for marine wildlife. As a committed volunteer for British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR),her journey began with transforming her Airbnb,an online platform that allows people to rent out their homes or accommodations to travellers, into a temporary haven for injured seals. This effort came as the result of the increasing incidents of marine animals suffering from human-related injuries and the lack of specialised care facilities in the region.
Recognising the urgent need for a more permanent solution,Lizzi, alongside her husband and a team of committed volunteers, established a fully equipped seal hospital. This facility, now in its third year of operation, has expanded its capacity to ten pens and is prepared to recover around 100 seals annually. The hospital caters to a variety of cases: seals injured by boats or caught in fishing gear(设备),young pups separated from their mothers, and young seals weakened by poor nutrition. Each animal receives personalised care, ranging from basic first aid to extensive recovery programmes. After initial treatment, seals are often moved to larger recovery centres for further care before their release back into the wild.
Lizzi’s commitment to marine conservation extends beyond seal rescue. She is an active participant in environmental campaigns like Surfers Against Sewage and Ghostnetbusters. Her tireless efforts were recognised when she received the Animal Action Award from the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Lizzi owes the success of BDMLR’s operations to the collective effort of all volunteers, emphasising the importance of teamwork in achieving their conservation goals.
The BDMLR team also responds to emergencies involving other marine wildlife, like whales and dolphins. Lizzi recalls several successful operations, including the rescue of stranded(搁浅的) dolphins and a turtle that required specialised care.

When consuming information,we try to acquire more signals and less noise. We feel like the more information we consume, the more signals we receive. While this is probably true on an absolute basis,Nassim Taleb argues in the book Antifragile that it is not true on a relative basis. As you consume more data and the ratio(比率) of noise to signals increases, you know less about what’s going on and you are likely to cause more unintentional trouble.
The supply of information to which we are exposed under modernity is transforming humans from a calm person to a neurotic(神经质的) one. For the purpose of our discussion, the first person only reacts to real information, and the second largely to noise. The difference between the two will show us the difference between noise and signals. Noise is what you are supposed to ignore; signals are what you need to heed.
In science, noise is a generalisation beyond the actual sound to describe random information that is totally useless for any purpose, and that you need to clean up to make sense of what you are listening to. You can use and take advantage of noise and randomness, but noise and randomness can also use and take advantage of you, particularly with the data you get on the Internet or through other media. The more frequently you look at data, the more noise you are likely to get,and the higher the noise-to-signal ratio is.
Say you look at information on a yearly basis—the changes you see will all be large ones. The ratio of signals to noise is about one to one—this means that about half the changes are real improvement or degradation, and the other half come from randomness. But if you look at the very same data on a daily basis, the composition would change to 95 percent noise and 5 percent signals, and the changes you see daily will certainly be small.
( )4.What opinion does Nassim Taleb probably hold
A.It’s hard to know the real truth.
B.The noise-to-signal ratio is changing.
C.The information explosion can be harmful.
D.More information brings more signals.
( )5.What does the underlined word “heed” probably mean in Paragraph 2
A.Notice. B.Analyse.
C.Solve. D.Describe.
( )6.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A.Causes and harm of more noise.
B.The meaning and impact of noise.
C.The relationship between noise and signals.
D.Advantages and disadvantages of noise.

高效作业 10 [必修第二册 Unit 4 History and Traditions]
Ⅰ.阅读理解
In spring, chickens start laying again, bringing a welcome source of protein at winter’s end. So it’s no surprise that cultures around the world celebrate spring by honouring the egg.
Some traditions are simple, like the red eggs that get baked into Greek Easter bread. Others promote the egg into a fancy art, like the heavily jewel-covered “eggs” that were favoured by the Russians starting in the 19th century.
One ancient form of egg art comes to us from Ukraine. For centuries,Ukrainians have been drawing complicated patterns on eggs. Contemporary artists have followed this tradition to create eggs that speak to the anxieties of our age: Life is precious, and delicate. Eggs are, too.
“There’s something about their delicate nature that appeals to me,” says New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast. Several years ago,she became interested in eggs and learned the traditional Ukrainian technique to draw her very modern characters. “I’ve broken eggs at every stage of the process—from the very beginning to the very, very end.”
But there’s an appeal in that weakness. “There’s part of this sickening horror of knowing you’re walking on the edge with this, that I kind of like, knowing that it could all fall apart at any second.” Chast’s designs, such as a worried man alone in a tiny rowboat, reflect that delicateness.
Traditional Ukrainian decorated eggs also spoke to those fears. The complex patterns were believed to offer protection against evil.
“There’s an ancient legend that as long as these eggs are made, evil will not take over in the world,” says Joan Brander,a Canadian egg-painter who has been painting eggs for over 60 years, having learned the art from her Ukrainian relatives.
Although the tradition dates back to 300 BCE,the old symbols on the eggs still reflect their good wishes. A decorated egg with a bird on it,given to a young married couple,is a wish for children. A decorated egg thrown into the field would be a wish for a good harvest.

Hip hop started about 50 years ago as an escape from poverty and violence in Bronx,New York City. The music and style appealed to Black and Latino teenagers. As hip hop spread throughout New York,so did the culture.
People often mix up hip hop with rap. Rap is a musical style that combines quick recitation of rhymes with musical beats. But hip hop is more than just music. It is a culture, and rap music is one part of it. Hip hop also includes other activities, like breakdancing,disc-jockeying and graffiti art. In his 1993 song “Hip Hop vs. Rap”,KRS-One said,“Rap is something you do. Hip hop is something you live.” In the early days of hip hop, playing music on the streets or turning a basketball court into a dance floor may have seemed like a simple invitation to have fun and party. But it actually was an answer to social and economic injustice in poor neighbourhoods. It was a way to show joy and imagination even without resources and wealth.
As hip hop and rap music grew into a force in American culture, entertainers used it to speak to their personal realities. In 1982,in the song “The Message”,Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five criticised poverty and a lack of investment in Black communities. Several years later,Tupac Shakur complained about police violence in the song “Changes”. Today, hip hop’s influence on music and other industries is so widespread that experts say it becomes difficult to measure.
There is also hip hop’s influence on protest, resistance and political dissent(异议) around the world. From the Arab Spring and the Palestinian freedom fight to feminism and class struggles, rap music is a popular expression for calls to action. Music videos produced by artists in Africa,Europe,Asia and South America often include breakdancing, graffiti and other elements of hip hop.
“Hip hop took the chains off us and said,‘No,we’re gonna say it our way,’” Al Sharpton,American civil rights leader, said. “It was that freedom. It was that raw,non-watered down kind of expression.”
( )4.What is Paragraph 1 mainly about as for hip hop

( )6.What was the early hip hop
A.A competition in dance and music.
B.A call for peaceful global relations.
C.A response to poverty and violence.
D.A trend of musical experimentation.
( )7.What made hip hop powerful in Sharpton’s view
